Because a mate of mine had managed to scare himself when he accidentally popped a wheelie at a light on his new CBR125 that has a whopping 9.7 kw @ 10,000 rpm; I actually expected to be surprised by a wheelie on my 09 R. Actually wondered how I would handle it!
Been over 2,000 km, and the only surprise is that the bike hasn't even attempted a wheelie, even with the solenoid neutralised.
So obviously I'm "doing it wrong". Someone with knowledge and experience tell me "how to", or perhaps point me to a You Tube or other web link?
I'd like to know the what/when/where/why/how of it all, BEFORE it happens. Yes, I know wheelies aren't legal in my state.

rev bike, dump clutch. Only way on a motor that small.
The first time my 1125R raised the front unintentionally, was when I was in 2nd gear and coming up on a stop light. The light turned yellow and I gave it a little too much gas and ended up riding a nice wheelie through the intersection. I am sure that anyone who saw it thought I was showing off, because it looked really good and turned out to be a perfect wheelie, but it was purely by accident. Thankfully, everything turned out well. I must say that the bike responds very well to the rider, which made it a funny story instead of a repair/pain killer bill.
i like doin wheelies in 2nd only because 1st comes up FAST and wants to keep goin if ur not careful. so when ur in 2nd at like 60 to 70 mph give it gas then let off rate as the front sags down give at gas sharply. as ur comin of the gas enitially (before gassin back on) have ur arms bend. as ur giving it gas pop ur self back, sorta kinda popping ur elbows strait and ur bike will come up nicely and its very easy to control it for beginning to learn how to wheely.
and also ur front end doesnt come down as hard if u dont gratuelly come of the throttle. usually because ur not at the balance point and ur speed is increasing which brings ur front down.
hope this helps.
other wish just do the same thing in first with the whole throttle let off and on at 5000rpms. just be careful its powerful. hehe
1st or 2nd gear, grab a whole lotta throttle real fast. Amazing how quick that front comes up when you get on it. Especially when coming out of a turn on the track.
Wheelies are getting boring! I'm still perfecting my rolling stoppies. I can get it up and keep it up at 55-60 and coast it to a stop, waiting for a dampener till i get it at higher speeds. FYI, I always get tank slap bringing the front wheel down at high speeds (85 and up) without a dampener, find a big parking lot and practice practice practice.
where im from theres no parkin area big enough. but the drag strip has a 1/4mile 6 lane pavement patch. also about a 45 minute drive theres a private air strip, although the air strip is risky. ive heard rumors of it being a federal offense. i heard this from a person that i was there with. which i dont really know so im currently doin research on it so i can enjoy it instead of worrying.
oh and unless u know where the back brake is as well as the throttle take it easy. keep her to 10-11 oclock.
I got my bike back good as new 3 months and $5700 later (thankfully I only had to pay the $250 insurance deductible).
It happened quite fast, but I believe what I did wrong was accidentally clutch it up in 1st gear. I had never previously (nor since) even attempted a clutch-up wheelie and did not intend to do so that time either.
Woah, Paul! You pulled through alright, I imagine? Looks like your leathers held up nicely...
Let me guess what happened... as the front end lifted you were pushed back and accidentally opened the throttle more? Just curious, because that's probably what would happen to me!
From now on, I'll always weight the footpegs and unweight my hands whenever I launch...
400th POST!!! Only 26,272 more needed to catch Blake!!
The bike stood up on me and dumped me on my ass, then I rolled down the street as my bike apparently cartwheeled (I couldn't see it and there were no witnesses to visually confirm) and then slid to a stop on its right side.
I had to visit the chiropractor and massage therapist a couple times a week for about a month... That and a sore ass for 2 days were the extent of my physical ramifications.
I had on my Vanson nylon mesh jacket and fortunately a backpack strapped to me which softened my tumble. Amazingly nothing within the backpack was damaged (good thing because there was a $1900 tablet PC among other technical gadgetry). The saddlebags were damaged along with a tire gauge which is still functional, so I didn't replace it. The jacket didn't have a scratch or tear at all. The backpack was also in excellent shape. My ass seemed to take the majority of the impact.
FINALLY!! Yesterday I accidentally did a mono on my R, apparently (THINK) by winding it up tight in first leaving a light, then a clutchless upshift to second and trying to wind it up again: ROARRRRRRRRRR and up it went. Scary/fun. Doubt that the VTR1000F next to me knew what to think. I eased off out of instinct and down it went again, then screwed the throttle again and it went along quite nicely on two.
As a new rider, I've wheelied just twice --- both times accidentally. The first time, I was basking in a little too much attention from the ladies and dumped the clutch off the line. A little scary, but I think I pulled off the old "I meant to do that." The second time, I was catching up to my buddy on his chopper, just screaming along in second at around 7000 rpm. I didn't even realize I had it up until I shifted to 3rd --- and the wheel touched down! My friend said I was riding the thing since before I passed him.
I can't stand doing those power on wheelies. They always felt so out of control compared to clutch assisted wheelies, and looked out of control for the people I've see do them.
Just hit about 35-45 in 2nd gear slight flip on clutch and gas it, goes up smooth and stays smooth imo.
1. Instinctively I was leant over the airbox while in my first gear runup, so perhaps had more control over the mono when it surprised me.
2. Made me think, it was like discovering your girlfriend is a vampire: you still want to spend time with her, but you're not willing to stick your neck out so far as before!
Red 80 or 90 k's in second crack throttle wide open up she comes then click gears as required they are a very well ballanced motorcycle always keep your right foot over the brake pedal for security
i love it in 2nd with the flick the clutch but you must be ready when it comes up !! i got it down on cold days i can get it to burn the tire as its on the way up . my harley buds love that
Oooh my gosh! Here again another wheelie thread! Mine wheelies @ will! Mabie cause I'm a light rider, or cause I grab a lot of throttle and twist. NO CLUTCH needed! Altough I'm not trying to be Jason Britton or antthing, 600's are the fizzle duzzle for that! The 1125 is too powerful for stunting, I just enjoy power wheelies and that front end wiggle on a soft touch on the ground after the 2-3 shift makes me giddy! By the way 3rd gear pulls air also!!!
Doesn't this bike power wheelie in first at full throttle? Even little 600's will anymore. My Aprilia did in first and with a tug in second. No clutch and with much less power.
I just sit up straight and give it some gas. Like a quick blip. When it starts to come up i bend my elbows to take the weight off the front. It stands right up. Dont need to pop the clutch at all.
this bike surely powers up in first. its pretty much to fast. which comes in the clutch up. but in 2nd its very cool and very easy (even for beginners.) plus if u just met a girl and ur on the interstate(she and a car) it looks much better if u can only hold it up for 10-20 seconds.
no rice- i half expect to see u go by the first time then once we lose sight of u we'd all of a sudden see u coming back by riding a wheelie again. like u some how did a wheelie u-turn and rocketed back up the road. lol. good stuff.
second gear, roll on it till you hit 6 or 7K and then roll it and feel it come up, if you do it right, its pretty subtle, stay close to the tank and dont lean back because might accidentally roll the throttle too much and flip it, practice rolling it up, then you can try and balance it for longer ones, also keep your foot on that back break, in case she tries to go too far, give it some brake and she'll come back down, not too hard though, i've seen people come down looking like a jet landed with smoke coming from tire, you dont want that, let her down slow.
