I would have to agree that there hasn't been another TV series of recent time that measures up to BSG. The last series I followed was X Files. | ||

X files was da bomb till it got weird but I guess everything jumps the shark eventualy except that damn law and order I can't believe I am saying this but I been watching that show for like 15 years now I aint gaga over it but its on like 8 channels and if I sit down and its on I'll watch it | ||

Of course BSG is Sci-Fi. Somehow people have gotten the impression that if it's a good story with good acting something can't be "real Sci-Fi". The reverse of this attitude (Sci-Fi by definition has a crappy story and crappy acting) seems to be the standard among movie and book critics. +1 for what FB said. I'm very interested to see where the series is going now. | ||

BSG has been able to do what Star Trek really wasn't fully able to do. They have been able to incorporate mostly familiar aspects into a future show. Now, some of that was a little over the top. How is it that a society 2000 years removed and in a completely different part of the galaxy was still able, independently, to come up with H&K MP5's, Hummers, and Jimmy Hendrix?  The other Sci-Fi show that I miss was Space: Above and Beyond.  I thought it did a really good job of capturing military decorum and struck a familiar chord. | ||

Hugh, what I mean is that BSG isn't science fiction just for the sake of being science fiction. The writing, drama, and acting are there where in many other cases they are not. | ||

Because most Sci-fi is crap, people think it's crap, like most made for SciFi channel movies. They forget most TV is crap, and almost all movies are crap. Science fiction is "for" a couple of things. It's the literature of Ideas. You can take an existing situation and make it an acceptable object for discussion by placing it on another world, or in the distant future. Swift did this a lot. H.G. Wells is mostly political, but seen through the lens of futurism, he could get away with stuff he'd never be able to publish as a contemporary novel. You can explore trends by pushing the envelope. An excellent example is Niven's stories about organlegging. If transplants are common, won't a black market develop? If a criminal can save more lives than he took, why shouldn't we break him up for parts? Both things are happening NOW. You can do classic stories with new heroes & plot twists. D. Drake is open that he "steals" plots & situations from classic Roman and other literature. D. Weber owes much to Horatio Hornblower stories. Everyone rips off Shakespeare! But all the great authors put their characters & plot twists on display. Battlestar Galactica has explored terrorism, relationships under deadly stress, the nature of man and the slaves we declare not human in order to exploit them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orLMbzb3D30 | ||

Farscape was a great show on Sci-Fi. Most of the movies produced by Sci-Fi are awful mostly because the writing is bad and the special effects are worse. Lexx was entertaining in a sleezy kinda way. Star Trek has been the greatest example of a great storyline displayed against a futuristic backdrop. I can't wait for the new Star Trek movie. Damn it looks good! |
