Sorry if this post shows up in two places. I posted it as a response to an archived thread expecting it to show up on the list of recent posts which it did not. Seanp - thanks for the photos and the mounting idea. I finally got around to mounting mine today using your idea with a few mods. I used a piece of aluminum flat stock to span the mounting holes in the front of the tube. I also made some rubber washers and put those between the tube and the mounting bar. I wasn't satisfied with the sag in the tube once I loaded it with my tools. So, I took it off for the ump-teenth time and drilled a couple more holes in it and used a zip tie to sinch it up. It's a solid fit now and provides the clearance I was looking for by the saddle bag latch. Also, I munched out a bunch of the plastic around the rear mounting hole as it was interfering with the saddle bag mount. I have the Buell toolkit and am able to stuff it in the tube by removing the large wrenches (which I now stow under my seat). Great farkle. Thanks to all for the ideas.

Will it work on the other side too? |

Looks good Troy. Two questions: the tube, what is it and where did you get it? Second question is a slight hijack, How do you like the Roadsmarts? |

Is that a welding rod tube? Looks like the perfect place to stash stuff. |

A spare belt might fit in one of those. |

Here is the thread: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/402125.html Tipsy provided the link for the tube. It's actually a owners manual holder for a tractor or some other piece of heavy equipment. I just checked the link and it doesn't seem to direct you to the tube. This link works: http://www.agrisupply.com/product.asp?pn=67670 Jon - I assume you are referring to the tires? If so, they are Michelin Pilot Road 2. I am satisfied with them so far, but I won't know until I wear through them. They are dual compound and I bought them primarily for the mileage wear you are supposed to achieve. We'll see. Dan - I didn't try to mount it on the other side. I just took a look and I don't see any difference in the saddle bag mount or any obstructions that might interfere with it. And yes, a spare belt might fit, but I don't have one to check. |

does it clear the rear wheel and fender with the suspension compressed? |

That's way nicer than my install! Good job - I may reverse engineer your reverse engineering and shore mine up a bit. I attached a couple to the side number plates on my KLX too, just for a little bit of waterproof storage. |

The clearance is tight, but you would really have to bottom out the suspension for any contact and even then it would only be with the fender. The mounting is flexible enough so if there was contact, it would simply be pushed outward. Here's a few more photos from the back and underside:

No problem. I merely plagiarized the ingenuity of others I have already credited. I should be so lucky to possess the skill and creativity of the best and brightest on these thread. At any rate, it's the least I can do to pay it forward for all I have gleaned from so many members on this forum. |

I have to say that this forum is really entertaining and interesting. The Ideas are great. The people are really nice and very helpful to each other. Thanks to all, and keep it up! |

Cool deal . . . I just ordered a couple of them. I want to try both sides . . perhaps tools in one and the other for . . . . uh . . . I'll figure that out. How about a 1L spare fuel bottle? Maybe not . . . |

This is flat brilliant. There's one thing I dread is losing luggage (for clothes, stuff) space to tools, especially on long trips. I'd rather a dedicated place to keep most of the tools, and keep them away from my - or my girl's - delicates. |

Is that Irish or Canadian "Fuel" |

I was wondering if you could get an atlas or gazetteer map in there? |

I would put either Kentucky or Scottish "fuel" in there. But I'd be sure to stop somewhere where a bit of ice could be found... |

Just another option for mounting and fuel. The 33 oz MSR bottle fits perfect and a 100MPH tape as a bumper to make it all snug. The direction I have the tubes mounted I had to modify the cap a bit. This has worked for a few 100 miles even off road.

Now that's a sweet idea - the MSR bottle, I mean. I was thinking of one of the Touratech plastic oil canisters that fit on the outside of the Zega cases, but I like this even better. |

fyi on the clamps - they are 5/8" and can be found in the electrical section at Home Depot. |

Any comments on how tough those tubes are? Will they withstand a bash if mounted, say on the outside rear of an aluminum pannier? |

I went a different way with the install. If I had two I would mount them on the bag rails however I just wanted one so I used the bolt holes from the turn signal relocation and fashioned a aluminum bracket and used hose claps. This is just a mockup I will cut the tube mounting brackets off and add rubber where the tube contacts the aluminum bracket in order to be able to unscrew the cap.
Once I cut the tube brackets off it will be more centered. I was worried about the bag latch but it is no problem and I decided if it was I could always take the tool tube cap off then take off or put on the bags, Frank |

Skinner, Thats a great place for maybe a third tube for myself?!?!?!? THANKS!! |

The finished install.
I glued rubber feet from a radio in two places on the tube between the tube and the aluminum bracket. This allows me to open the tube since the cap is larger than the tube itself. Be careful not to tighten the hose clamps to much or the tube will bend and deform to the point you will not be able to get the cap off or on. Don't ask! |
