Violent crime is way down in my city and non-violent crime is slightly down. But with the P.D. facing cuts and the economy getting worse I'm sure it will change. I also believe that "alarm company" signs make you a bigger target. Why? Kinda forgot about it but I have one outside that says beverly hills security that I stole when I was a kid. I know but it seemed funny at the time. |

Why do I believe the "alarm company" signs make you a bigger target? You are advertising. Advertising that this place has something you want. Same as putting the trash out on the curb after Christmas. Its the "Hey look at me!" statement. Put an alarm system in. Use it! Just no need to advertise the fact you have one. |

If you are serious about protecting your home you really need two items. A random light timer, and a basic radio. When you leave the house plug in the timer, and flip on the radio. With the radio sound (especially talk radio) no one will enter your house. |

Where I live there are always kids going through yards as it is very populated and not very devolped in that we have no sidewlks and the blocks are sometimes very long. Most of them are neighborhood kids and good but you never know so ya gotta always check I have my yard well lit. As far as ripping out a shotgun probably not a good idea but it would get your point across or get you shot or locked up luckily we have a fairly good police force who do a fair job on stuff like that on drugs thats another matter and GETTING WORSE |

Real barking dogs are a good deterrent. If a dog is barking, there's a good chance that someone is likely to see what's going on. They don't have to be big, just persistent. We have two big dogs in the house. With Ralph (the hearing dog!), we know when someone is at the door, on the driveway or in the yard, someone is leaving or there is thunder in the distance. Other than that, he's pretty quiet. |

How many of you all have the automatic garage door openers? If you do, take the release rope off. Anybody can pull the rope with a coat hanger or something similar and release your garage door then they're in. K |

I've got my patended 3 alarm system - 1 toy poodle, 1 chinese crested and a howling Beagle, all keep the house safe, althought the poodle would be the only real "guard" dog, the other 2 are cowards. Having redneck neighbors doesn't hurt either! |

A half pound of cheap lunchmeat will keep that poodle busy long enough for a burglar to get inside. Put a sedative in that lunchmeat and he's got the house to himself. |

I use 6 wireless cameras and a re-mote monitoring program so i can see what's up from work. Also the recorder is hidden in the wall where it can not be taken or seen! |

I agree... Our chihuahua lets us know if anyone is closer to the house than the sidewalk. |

I use 6 wireless cameras For the love of sanity please tell me you are using an IP based camera system (like wifi), not just basic 1.2,2.4, 5.8Ghz cameras. If you are not using an IP based system, you are really setting yourself up for trouble. Anyone can easily view most wireless "Security" cameras, this includes almost all video baby monitors. One of my side projects is designing these systems so let me know if you have any questions. |

My German Shepherd sleeps inside the house and she is a good watch dog with a loud bark and big teeth and a nasty attitude. We have never been burgled but the people next door have. |
