I go for a ride every New Year's Day. Some years, it's a fairly lengthy ride, some years, it might only be a couple of miles if the roads are bad or the temps are very cold.
Yesterday, we got about 8" of snow, then the temps dropped to nearly zero with some fairly strong winds. When I got up this morning, it was 3° F at my house.
I've been following the Mass Tag-O-Rama over on ADV Rider, and the latest tag looked like it was a heliport at a hospital about 25 miles away. With the temps as low as they were and with fresh snow on the roads, I figured only a nut case would be out on his bike, so I stood a pretty good chance of getting the tag.
So I shoveled out the driveway, and bundled up.

The XT started quickly and I let it warm up for about ten minutes, then I set out. It was 10° F (-12° C) I rode down to the Hospital, found the helipad, and my camera wouldn't work. It wouldn't turn on. I tried changing the batteries, but it made no difference. It refused to power up. So I got back on the bike and went home. When I arrived, I checked, and the temperature had risen to 12° F.
It was a record for me. It's the coldest New Year's Day ride I've ever done. The previous record cold ride was in 1997 when it was 14°. That year, I stayed on city streets and didn't do much distance. All told, I went 46.3 miles in some miserably cold weather today.
The camera, a Canon Power Shot A510, is dead. I thought that maybe the cold effected the batteries, but hours later, at room temperature, and with new batteries, it still refuses to power up.
Now I need to find a good, cheap point&shoot to replace it with.
It was a memorable day, even if I couldn't get photos.

Yow! that's cold!

I rode over to Cycle Gear, bought some Frogg Toggs at 25% off. It was in the low 60s here.
