I just removed the airbox. At first, just idling in my driveway, I didn't really notice a difference. But as I pulled the trigger to get on the freeway, WOW. Noticeable increase in acceleration, and it actually sounded like the badass it is. I've heard others say they lost some gas mileage with the airbox removal. After 25 miles, the cluster reads about the same as always (41 mpg). We'll see after a full tank. Others have speculated their observed decrease may have been due to the temptation to growl it up more, and I have to admit I succumbed to that temptation myself. One question: When I popped off the box, I saw a fair amount of debris inside --- mostly dirt and even some fine particles of leaves and such --- a little of which was actually in the filter (I cleaned it out of course). Anyone else notice this, and does the removal of the box represent a risk to increase debris to the extent that it might reduce the life of the filter --- or get past the filter? Obviously the airbox didn't do that great a job as a barrier in the first place, because it was ON when all that crap got inside, but I wonder what I can expect the next time I crack it open . . . | ||

All that stuff got in there when it came in through the ram-air opening under the fairing. Removing the airbox top shouldn't increase or reduce the amount of stuff in there. | ||

Ya mine ran tons better with reflash and stock airbox lid off. I had a remus and i hated it. | ||

I don't, but I might consider selling mine if I still like it the way it is in a couple weeks. | ||

I ended up putting mine back on. The sound is cool for ripping around town but it was too much when hitting 100 miles of corners with my head close to the air box. I have done several thousand miles both ways and I cant tell a difference especially ripping through turns with the the RPM's up in its power range. Maybe from stop light to stop light there is a difference. | ||

i agree with Xbswede i ran mine off for about 400 miles and had it back on for 500 and some change now and i like it both ways...maybe when i run the 1/8th or 1/4 mile strip i might take it back off.. | ||

This thread reminds of being a kid and flipping my dad's air cleaner cover over to make it sound cool. Of course, we had to put it back before we took the car home. | ||

Always done that on my dads monte carlo every time we had it out..... always had to stop about a mile out and flip it back at the local car wash and also spray the inner fender wells off from all the rubber build up... | ||

OK. The airbox has been off for a little more than a week now --- about 400 miles. After the first tank (mostly around town) the cluster read 38 mpg and the odometer/gaspump method revealed that the true average was only a little better than 35 mpg. This is a little low for me, but probably within normal limits considering it was largely city riding. After the second tank, the cluster claimed 41 mpg, and the observed value was in fact 41.2 --- within 1 mpg of my best-ever observed economy. This tank was almost exclusively highway mileage, but a large percentage of that was at 85 mph and up.  At this point, I am prepared to believe that removal of the airbox does not appreciably decrease fuel economy, and may in fact improve it. I will repost if my own data causes me to change my opinion. |
