From the dealer show in Washington DC: With a defiant attitude embracing the pure essence of riding, the new Iron 883 model is the latest Harley-Davidson® Dark Custom™ motorcycle. Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycles like the Iron 883 have stood against the grain since their introduction in 1957, when the modern rebel culture was being bred from restless veterans and hot rod pioneers. Sportster motorcycles became the starting point for many legendary choppers of the 1960s, while also getting pumped up for championship dirt racing and dare devil stunt riding in the 1970s. The Iron 883 model continues that rebellious tradition with responsive handling, smooth clutch effort and durable carbon reinforced drive belt while pushing the styling of motorcycling minimalism to the edge. Decked in black from fender-to-fender, the new Harley-Davidson Iron 883 motorcycle brings the beat of an 883 Evolution® engine backed up by a combo of gritty, old-school garage features like front fork gaiters, drag style handlebar and side-mount license plate holder. A ticket to ride the Iron 883 starts at just $7,899 MSRP, leaving plenty of freedom for customization. “The Iron 883 defies the plastic conventions of other motorcycles at this price,” said Mark-Hans Richer, Harley-Davidson Chief Marketing Officer. “It’s got old school style, a new school ride and gives the owner a platform for creative customization.” The black powder-coated 883cc Evolution powertrain with black covers takes the Iron 883 deep into the heart of darkness. With Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI) and performance tuning with a broad torque curve, the Iron 883 delivers plenty of power for the city scene. The pipes on the straight cut shorty dual exhaust flow the distinctive Harley-Davidson V-Twin sound. The black chopped rear fender with its combination stop/turn/tail lights shows more of the 150 mm rear tire and black, 13-spoke cast aluminum wheel, while the front tire also rides on a black wheel. The rest of the Iron 883 gets a darker-suited presence with black front forks and fender supports, fuel tank, oil tank cover, belt guard, drag style handlebar and mid mount foot controls. A one-piece, solo classic seat with a height of 25.3 inches fits the lone rider, while a passenger seat and a backrest in complementing black finishes can be added as accessories. As the latest of the Harley-Davidson Dark Custom motorcycles, the Iron 883 is stripped down and ripe for custom creativity. Dark Custom motorcycle riders have the youngest average age for Harley-Davidson buyers. just saw the ad... Somebody handed the guy reading it ad copy that didnt match the bike. They are more flat track bars than drag bars (your traditional broom stick with controls) The exhaust is the same tapered weak chrome stock on all the Sportsters (other than the XR) They are not straight cut shorties in any sense. I would insert a pic of my Sporter, but it is up on the lift getting a new set of black laced wheels that got lifted off a Nightster. Pics as it gets done. It will sell like hotcakes ... hotcakes, now I am hungry | ||

For classic good looks at a great price, one couldn't beat the original 883 with stock blacked out pipes. "Iron" is trendy, but overpriced. They could have done as much for less money. Remember when black was cheap and chrome cost more? For $8k give me spoked wheels with black hubs and rims. I hope it sells. | ||

Nothing like building a bike and opening a magazine (or website) and seeing all your ideas used. Or spending a bunch of time and money on a custom part only to see it offered in the next catalogue that comes out. Good to see the factory is keeping up with trends, though. | ||

Yeah, burns my biscuit. It doesnt look like it, but there is over 4k in custom parts, accessories and color on that ride. Still to do, the antique dash from the 57, solid chrome rear shocks... and the wheels are getting done this month. All told it is probably the most damn cost over run 883 out there. Still has too much chrome on it for my tastes, but now I dont want to look like every other Nightster or Iron out there, so the chrome bits there will stay. | ||

I like the Iron 883. Very nice looking bike. I'll see if I can wrangle a test ride from the local dealer. But it better be a really nice ride to make me give up my ZX-10R. Different riding style, I know. | ||

Looks just like the Nighster with the smaller motor. I find them both too tight for anyone taller than 5'8" unless you switch to forward controls. | ||

Well, HD of St. Augustine got one in. It wasn't fully assembled. but one of the salesman let me in the back storage room to see it. It is BLACK! I mean, it absorbs light. Very mean looking. The handlebars are not as wide as the Nightster's. Overall, a very nice, tight design, with a competitive price point. Harley needs lower priced bikes. It's one of the few bikes I'd consider buying new, and I'm not even a Harley fan. So, pick up an Iron 883 or an '08 1125R? Maybe the Honda Fury? Kalali is right - if you're tall, this bike would make you feel really cramped. Being that I'm 5-7, it fit me just fine. (Message edited by vanvideo on January 29, 2009) | ||

To me, they look like the same bars from the 2008 base model 883, but in flat back. You can compare the bikes on the HD website. The 883R bars look taller. Jammer, how much did the Iron go for? I've heard they're asking thousands over MSRP. (Message edited by vanvideo on February 01, 2009) | ||
