Ok boys and girls, by now most of you are aware of the fact that I am trying to put together a North American loop for this summer. Knowing that my X petrol more often than I would like, I have decided that an extra fuel container is a must. I have seen some of the Beemers with 1 or 2 gallon cans mounted to the front side of the panniers. I have seen enduro cans that replace number plates and some that bolt on to the rear mudguard. I have also seen some fuel can mounts that bolt up to where the passenger foot pegs pin goes. I think I really like the foot peg type. Do any of you know where I can get something like this for the X ?

How about this set up. Kolpin 1.5 gal, base plate attached to the back rest. You just set the tank on there and lock it down with a the half turn locking thingy.

Wanna carry more gas? Well, this is the only way to go - unless you like spilling gas everywhere trying to pour from a can on the windy roadside.

I saw a guy with a uly that had his external tank mounted on the rear where the tail bag goes, and it was plugged into the breather tube for the main take to make it one large tank. I believe they called it the desert uly or something like that. I will try and find it tomorrow for you because I'm thinkin I would like to do a a bun burner this summer, after riding from Virginia to Kansas I learned stopping for fuel is really time consuming I'd say go for any external fuel you can get.

That Aux tank setup I have is a gravity system through the original tank vent. I'll take some pics on the assy tonight and share them. The tank holds about another 3 gallons. It works great as long as you do not intend to carry a passenger. Also works as a back rest for the slab rides.
I didn't fab it together I got it from 2EVIL4U on the ADV page.

Here is another pic. It goes on it about 10 mins. It kind of fits the ULY look an bit IMO.

Here is the 5 gallon set-up I used on my coast to coast last summer... thought I had a better pic somewhere. I made a fitting to replace the factory drain plug..then used on on-off valve and let gravity do its thing...

I am in the process of having an L shaped tank made now, that will hold just over 5 gallons, and have a place on the back for camping equipment or a laptop..

Wolfridgerider has an aluminum keg set up that goes on the back seat. He has pictures around here somewhere.

Thanks for all the responces. The whole passenger seat thing is cool but I am going to be stowing a big duffle on there that will span from left to right pannier. I will also be using a 45 litre tail bag. For these reasons I was thinking that just a couple of lawn mower cans would be fine. Maybe not ? I have a couple of months to figure it out so all ideas are welcome. I'd like to see that "L" tank too.

Actually I do the same thing and the Kolpin 1.5 is just high enough that if you put a duffle on top it doesn't get in the way of opening the side bags.

I've got the 4.5 gal. Tourtank
I only put in 4 gal when I fill up.
After the low fuel light has been on for about 20 miles I turn the petcock and gravity does the rest.
I have it plumbed into the drain plug.

Hey wolfridgerider what kind of bracket do you have to mount your tank on? Looks like a pretty good setup to me.

Wolfridgerider -

Can I bother you to take and post the a picture of the drain plug area where you've plumed the Tourtank in? I'm thinking of doing this myself and I'd love to see how others have done it.

Thanks.

Getting off the bike?... about 180.. lol... I'm getting older

I need to do a Iron Butt ride to see how far I can go without stopping.

I did 250 to 290 miles without putting my feet down on my BBG. Couple of months back rode from LI to Lake George and back with one fuel stop in Lake George. Thats about the max I am able to sit without stretching my legs, and my knees start to kill...

Iron Butt folks long ago put a stop to the catheters after that dude on the gold wing had himself "vented" to the pavement, water piped into him and the hundred gallons of fuel. . . .I guess after a couple hundred miles I just get bored. My strategy, for covering distance, is to stop but keep the stop pretty short.

Cool stuff.

My last cross country trip, I made consistent 325-335 miles w/o stopping. IBA rules require a gas receipt every 350 miles.

I'm good for a couple days of that type of riding, then the body starts complaining.

I don't want the extra fuel so I can ride longer between stops. I want it so I don't have to worry about running out of fuel.

On my Labrador excursion this past September, I came close to getting stranded a few times. There simply weren't enough options for refueling where I was riding. A 1.25 gallon can strapped to the pax peg helped a little with peace of mind but it would have been nice to have had that extra fuel in the primary tank.

That makes sense . . . I see your point now and I'd like the peace of mind of refueling with 100 of fuel on board than fumes.

Hehehehehe. . . . can you tell some of us are pilots?

I'll bet we could share stories about how we learned how "switch to fullest fuel tanks" got on so many pre-landing checklists. . . my experience was over the outer marker on a Cessna 310.

: )

The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire

I haven't flown GA in a long time Court...but I've got the bug and would like to get back into it this year. If you're interested in splitting the cost of some $100 cheeseburgers (I guess they're more like $500 these days) let me know. I keep my CFMEII current.

I'm also thinking about getting my glider add-on. Wurtsboro is huge glider-port...about 1.5 hours ride north of the city. Nice three hour round trip on the Uly when the weather's a bit nicer.

I've checked the total distance on my setup one time (365 mile to burn out). I had to get off around the 250 mark. When I go for more than 1000 miles a day I get off the bike every 100 miles for 5 mins. Being a former Blackhawk Crewchief I have also developed a 2.5 hour bladder. I also learned the lessons of "never passing gas"!!!!

Since all the LD riders are posting here I'll highjack for a second. I've heard of a few folks going for a DUSTYBUTT, IBA approved ride, this spring in the mid west. Does anyone else think this is a worth while effort of the ULY. No ULY has completed it yet. 1000 miles all dirt roads!?!?!?

>>> I've got the bug and would like to get back into it this year.

I've had the bug too and every time I drive my Linden and see folks doing touch and go's I get the bug to fly again.

I used to fly quite a bit but no where NEAR the level all you guys do . . . I'm a pure CAVU SEL guy who just loved cruising around. All my flying was leisure and work and most my hours (something like 300) are in 172RG, 182, and a Piper Saratoga.

Flying, and I'm sure to some of you guys it's "work", is one of the most liberating leisure time activities.

Believe me Court...I'm just looking to rent something cheap. I've potentially got a line on a Warrior or possibly even a Tramuahawk.

I get paid to go fly fast. When I'm paying out of my own pocket...90 knots is fast enough. Block Island is about as far as I'm interested in going.
