HI, On rebuilding my S3T after the oil pump drive gear going out, I noticed some rub marks on the rear header and a flat spot on the frame tube. The header and tube are contacting at times. I compared the header/frame clearance, and its maybe 1/4 inch, quite less than my bros' S3 and my X1. I can see the isolators moving a bit when rocking the bike off the side stand. I dont think the isolators are shot, its a 2002 w/17,000 miles. I have sucked the header up into the head as much as feels comfortable, I dont want to over tighten the header bolts. Bad build tolerance on the header/frame? Any suggestions or fixes? Thanks! |

Christian, carefully check the forward wishbone mount and placement of the header to muffler junction. The reason this happens is because the muffler mounting pushes the header away from the engine and towards the frame. Take your muffler off and see how much the header moves around. I cured this problem by running a race header. The race header gives a lot more movement side to side because of the way it mounts. If you're using a stock muffler, I don't know if you will be able to cure this problem. If using an aftermarket muffler you can move your header away from the frame by rotating it down and away from the frame and move the muffler to the outside of the centerline of the bike. Hope that makes sense. Frank. |

Frank, thats a great suggestion, I did not think of it. The bike had a Vance Hines, which I took off and put on my X1. Now I am running a Super Trapp. Makes sense that something is out of whack, pushing the header too far out and contacting the frame. I will do some gentle "massaging" of the parts and see if I can gain some clearance. Thanks! Christian |

+1 on what Frank said. When I moved the SS2R from my S1 over to my S3 I had this problem. Joe |
