Went for a very short ride and a very long walk on Sunday. I had a few parts powder coated (seat rails and bars...), installed a Jardine pipe and a race ECM this winter. Sunday was nice so I went out and the bike stopped running a 1/4 mile from home. Had to push it home. Now - when I turn the ignition on the check engine light does not come on at all and the fuel pump does not run, the needles do sweep though. I put a new, fully charged battery in tonight and pulled out the race ECM and put the stocker back in. Still nothing. I have gone thru and check my grounds and followed the service manual trouble shooting and it says my ECM needs to be replaced. WTF? Why would 2 ECM goes bad in 2 days? Is there a way to check the ECM's? Am I missing something? (Message edited by EVLXB on February 09, 2009) |

No check engine light, no fuel pump, no start. Possibly a problem with the kill switch? |

If it was a Jeep I'd say crank position sensor, but it is not a jeep. |

Is the neutral light coming on? Also check your relays in your fuse box. Make sure you didn't powdercoat over your ground cable mounting points. |

No neutral light - or oil - I do get a highbeam light. Scraped the PC off the grounding lugs. Is there a way to check the relays? |

Have you verified that the fuses for the ECM are good? and by that I mean actually test them with a meter, fuses that 'look' good can still be tripped... (if you do not hear a click when turning the run switch on an off the relay is bad) |

Did you removed the ground strap for the engine when taking off the rear end? Using a volt meter test battery + to the engine block. Seems like you missing the main ground. |

Verified the fuses with a continuity tester. Didn't remove the main - have continuity from battery to head. |

Evlxb, having the same exact problem. did this happen to you once or twice before? happened to me like that but, i toggled the key a few times and all was well but sunday morning....no bueno. i was looking at the manual and i am going to try checking all my relays and fuses tonight. I have jiggled and inspected every wire possible without removing anything and cant seem to find any breaks or bare wires. At this point deductive reasoning leads me to think that its fuses, relays, or worst case scenario ignition/key block. good luck and keep us informed. |

Switch the relays around. one is for the starter and another is for the gauges I think. My starter one failed when I was out riding and shut the bike off for lunch. Switched them around and rode home with no gauges. Actually I think I put one in that gave me power and pop started it. |

Replaced the starter and fuel pump relay - still nothing. Anyone got an ECM they want to sell really cheap? |

Check the horn, if it works, the battery is connected. If not, there's a loose connection, tighten things up. The new battery may need charging before installation. Lots of people forget that. |

Horn works. Dealer thought the check engine light should come on and I should be able to bump the starter even if the ECM is dead. But it doesn't. Battery is ready 14+ volts - plenty of juice. |

I almost hate to admit this - I figured it out. I did not realize the seat rails carry the ground to the frame. So when I put the PC'd seat rails on I did not scrape the coating off at the mounting points - duh. Fired up - on one cylinder anyway - plugs are fouled - new plugs and I think I'm good to go. Thank you all for the help. |

It's always better to find out you made a simple mistake than it is to find an expensive part needs to be replaced. |
