It sounds plausible but how in the world would this nobody get one of these coins? Plus, why would it be a coin? Every time the government has tried a dollar coin they have been a flop. |

maybe the family collection of confederate money will be worth something again. Time to dump all assets and load up on guns and ammo; the currency of any revolution. |

could it be Obama's top secret future plan to solve Americas border disputes between canada & mexico...? We adopt Canada's medicare program & Mexico's hot latinas, everybody happy I mean, what if america is crossing borders to make the USA bigger, the american dollar would be switched to the amero without too much of a drop in value.... Im no economist, but maybe there is a 'half full' view here thats missing |

You think they wouldnt, hell paper money isnt backed by anything except the notion that it can be used to purchase things and that it has a comparable advantage to foreign capital. All they have to do is say that the money is no longer honored. Its already happened three times in the country's history, fooling yourselves to think that it cant/wont happen again. Maybe not with the Amero, but soon, and for the rest of your portfolio too... |

The US mints do not mint gold coins, gold and silver are not part of this countrys currency.(See Ron Paul for President) It was just a private gold minters idea to raise awarness of "The Problem" and probably help advertise his wares, gold bullion coins with interesting engravings on them. Now for opening the borders between the US and Mexico....how are you going to control the Mexican/central american truck drivers, because they do not follow the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. That means no insurance, no CDLs, no driver training, no drug and alcohol testing, no hours of service regulations and no vehicle safety inspections. We have already seen the aftermath on non-DOT compliant Mexican drivers and border carriers. Remember the bus that burned in evacuating the seniors from the hurrican? But on second thought, after my recent experience with the Homeland SSecurity forces at a ground border crossing maybe they won't be able to get in after all. And Cityslicker is exactly correct, buy things that have value(Buells), not accumulate debt notes to be devalued in the future. |

The US mints do not mint gold coins, gold and silver are not part of this countrys currency As an avid Numismatist i can assert for once, that statement is totally inaccurate. The United States Mints Gold coinage at their West Point Mint. They make Silver coinage at their San Francisco Mint too. Oh,yeah, don't forget, they mint Platinum $100. denomination coins as well.Valid currency.

The coin above IS valid currency. You want to know WHY it isn't USED as currency? Look closely at the "Platinum Bullion" $100 dollar denomination. The face value is $100. But look again,it's made of ONE OUNCE of pure Platinum. Check the Value of an ounce of pure platinum to get the answer. The value is like $1000 per ounce. That is why nobody spends Bullion currency. It's more of an investment.A GREAT one in this economy when the dollar goes worthless (Message edited by ducxl on January 10, 2009) |

Why don't we have the Silver Certificates of old? Why isn't our "Federal Reserve Bank, Inc." debt notes backed up by anything but our governments ability to pay back the "Debt" of the "Debt Note"? What does the government produce to make its obligation to the Federal Reserve Bank, Inc.? If you have the chance to talk to anybody who lived through the Great Depression, ask what happened. Unfortunately not too many of them are around anymore to help us with our history. |

by the same token, a piece of gold is only worth anything because a bunch of people say it is. Think about it - a gold brick isn't good for anything bug a paper weight until someone else wants it. Same goes for paper money. They're worth something because they're scarse (meaning not unlimited - water would be a lousy currency). As long as our govt doesn't just start printing all the money it wants, everything stays in check. |

Gold is a precious and rare metal but there isn't enough of it around to "back up" the currency without significantly inflating it's value. This would cause the cost on products and processes that require gold to rise. I believe the gold in Fort Knox is only worth a few hundred billion dollars. I guess a government could try to manipulate the value, as did Roosevelt but then we wouldn't have gold's value being determined by supply and demand. Imagine that, Ft_Bstd !! |

and a diamond engagement ring is supposed to be two months salary, just try and hock one when it gets tight, talk about your depreciation. Going to the bank on monday to talk about Bullion 100's . That and an overseas Swiss bank account. |

Emeralds are scarcer. Diamonds are basically, worthless but manipulation of supply and demand keeps the value artificially inflated. In some places they litter the ground. Controlled by cartel, they were marketed during the 40's and 50's to American women. Before that time, it was not customary to give a woman a diamond engagement ring. |
