Yeah - there's a "cool factor" but the main difference is weight savings. You'd have to determine if the weight savings was worth the money. Some lower quality, wet laid-up fiberglass stuff tends to have a lot of brittle cracking in a short period of time. I think American Sport Bike is now selling fiberglass parts out of the same molds that produce their VERY high quality graphite stuff. You might shoot Al an email. |

the carbon well you dont have to paint it.And it has a cool factor too. I contacted H duga and he said the price on the carbon was 2439.00 and fiberglass kit on the gieco bike was 1500.00. look at the cleveland ix center pics in forums .They are both on backorder and was told march to contact him again. The prices make me like my bike the way that it is. |

American Sport Bike has ONLY sold race-quailty bodywork. The stuff I have seen was their own design - and NOT the Racing Bodywork as sold by Buell Racing. I think I heard that in addition to carbon fiber, Al was talking about selling lower cost fiberglass bodywork since so many people were asking. The molds can be used for either. Al was talking about selling lower cost fiberglass bodywork since so many people were asking. Now that would be useful. |

>>>is carbon fiber a big advantage over the other stuff? It is of NO advantage if you are earning less than $500,000 a year racing. You can save more weight by changing boots. |

I like Carbon fiber..........BST WHEELS mostly. But for the eye,Carbon fiber is worlds better than the ugly ABS PLASTIC that the bean counters give us. If i already had an 1125,CF would be high on my list of mods. |

All my blathering aside, the carbon bodywork sold by Buell for the 1125R is top-of-the-line stuff. NOT wet-laid up but made with pre-impregnated fabric and vacuum-bagged into the molds. I had the chance to look closely at the display bike at the IMS here at Long Beach and were I to WANT to go with carbon fiber bodywork, I'd surely have NO question about the quality of what is offered by Buell Racing or by American Sport Bike. Neither one compromises on their quality. My problem is that I fall too often to afford to replace the stuff. I'd guess that going from fiberglass or Surlyn(R) bodywork to the carbon fiber could probably save you nearly 10 pounds (or more)of weight. |

To the original question I must point to Court's comment. It is not worth it in the least to switch plastics to carbon fiber. For the streets, its mostly a vanity thing. Your actual weight loss will be quite insignificant relative to dropping other weighted items. First I'd say swap the can for something with better performance AND lighter weight. The can is quite heavy. But if you just like the looks or something...yeah...knock yourself out. Its your money. It isn't worth it lb. for $. I'd say leave the magneseum wheels and carbon fiber for the race track. Now if this is a question for the race track...then its your call based on your budget. But then why are you asking here if you are a pro racer? |
