Seems like the original battery is starting to have difficulty turning over the lump. Any ideas or suggestions for a replacement? I have an 06 so it is pumping out lots of juice versus the newer version with the toned down stator, so I think I would prefer a sealed model. Battery is 2 years old and 16,000 miles and battery tender for extended down time. | ||

I got a Speedcell Superbike battery. 2lbs, LiPo, it handles cranking in cold temps better than the stock Pb battery.  Also first verify that everything is good with your Stator and VR, you could have bigger issues than you realize! | ||

+1.. just noticed the comment about the VR and Stator... I replaced both back in August. Before that I had noticed it didn't start quite a good at it used.. was thinking maybe battery.. but it was not bad enough to worry to much (or so I thought) Went for a ride to Ashville and back.. on the way back about 40 miles from home the FB voltage monitor keep turning red... I had to keep it up over 3500 rpm to keep in the the green range. I make a beeline for home and made it... Officially I had a shorted stator. Now with new stator/vr/battery.. all is well again. | ||

Froggy, how the heck do you hook a LiPo to your stock VR and not... um... explode it? I'll have to do some digging... As for non HD batteries, I had a walmart battery crack and leak in my KLR-250. Not a big deal on the KLR, but it would have been beyond bad if it happened in my XB. The HD battery is a reasonable price for a very high quality battery... and the XB platform demands a high quality battery. If that LiPo pack has a built in charger, then that would be outstanding as well... provided the charger is smart enough to not blow something up if a cell starts to fail. | ||

Some RC airplane guys use Lithium Ion batteries which have a similar makeup as LiPos and have burned up many expensive airplanes. You have to be VERY careful with these while charging. Problem is, its charging while the bike is running. And if one cell gets a crack, forget about it. I would do my homework before I would put one in my bike. I guess the good thing is that you free up some valuable storage space under the seat. |
