Took my exhaust header off and noticed that there was no gasket. It appeared that the gasket, I think, is embedded into the exhaust port. I suspect that it has attached itself since this is the first time it has been off the bike. My question is before I start scraping, should the exhaust port be clean and down to bare metal? Or am I removing something I shouldn't? Kinda looks like an "SOS pad gasket".....know what I mean? Thanks |

Yes its a metal mesh gasket, just pluck/pick away. You will get down to a nice little seat for the new ones. There just smashed in there. |

Oh save yourself some time at the dealer and just order the evo sportster gaskets there the same thing. Now dont mention that these are for a buell or you will just confuse the poor parts guy and he may treat you different,Ah hell just say it and watch the fanfare commence |

Put the new ones in the freezer to shrink them a bit before installing them. |

GASKET,exhaust port PN 65324-83A is no good as it squeezes into the port, plus it is not easy to install ... Gasket, exhaust port PN 17048-98 is much easier to install and can be turned over and reused ... |

Is that prt# good for an 01 x1. And is there a retaining ring that holds the gasket in? A breakdown I have shows a retaining ring. Thanks |

The retaining ring goes on the pipe and gives the clamp something to hold so it can mash the pipe into the head. Nothing keeps the gasket thingy in there other than the pipe being mashed in there. |

So what does the good one look like before install? The ones I put in last were like the lower corner of a cylinder. You know, like a funnel inside? If I have the "bad ones" I won't go in there but I'm just a bit curious. |

Natexlh1000: Glad you ask'ed that ... The good PN 17048-98 are thin and fit perfectly in the exhaust port notch which you must make sure is clean before inserting the new one in ... These are so good that "i" turned them over and reused ... "BUT" like installing, removing one to turn over you must be careful ... |

Buellistic Is the 17048-98 The right gasket for a 01 X1. I do not have a parts manual yet. And I want to be able to just give the dealer the # cause my local dealer doesn't like Buells. Thanks in advance |

Rabert dig through the KV I did an extensive tear down of the forks and was delighted when Goingwindward added the XB info to the basic procedure, My two thoughts, have all of the pieces before you start, and cleanliness is every thing, the assembley except for driving the seals is straight forward. Intake seals skip the coffee that morning or at least limit it look through the KV and ask here I ahve done them its straight forward. |
