Recently having erratic oil level checks on my 08 X. If I check it within 1 minute of warm shut down I get a register on the dipstick. (try to keep it at about the 2nd x from the bottom, any higher and I get oil in the airbox) Recent checks have highly variable results. When cold checked it barely shows any oil (about 1/10 of an inch) Anyone checked theirs in cold condition ?? Whats normal? I dunno - Can ya even say that with a Uly ??

You cannot check the oil when cold, it will not give an accurate reading. There is also an issue with the 08s being difficult to check due to an issue with the new oiling system.

Thanks for the links Froggy. You are one helpful Buell guy. The manual suggests doing a cold check for 'presence' of oil but not for proper level. Wonder why, if it doesn't even register on the dipstick ?? Didn't have this issue untill recently, after 7000 mi - wondering what changed. Looking into reroute of splooge line as per American Sport Bike kit. Thanks again! j

06' ULY rules. About 17000 miles on mine and around 3000 miles since last oil change which was just before 08' homecoming. Never have to add a drop. Mobil 1 15W50 automotive syn. I check when my oil temp-dipstick reads 180F or above.

I think your right about the 15-40 syn Electra, that 20-50 seems too thick for up here in the northland, plus I don't think we need all those clutch additives in our engine.

I just have no idea where the oil is hiding. I'm not burning any, not leaking, a bit in the airbox - but no more than an oz. I use AMSoil 20-50. Used the 10-40 version in my ST1300 for years, 30K miles and no adds between changes. We generally have moderate temps in PugetSound region - but can understand why 10-40 might be a better choice in winter above the 45th parallel. This winter... maybe 0-20 ? Anyway - leaving on 4K mi roundtrip next week - report when I get back. Thanks all. j
