You know 4 months from now the major news outlets will not even acknowledge that there were campaign promises made, and will deride anyone that brings up anything negative from the list (ie a promise not fulfilled) as a racist, or small minded person. Then again I'm not someone that defines myself by party, but by policy, so I pay attention these things....uh-oh, I bet I'm in for it |

I think its a good idea to track any politicians promises, only problem is if he/she doesn't live up to them, what consequence is there.... It always pisses me off how ever person running for election says they will cut taxes, but mine keep going up!! So what the F* is that! |

I agree 110% then again I don't think that there should be any such thing as a career politician. Can you imagine working at a career, retiring and in retirement making TWICE as much as your max pay while working? That is exactly the situation I saw hard numbers for. Not to politicize it, but Al Gore Sr. was the example used. That kind of increase in pay after retirement AND not paying a dime of FICA.....is it any wonder these people get in office and then ride that incumbency into the sunset? Bah Humbug! |

I put it up not to show the lack of stuff done this week but more so to show that people were paying attention to what he said/promised and quite frankly I believe how close he sticks to those promises will determine what he will be doing in just under 4 years. People are hungry for a change and if that hunger is not fed they will, hopefully, realize he was like all the other politicians and he will get voted out. I am not hoping for his failure what I am hoping for is his ability to do things he said he would in a cost effective and also realistic timeline manner. Most of the talk has not been that. |

Doesn't matter what his promises are, some people were quick to blame him for things before he even got inauguarated. He's been in less than a week and he's already being blamed for the economy. Note to GOP- your guy was in charge for 8 years, heckuva job. Note to libs - Obama isn't a miracle worker. He's no Bill Clinton, and he doesn't have an unlimited supply of unicorns and rainbow dust. Everyone give him some friggin time. |

If you watched the speech on the emission standards you saw some partisan duck and dodge. P-BO is an elequent speaker, I understand to a degree the issues the Automakers face with multiple standards for emissions, right now may not be the best time to tighten the standards. How ever As P-BO points out we have to stop talking and do some thing. Perhaps cali emmission standards US wide then no issues taging cars that wind up in Ppls Republic of Cali, one set of rules simple and yes your car will cost more for this. I am not blaming him I am watching to see if he goes head on with some thing of substance or just great retorhic Time will tell, (Message edited by oldog on January 27, 2009) |

I'd prefer rhetoric if his great plan is to keep white, male, experienced construction workers out of the economic stimulus. Social engineering is what helped to cause the financial problems. Social engineering will create even more problems with the financial systems. I'd prefer feckless over effective in enacting dubious policies. |

I'd prefer rhetoric if his great plan is to keep white, male, experienced construction workers out of the economic stimulus. As I understand it the commentary is from some rube school teacher, that got a political appointment in the Clinton Era I'm with Court, let the "screamer" drive over the bridge that they build with the "cronicaly nonworking" oversite Social engineering is what helped to cause the financial problems. Social engineering will create even more problems with the financial systems I agree, but inaction / innapropriate action may do far worse. In the end you cant engineer out the IDIOTS as when you idiot proof some thing the idiot gets improved. We the people should stop being sheep. (Message edited by oldog on January 27, 2009) |

If they wanted to correct the mess, they would allow the market to work by giving money back to those who paid taxes. Driving money down to welfare mothers and deadbeats as social engineering will NOT drive the economy back into the black. Inaction would be better than THAT action. It's and investment with no return. It's a taxpayer black hole. |

they would allow the market to work by giving money back to those who paid taxes. I agree, the two orders I watched him sign were relating to better gas milage ( cut dependence on FO ) and requireing a re opening of the hearings on emissions reg exemptions for CA the auto makers have to do that allready [ca regs compliance]. This was suggested long ago, at first I thought that the fair tax thing was a gimic, perhaps now it is not, the other thing that would help folks IMO years ago ALL credit card interest was tax deductable as home loan interest is, that should be returned, I too am concerned when social engineering is attempted by government OR business Would you call those orders social engineering ?, P-BO says he wants to "stimulate re-investment" is it creating a burden or are we missing an opportunity to simplify the regs, perhaps the regs should be written for ca if thats the worst place for air polution? one set of rules. We need jobs here in the us, not small busines jobs only, But manufacturing and the like, Infastructure upgrades and improvements are not wasting the taxpayers money, What about that bridge that collapsed in miniapolis?, It should have been repaired,In your mind would that repair been a good investment? The Clinton appointee reich i think should not be making any selections as the limited comments posted by Court give me a sense that this person lacks the sense to do that job. I don't care who runs the construcion co so long as the business operates legaly, safely and does proper work [ refering to Courts comment about driving on that brdge ]. My guess is that when the welfare mothers anddead beats that don't want to work don't take the job the Males and Females white or other wise that want a job will do so, I have said for years that we cant all work for wall mart or mcdonalds, and when all of the manufacturing jobs go off shore, and the remaining work is service work then you [ WE ] are ripe for a fall Has any one thought about what this may mean to food production, where are the unemployed going to live? Social experiment or charity? I do not want to support generations of "entitlement" familys I do not want to see honest hard working folks who are in a rough patch, in the street. The means to do this are not beyond accomplishment I wish I had an answer. } (Message edited by oldog on January 27, 2009) |

We need jobs here in the us, not small busines jobs only, But manufacturing and the like, Infastructure upgrades and improvements are not wasting the taxpayers money, "Small" business creates 2/3 of the jobs here in the US. Many of these ARE manufacturing jobs. It's companies like Precision Engineering (BW Sponsor) who do the machining and manufacturing jobs here. What about that bridge that collapsed in miniapolis?, It should have been repaired,In your mind would that repair been a good investment? The bridge wasn't repaired because the Minnesota State government chose to utilize tax revenues for social programs instead of infrastructure improvements. There will always be folks who are at the bottom. Sometimes there are folks who simply aren't willing to work or sacrifice to advance and succeed. The answer isn't to take from those who DO work and DO sacrifice and give to those who don't. The parable of the ant and the grasshopper comes to mind. If we want to make our society prosper, we should be working to make business successful here in the US. Why create a system whereby there is a financial incentive NOT to create jobs, not to create new businesses and not to keep the labor here? Why? Because there is no power in that. Everyone has a chance to advance when the market is fertile for business. |

Which "Ant and the Grasshopper"? The old one or the new one? The Ant & the Grasshopper - Updated Version -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Old Version: The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed. The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold. Moral of the Story: Be Responsible for Yourself! Modern Version: The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while others are cold and starving. CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food. America is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so? Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper and everybody cries when they sing, "It's Not Easy Being Green" Jesse Jackson stages a demonstration in front of the ant's house where the news stations film the group singing, "We Shall Overcome". Jesse then has the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper's sake. Nancy Pelosi and John Kerry exclaim in an interview with Larry King that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share. Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer. The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the government. Hillary gets her former employer, the Rose Law Firm, to represent the grasshopper in a defamation suit against the ant, and the case is tried before a jury comprised of single parent welfare recipients. The ant loses the case. The story ends up as we see the grasshopper finishing up the last bits of the ant's food while the government house he is in, which just happens to be the ant's hold house, crumbles around him because he doesn't maintain it. The ant has disappeared in the snow. The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the once peaceful neighborhood. Moral of the Story: Be Careful how you vote! |

I didn't write it, got it months ago in an email, unattributed, so I have no idea who the clever author is. But I sure thought it was funny in a too close to reality kinda way. I'm a big believer in the ant/grashopper fable (OLD one!). If everyone just learned the golden rule and lived by that fable, the world would be a much better place. What's that they say, everything we REALLY need to know, we learned in kindergarten. Al |

"What about that bridge that collapsed in miniapolis?, It should have been repaired,In your mind would that repair been a good investment?" The bridge was being worked on when it collapsed. The extra weight of the construction equipment was the trigger. The cause of the collapse was not poor maintenance, it was a mistake made during construction. Some of the structural pieces were thinner than the design called for. This is a red herring that the Dems used to bash Bush, nothing more. If it were that important, their man Clinton should have done something about it. Right, like the president can dictate to the states what road projects they should take on. Or call out the state's national guard for that matter, but I digress. |

The bridge wasn't repaired because the Minnesota State government chose to utilize tax revenues for social programs instead of infrastructure improvements. Ok so now rather than repair the bridge they must replace it, If I were a resident of that area I would be asking why the repairs were put off, on top of the monetary loss Lives were lost, because of irresponcible decisions were made at the state or local level, Individuals who made those decisions in my mind have some explaining to do. There will always be folks who are at the bottom. Sometimes there are folks who simply aren't willing to work or sacrifice to advance and succeed. I agree, and to the grass hoppers its a tough life, to the ants that can't find work starve ? Small businesses can do some amazing things, however we need the Boeings, GE's etc, to build the big stuff, I mean to me BMC fits the definition of a small business when considered seperately from HD. I agree with you FT in most instnaces, I how ever have paid into the "social programs" for over 30 years and may soon need that assistance while I look for work, I do not want to sit on the dole but IF I had to pay in why can't I draw out, 3 years ago in better economy I was able to work as a contractor rather than go on un employment, That option may not be on the table this time. My F.E. paid severance of which the Government took half, I still have some of it, social programs have their place, And there were "Grasshoppers" when that office closed. P-BO says he is going to take action, on the issues the only one I question (so far) is the short term tightening of the milage requirements, for autos, as this may burden the cash straped automakers, just now, how ever it is a step in the right direction and should be looked into, Face it action taken to help lessen the need for imported oil is good if we use some sense on how we do it, I do not support the "spread it around" doctrine AND I do not support the current partisan squabble, part of the answer is chaniging the culture, and part is making the public office holders responcible to the PPL that put them there for making responcible decisions. Build a park / or library or cultural center or fix the bridge? I would think that unemployment and roadway maintence are not on the same line of the minnesota budget. Al's interesting and Stinging commentary has a lot of merrit, please do not confuse my comments with the "grasshopper set" thinking, I want to work IF I can afford it will go back to school if needed, It wont be the first time, as I don't want to work for wal-mart or mic-dees In the end watching the actions of our public officials is part of personal responcibilities of being a citizen. |

The cause of the collapse was not poor maintenance, it was a mistake made during construction. Some of the structural pieces were thinner than the design called for. Excuse me for using that then. I did not know this, there are a number of bridges that are years behind on inspection and repairs, as I recall the span fell at rush hour, Its laughable that any one would think that "Bush" was responcible in any way, The press needs to clean up its act. |

I think you're right, it did fall during rush hour. The investigators said that if it had just been the commuters, it wouldn't have fallen. It was the weight of the construction equipment AND the normal weight of the cars that did it. But according to the bridge blueprints, they were still well within the structural limits of the bridge. The bridge was not built to specs, and that's what caused the failure. |
