My 07 uly was sitting for about three weeks, I was waiting for my Spec Ops to arrive. The bike was on a trickle charger. I installed the pipe, and tried to start It, when I turned the key on and kill switch to on I got no engine light and no fuel pump!! I messed with some fuses checked battery cables, the usual easy fixes. when I turned the key everything worked and the bike started and ran for about three minutes then died. I could not get the engine light and fuel pump to work again!! Please Help!! |

Wiggle the steering head and see if it comes back. I have a short in mine too. |

I tried that, and checked most of the wires under the front and the ground on the steering head. I think it may have something to do with the BAS. |

You mean like a sending unit? |

Not like a sending unit. The relays are in the fuse box and have been known to go haywire. Seems like the test is to swap them around and see if the problem persists. |

After looking at my service manual I noticed there is a ground beside the fuse box I forgot to check before I dropped it off at the dealer, that could also be it.Nutsosane and Panhead I did not swap relays and agree that may also be the problem. Thanks for the info!! Ill keep yall informed when the dealer calls back... |

Did you leave it on a charger or a tender? |

Yes, the bike is on the trickle charger at all times when not ridden!! |

Had an ECM go bad on my 07 a few months ago. Same symptoms, no check engine light and no fuel pump whir. It was intermittent for while, kinda thought it was a broken wire or bad ground. It finally decided to die for good when I was 80 miles away from home. Perfect timing. |

Do you think that the battery tender was the problem? I am considering getting one, but not sure. I try to ride at least every couple of weeks at least for a while but lately I haven't been able to find the time. |

Highly doubt it. |

Dirt mine was only intermittent once, as in one start for three minutes and the bike died and I never got the engine light or fuel pump again!! I could have sworn it was a fuse or a relay. I doubt the charger had anything to do with it chrisgrant. |

Hi guys first post for me but been here for months...all great stuff and lots of reading. However this got my attention because it sounds like what I have going on. I have an 08 XB12X had a failed speed sensor and exhaust actuator at 1300miles, replaced by dealer. Now have same happening again at 2800miles thought it was same thing but reading this sounds like the ECM. It is intermitent some times speedometer works and bike runs fantastic. I will stop somewhere for gas etc. start her up and no speedometer and engine light comes on. Is this what was happening to you 'Scottk'??? Anybody else have a clue?? Thanks Jason |

My question has to do with chargers and might relate to your situation. Some say and others deny, that turning on the ignition when the charger is plugged in can result in a surge from the charger which is reading a drop in battery reserve as the fuel pump, ignition and lights are fed with current, and the compensation from the charger can fry the ecm. A theory similar to the rule of never boosting a bike from a running car or truck because the alternator of the boost vehicle can overwhelm the bike system and destroy the ecm. Comments anyone? |

Slipknot As long as it's a trickle charger or a battery tender, it can't happen. The battery itself has much more amps. Ullygan This happened to me. Look very closely at the ecm. Specificly the end that the two big plug ins are on. Press down lightly on the plug ins and look for a crack openning along the top back edge of the ecm. If it is present, your ecm is busted and the seat is what broke it. |

Quote from Ullygan: "I will stop somewhere for gas etc. start her up and no speedometer and engine light comes on." I had this happen to me about a month ago. Hasen't happened since. See this thread: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/428035.html?1231947864 |

Mine did similar stuff 3 times in one afternoon. Some of the lights on the dash would not come on and the starter would not engage.. I took off the little plastic wire guide on the steering head and ran the wires a little straighter then wrapped the whole thing in clear plastic tubing...has not happened since...that was almost a year ago... This is on an 06, the later models have a different wire router..I think.. |

I don't think you can hurt it with a charger. I'd be looking for nicks in the ECM cable bundle (can be hard to see, but look for chafe points) or a loose ground. Near the battery terminals, and as Adrian said, near the steering neck are common chafe points. |

Thanks everyone ... I will investigate the wiring and the top of the ECM As far as a charger causing it I never used a charger on the bike before the first incident so it can't be related. I use a trickle charger now but never started the bike with it connected and never had a jump from another vehicle. I think it is a short, loose wire etc. because it is on and off. Ill keep you posted as to my findings. Thanks Jason |

I took off the cable guide at the steering head to inspect mine, where it is folded over there was a sharp edge poking my wire harness,I just ground that off, taped the harness and reassembled. Its easier if you remove the headlight assy. |

Slipknot, I believe that as long as the trickle charger is connected directly to the battery, the battery will/should (if the battery is healthy) absorb current spikes, if any, from the charger. However, if one tries to start the engine with a charger connected, the heavy current from the starter motor can temporarily overload the charger unless there is a current limiting circuit built-in or, if not and it has a circuit breaker or fuse in the charger lead, it may blow the breaker or fuse -- speaking from experience in the latter case. |

Ullygan, In my case only two things did not work, that was the engine light and the fuel pump. I was able to start my Uly one time for three minutes then it died and would not start again! I never could get the engine light and fuel pump to come on again. It sounds like something is funny with your ECM also. With my new ECM the Uly is like a whole other bike. Hope you get it figured out!! |

Thanks Scottk,I am going to take a look tomorrow and eliminate other possibility's before I drive 100 miles to my nearest dealer.. I want to be able to go over it with them so I can get my bike back ASAP. last time it went up there it took 3wks. The distance sucks! |

many of these intermiten problems have turned out to be gad grounds you would not be the first uly owners to have these unusual come and go symptoms. The tech who found the source of all my whoas sad he believed it should be a re-call on many newer model ulysses and I agree. Turns out the painted surfaces of alum. tail section did not provide enough current to pass through so the ECM would fart burb and sneese when ever it wanted to. It's enough for any wise person to investigate and check these ground points. They are the ones next to the fuse box below the seat and the bat neg grnd it's self. good luck any way and keep us posted |
