I searched the KV, and found a million posts about the need to upgrade the kickstand on early XB's. OK. Now I got an excellent new model kickstand, the one with the circle clip, but I still have a couple of questions. Do you need to remove the muffler to replace the entire kickstand assembly? How long are the bolts that hold the kickstand mounting plate attached to the motor, and what size are they? Anyone know? Thanks! |

You have to at least drop the muffler a bit to get the bolts out. If memory serves me right (wich it does less and less of anymore) You will need a 7/16 open end wrench to try to do it with the muffler on and up that would make it a 1/4" bolt. I think that a 5/16" bolt would be more suited to kickstand mounts so maybe it is a 1/2" wrench you need. Now that I've been a complete tool and haven't helped at all I'm gonna go eff things up on the BB&D board. |

The stock bolts are a little shorter than 1 1/2" but they include the washer. If you are going to the hardware store for the bolts; here's what I did before the recall was announced. Parts: (2)Bolts, 5/16x18, 1.5" Allen Head Black alloy steel or Grade 8 (4)Washer flat, grade 8 (2)Washer lock, grade 8 Assemble two sets of bolts with 1 lock washer followed by two flat washers. Place a drop of clean engine oil on the bolt threads and the washer stack. Assemble and torque to 27lbs/ft. |

Personally, I'd be downgrading the kickstand if I had the new one. The new one, with the spring return to the middle, you gotta either push the stand forward or rock the bike backwards to settle into it. Yes, this is safer for the rider - it puts the kickstand into a retractable position if you ride off with it down. But, it also makes the bike prone to tipovers when some @sshat comes up and sits on your bike and does not know how the kickstand works! |

I keep @sshats off my bike. Kinda solves the problem. If one sits on it uninvited and knocks it over, then not only will I be replacing the broken parts but also my helmet; WHICH I WILL USE TO BEAT HIM TO DEATH WITH!!!
