Good to hear you made it.

With the implanted pump

That sounds expensive...

Brian, I hope the pump works out for you. I had MAJOR back surgery about 18 years ago because my sciatic nerve was being compressed by my spinal column due to a break at L4 if I remember correctly. The doctors chiseled out a path for my nerve to go through and stabilized the area with a bone graft from my hip and two rods and four screws. I was in a hard shell brace for six months. I was scared to death because every doctor I saw, except the one who did the surgery advised against it. I went ahead because I was in so much pain 24/7 that I was having a hard time just functioning. I was only 27 and couldn't see living the rest of my life in the constant pain I was in. I am happy to report I have lived a normal and active life since I recovered from the surgery and have not regretted it for a moment. I am not pain free all the time, but my pain is manageable and temporary.

I wish you all the best. I am sure the medical field has made many advancements since my surgery all those years ago and your prognosis is hopefully even better than mine.

Dan

Best wishes for a nearly pain free future. I have felt it and have thanked my good fortune for having to deal with it for only about ten years, the last eight have been pill, shot, and shock free. Back injuries suck because you cannot escape the pain, you can't prop it up or lay it over this way or that. Truly I hope this works for you, I also know how important it is for you to be able to ride.

Unfortunately the sciatic nerve bundle was ripped out at the root so there isn't any
pressure to be relieved from the nerve.

Sorry guys there also won't be any morphine tap available either. This system uses
40cc of morphine that I have to get refilled every 2-6 weeks depending on my dose.
The refill is done with a long needle into my stomach. Fun.

Hopefully this will do the trick while I wait for this country to stop using stem cell
research as a political football because the legislators don't personally know anyone
whose quality of life could be dramatically improved through the use of that technology.
"Frankenscience" it is not.

Sorry guys, I didn't mean to rant, but I'm on IV morphine right now and I tend to run
off at the mouth when I'm under the influence of morphine in this way.

We'll know in the next day or two if this is going to work. I have very high hopes that
this will mean that I'll be in a lot less pain and on less medication at homecoming...
and beyond.

Brian,
Please keep us posted. Very good JuJu heading your way.
Chronic pain isn't something I would wish on anyone. I had a tweaked back for about 6 months, it REALLY messes with your head.
I sincerely hope you get some relief.

Hey, Brian. I'm very glad to hear that things went well. Nerve damage is no fun. Almost five years ago, I, too, was hit by a car. I'm not in as much pain as you are, but I had extensive nerve damage as well. Not a day goes by that I don't hurt. Most times it's bearable, which is good, because even small amounts of morphine make me a very sick boy. A few months ago, I had my ninth surgery since the accident, and I got funny looks when I insisted on no morphine. I got sick from the anesthetic anyway.

I admire your determination very much. Hopefully we'll get another chance to watch the races at Road America, and maybe catch another "stunt show" (otherwise known as How Not to Stand on a Barrel).

"otherwise known as How Not to Stand on a Barrel"

Now that's funny right there I don't care who you are I needed the laugh too.

No, I'm not "outing" the one that put on the stunt show either.

Still going this morning, last night was not much fun, they took away the IV morphine
and the level coming in through the epidural tap isn't cutting it yet, so there wasn't
much sleep for me last night. I'll try to talk more later, having a hard time with focus
right now.

Looks like I'll be here for the weekend + for the trial run. getting as sick as I did
pretty well set us back to square one.

I'm still confident that this is the right way to go, even if it's currently a hassle

Feeling much better today, less nausea and we seem to be on top of the pain (knock on wood).

My doctor (Steve Street) came in to see me today despite the fact he has family in town
from out of state. He's a really good guy.

My wife is bringing the kids in to see me this afternoon. It will be good to see them,
this was supposed to be a short stay in the hospital, but it has turned out to be a
little bigger than we had intended.

Oh yeah, they let me put on some of my own clothes, so I'm sporting my 25th anniversary
Buell t-shirt with my PJ pants.

Gotta represent yo!

ROFLMAO!

Bud may not know how to stand on a barrel, but he has learned to ride a motorcycle on a race track fairly well. He's #419

}

Brian, just get better so you can make it up here from Homecoming! And drag that leaker brother of yours with ya : )

And yes, Not many people get "rock star parking" on a motorcycle ; )

Like I said before, hell or high water I'll be there. Hopefully I'll have all of
this repair work done and be in tip top shape for the summer.

If not I may have to (shudder) drive to some of the events rather than ride, but I'll
still be there!

For the record I kept Bud's name out of the barrel incident until Steve named him!

Also what's this about my brother leaking? He enjoyed homecoming, but his work has kept
him pinned down during homecoming because of the job change and also the lateness of the
announcement of dates....but that's a dead horse.

Hey Toni! I would certainly like to stay with you guys again if it's not too much trouble; )

I really enjoy getting together with everyone at homecoming. If this works like it's
supposed to I could even end up riding up there, but I'm not going to put the cart in front
of the horse and plan it that way.

I am really puzzled by Foxy, every other dog I have ever come across has always loved me from
first sight. Even guard dogs etc. I have had more than one person question what I had done
to their dog to make it like me so much.

I guess if I didn't walk with a cane I wouldn't be able to keep Foxy away (with a stick
even ; )) but them's the breaks I guess

I appreciate your hospitality, and I wouldn't want to presume and impose myself you know?
I really look forward to my annual pilgrimages to homecoming (but you knew that too)
