You can link to the video or you can scroll down and see the embedded video. 1st start was cold in the morning 2nd. sat for 2 hours after 15 min ride. 3rd sat 15 min after 45 min ride on highway. This is the most common problem.
I made it to see if anyone has a common issue and how it was fixed. I also did it so I could show my dealer that it is a problem and not something I have "to deal with" and wait for a solution. That was quoted from the Harley Service Dept.
my CR does that after ive been riding and need to stop for gas. your not alone. i just figured the gas smell in the garage after a ride had some thing to do with the bad hot starts......who knows, love my cr to death though!
Never had that happen on my '08...Definitely not right. I agree with everyone suggesting you take it to the dealer. Since you've got the video, take that as well to show what you mean.
did the dealer replace plugs and check for codes. one other thing to check is the interactive intake make sure its ajusted correctly if it is none of the above it would prove my theory. i do believe it has to do with that exhaust it chokes that motor up and holds in the hot exhaust vapors i put the d&d pipe on my drag bike and it fires up no problem
Exhaust vapors wouldn't be any hotter than the ambient air in and around the combustion chamber after a couple minutes of not running. I don't think that's the issue.
I'm wondering if you have weak spark which is causing the engine to flood on these hot restarts. What happens when you pin the throttle open and try to start it?
As long as we're guessing... If it's flooding - leaking injector? If there's no fuel - fuel pump pressure? Check Diag Mode and see if you have approx 400 kPa fuel pressure. Is it getting spark? - 1 or 2 folks had incomplete connection at one coil-over.
Like I said, take it to the shop where they have the diagnostic tools. Something's not right with your bike... and it's repeatable.
Buelltech, believe what you like, but I have hard time thinking that if the exhaust was flushed out it would be any cooler in the cumbustion chamber given how hit all the metal would still be.
What is it about the exhaust that makes you think it's the culprit?
I am guessing you have tried every way possible already.
That said. I did notice you turn the key on and wait, but you don't turn on the red on/off switch on until you get ready to start cranking. Turn them both on at the same time, wait for things to cycle and then try it. What does it do then. That's how I always treated my Uly. If I remember correctly, everything wouldn't cycle unless it was all on.
The dealer knows. I showed the 2 service guys and one told me there is nothing I can do right now. I have to wait until they figure out what is wrong, which I think is crap.
When I took it in they did a transmission jet recall and a calibration recall.
I think you're on the right track now. Something is definately wrong. It sounded like it was flooded when it finally started. Don't worry about looking at your watch, just wait until the check engine light goes out, then start it up.
xr 1200 im not talking about heat im talking about vapors un-burnt fuel and the exhaust is all wrong on that bike but we all have different views ny bike runs great now with k&n aircelaner interactive intake disconnected and full exhaust go figure
Eaton...so if its flooding...and its fuel injected...where does one even start to look at parts to replace. Like Zac said above...are the injectors leaking or is the puter not sensing something it should and thereby sending too much fuel to the unit. I don't know, but unless someone can justify this as a being a warranty issue it will get very expensive very fast in terms of trouble shooting.
Eaton - Few people have said to give it 10 seconds. I looked at the watch to show I was giving it time. It still struggles whether I wait until the check engine light goes off or wait a few seconds longer. I'm taking it back tuesday and demanding a solution or another bike. Based on what I have heard here, from other riders, and Harley owners, it ain't right.
Buelltech- still, what about the 1125 exhaust do you think makes it suseptible to this behavior?
And a fuel injected engine can flood if the spark is weak and the plugs get soaked in gas before they fire. Then the injectors will just keep spraying fuel in as long as you crank. A sensor doesn't have to be bad for this to happen. Of course, leaking injectors and other anomolies can cause the same thing. Like Buelltech eluded to, it's hard to diagnose over the 'net.
When it finally started, it really sounded like how a flooded engine behaves to me.
All true. Seems to be good information and genuine attempts to help. A trip to the dealer seems necessary. I have had the same problem, but on rare occasions when I didn't wait for fuel pump to prime and then it started after I turned the switch off and let it cycle through the startup. Hope you get this sorted out and back on the road soon.
xr 1200 you make a good point but weak spark could only come from low batt. or bad plugs because it runds fine once started so it cant be a coil or plug boot.and the bike was turning over fine i said earlier to have plugs changed and i would diconnect interactive intake.when i spoke to tech services about that epa inspired interactive intake he told me to loose it.my bike runs awesome trust me i spent hours on the phone with the men that build these bikes.
sure big silver waste of space under airbox thats linked to your throttle linkage by a cable. this pile of shit nearly caused me to wreck my bike. has anyone here tried to grab a handful of throttle when passing a car and felt a nasty bog then the bike accels really hard well thats the epa trying to kill you
