I use the recommended HD SYN3 until Warranty is up. That way if the motor/trans/clutch goes they CAN NOT say well you used oil out of factory specs |

I posted this Amsoil study on the Quick board too. I like it for it's insight and info as well as the testing on the popular Motorcycle synthetics. It's up to you if you believe the study or not http://www.amsoil.com/products/streetbikes/WhitePa per.aspx |

Everything I own gets Amsoil...
I'm an Amsoil dealer also, so let me know if anyone wants the "good stuff" at a BadWeB discount. |

FWIW, As long as its syn and within weight, there has never been any credible difference measured on this engine or any other on the outside. Most are advertisements or corp deals... |

Any engine in good shape at my house gets Mobil I, 15-50 full synthetic. Never had a car engine, car gear box, bike engine or bike gear box (old Suzuki 1400 Intruder..!) failure OR spalled surface using the Mobil I. Mike |

I am reading "the HD admonition against using anything other than HD oil is BS." I thought so, but was too scared to try. So is there anything WRONG with the HD synth stuff? |

I switched to Syn3 at the 600 mile service. At the third service, 12.4k, I changed to Red Line, primarily because Syn is only 20w-50. With Winter coming on I wanted 10w-40. Feels good, sounds good. I'll find out in another 4k miles. Z |

I have been running the Syn 3, but I just changed my oil and put Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W50 in it. I'll be anxious to see if it performs any better. I was surprised to find it at Wal-Mart for $8.50/qt. |

I would use Amsoil, but it is more convenient to use the SYN3 since it is at the dealer. I have had to have the clutch rebuilt several times and it would have been a pain to have to cart Amsoil down there every time. I just kept using it since it was convenient. Mike |

I use Mobil 1 15-50w which I buy at Wal Mart for about half the price of HD Syn 3 or Amsoil. As Jerseyguy says, they all work well, if changed regularly. I usual change oil when I change my tires, every 3000 miles or so. While I am there, I normally get some SuperTech oil filters, part no. 4967. They are made by the Champion who make the OEM filters, but they cost a quarter of what the dealer charges. A penny saved is a penny earned, says I.

Buell might be able to deny warranty claims if you were using Amsoil in your bike, not saying they would, because Amsoil does not have an API rating. I have a really hard time believing the claims of Amsoil considering they are an Amway company. |

Zac4mac, what oil/grade were you using prior to your discovery of camshaft damage? |

I found the damage at the 12.4 k service. Was running Syn3, changed to Red Line 10w-40 when she went back together. At 15.5k now, next service will see Red Line 20w-60. Totally unrelated IMO. I'm convinced I got a part that wasn't fully heat-treated. There were no chunks, just black dust on the drain-plug magnet, like ring break-in. Zack |

Redbuelljunkie - not to put you on the spot, but do you know if Amsoil refines their product or has another company do it? This means a lot to me as I refuse to put HD oil in my Buell as their product is said to be produced by Citgo. Screw Citgo. I'd rather not support them. Buell might be able to deny warranty claims if you were using Amsoil in your bike, not saying they would, because Amsoil does not have an API rating. I have a really hard time believing the claims of Amsoil considering they are an Amway company. It is against Federal law for Buell to deny warranty claims based on using non-H.D. oils per the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975. Amsoil 10W-40 Advanced Synthetic M/C Oil has the following performance specification: API SG, SL/CF, CG-4; JASO MA/MA2; ISO-L-EMA2; SAE 80W-90; API GL-1. Amsoil 20W-50 Advanced Synthetic M/C Oil has the following performance specification: API SG, SL/CF, CG-4; JASO MA/MA2; ISO-L-EMA2; SAE 90; API GL-1. There is a lot of research out there that supports Amsoil's claims of the quality of their product. Amsoil is very objective in comparison testing their products against others- their own testing shows that other products (Mobil 1) actually scores higher in certain performance tests. They are so confident in the superiority of their product that they welcome any/all testing because it shows what their oils are capable of. Amsoil chooses to use only the highest-quality synthetics and additives in order to create the highest-performing lubricants available. Amsoil is a multi-level marketing company (like Amway) which means products are sold through independent dealers, catalog sales, online sales, retail accounts (managed by independent dealers), and commercial accounts (managed by independent dealers). Other than the marketing strategy, Amsoil has nothing to do with Amway. Amsoil was started in 1972 by Colonel A.J. Amatuzio because he wanted to provide the same high-quality synthetic lubricants used in his jet aircraft to the average automobile owner. The original premise was to market oils that exceeded the API service requirements- and they're still doing it to this day. I'm not quite sure why, with all the research and testing results available to the public, anyone would have a hard time "believing the claims" of Amsoil... it's pretty straight forward stuff. In fact, Amsoil will guarantee to pay for warranty work denied by a manufacturer based upon the claim of lubricant failure- that's how much they stand behind their product.
