Alright so i'm currently running SYN3 and want to switch to Royal Purple Max Cycle 20w50.. The manual cautions against switching oils indiscriminately stating: "Do not switch lubricant brands indiscriminately because some lubricants interact chemically when mixed. Use of inferior lubricants can damage the engine. (00184a)" Does anyone have any advice/sugestion on the best way to go about this switch?? Is it safe just to drain the SYN3 and just add the Royal Purple or do i need to flush the whole system?? and help would be appreciated, thanks. } |

I would change with no hesitation if it was my bike. You can drain almost everything out of this motor (if you change the filter also) so you should be fine. Just my .02 cents |

Don't forget to remove the exhaust can and take off the "oil pan" to help get the most old oil out. And unless you can turn the entire bike upside down, there is a lot of oil that remains on top of the cylinder head/bolt areas...so if you are really anal...do another change soon to rid cross/contamination possibilities. |

Draining this bike is a 2 person job! First, I remove the bolt on the left side and drain out as much as possible. Then, my GF tilts the bike to the right and I remove the drain plug on the right. Once this is finished, put the bike back on the ss and drain the left plug again. I'll back and forth doing the 2 or 3 times until almost nothing comes out. Then, remove the filter and let that drain (good for the ss bushing!). Peplace the filter, torque down the bolts. Doing this allows me to use exactly 3 qts to hit the mid mark on my brother, errr, the dipstick. btw, I use Mobil-1 for twins. |

+1 on changing the filter EVERY oil change. I couldn't imagine changing it every other oil change like the manual suggests, No way. |

I probably need to look harder when I'm there. When is the earliest you recommend changing over to synthetic? I have 170 miles on it and was planning on changing it once before the 600 mile service. |

Thats what I was considering since I've read varying opinions on using synthetic on a new motor. I believe I read somewhere that syn 3 was acceptable to use as a break in oil as the screaming eagle Harley's come factory with it. |

There is no issue going to RP. IMHO I would wait until 2,500-3,500 miles. Oh yeah, ALWAYS change the filter. Heck by 600 miles I had changed my oil at least 3 times. I expect a lot out my engine in it's "youth" so, I'm real nice to it by changing the oil frequently early on. Neil S. |

Gearhead, O'Reilley's also carries Mobil-1 but it might be in the back. I have to ask them bring it to me, so if you don't see it ask. |

I must have missed something a year ago...I thought this bike came with HD/SYN from the Dealership Prep, prior to any of us riding?! The only issue was actual oil level on the dipstick and how to check it! LOL! Switching to another SYN should not be all the concern? |

MM, as I recall it was an Anony that confirmed HD 20w-50 dino was in them from the factory. |
