Jim: If you look at the latest Cycle World you will see that Terblanche took design ideas from train engines and a prop driven train circa 1930 for the 999's design. The RW body work to a small degree and the RR to a much greater degree owe a lot to wind tunnel work Harley-Davidson did for a streamliner XR that I believe Cal Rayborn rode to several records. Look at an XR750 roadracer. Erik had access to all the data that was generated from those test. Not all of it was used on XR road racer. To this day very few people really understand WHY the RR is so slippery. Dave | ||

Charlotte, Glad you tuned in here -- you won't miss events like that again. Being in Buell's backyard, you're privy to a lot of cool happenings (Elves Invasion, etc..). Yeah great show! The feature on Erik and the XB9R was pretty cool, but the part about the Britten was STUNNING! Also neat stuff about that turbine powered Y2K bike, the Segway and the history of Indian, HD and the Japanese Invasion. Great "snowed in" TV! | ||

In a world intent on accentuating the highly technical, he and Erik used to laugh together at how they both were taken with keeping their eyes on the SIMPLE things and doing them right and in the right combinations. Both, in my mind, had a gift in terms of being able to look at a complex collection of pieces and see the solution in it's most functional and sensible form. The fischer motor co. is NOT putting America on the "sportbike map" with that proposed design. Besides not having alot of distinctive design (looks like a 999 to me), the engine is NOT an american motor. That bike, in MY opinion, only represents another semi-custom bike built around someone else's technology. Whether or not I think the XB9 has enough power, it does use some interesting technology to squeeze capability out of a pushrod engine. And, there is no question that Buell has pushed the envelope of chassis design much farther than the Japanese or the Italians have (on a production bike anyway). From the here & now, the XB9 represents more "american engineering ingenuity" than that bike. It doesn't seem to me anything other than an assemblage of someone else's parts & ideas. Hey, its my opinion. I wait paitiently for an XB7R with 100 hp (at the tire, not the piston rings) and (gasp) overhead cams...... | ||

I only caught the last 30 minutes of the show. At least I got to see the entire segments on The Guggenheim, Britten & Buell  I also liked the way the segwayed from motorcycles as art to Britten and his design philosophy to Erik Buell. My only wish is that they had included the XB9S. From a "visual" standpoint, it is a much more stunning design than the Firebolt. Does anyone know when the show will repeat? I'd like to catch the whole thing. | ||

What a great piece of positioning and promotion for Buell in that TV show. Right after the Britten! I had to go out to the garage and sit on the Firebolt for a few min basking in the glow. Congrats to the mothership. Hope the folks in East Troy raised a glass last night! | ||

Went over to the Britten site this morning to get another look at the VR1000. What an awesome machine!!!!!! I found this interesting tib-bit while reading the specs page....The VR1000 radiator was mounted under the seat. Now why couldn't/wouldn't H-D/Buell use that idea? I couldn't find any good pics of the smaller details (like exactly where the radiator was located). Off to do more research | ||

Found a pic of the radiator... It looks like it was flat mounted directly under the seat. Not sure how I'd feel about riding 200+ miles with that thing roasting my nuts  | ||

Court's post reminded me of something... Earlier this year I went to the Art of the Motorcycle dealie at the Guggenheim in Las Vegas. Unfortunately I was with someone who, despite claiming to be a fan of motorcycles, had NO intention of actually immersing himself in what was offered there. I was rushed through and left longing for a proper visit. Well, last month I returned with Loli. Not being rushed, we were both TOTALLY taken aback. The most interesting thing to me is the number of different ideas that were tried when no real definition of "Motorcycle" seemed to exist. LOTS of innovation. Maybe something to think about... We spent a good deal of time there. It was fantastic. I hope to go again before the exhibit closes. PLEASE do yourselves a favor and visit this exhibit. Go when you have lots of time to kill. Take it all in 'cause I think it's going away in Spring... -Saro | ||

The interesting thing about the Fisher bike besides using Gemini Technology Systems is that Glynn Kerr heads up the design team and uses a frame similar to the Firebolt's, sans gas tank. I for one am interested in what he did to it to improve on its cosmetics which he said were underwhelming in a different article. There are a number of other interesting bits of info in the article, such as the use of the KTM/Rotax engine that many of you suggested Buell do in past posts. As well as competing with the Duc's, Aprilias and Hondas, etc. The article is a good read. I wish Fisher well and will be interested to see what, if anything, Buell will do to up the ante. | ||

Correction on the engine...is Aprilia/Rotax. However, it doesn't make much difference to me as I am holding out for the V-Rod powered SuperTracker and StreetFighter. | ||

Lake_Bueller, The "fuel tank" has ductwork to flow air through the radiator and down into the area in front of the rear wheel. The idea being to remove the traditional low pressure area there and reduce drag. PPiA | ||

The Rotax has been around for a long time and has always been a power house.Ski-doo use's Rotax and have been around a long time.Also Sea- doo.I don't think the Rotax motor they will be using will be any thing like Aprilia they will have there own design. | ||
