I bought a 05 XB9r with 5k miles a couple months ago. I have only put a couple hundred miles on it so far. Two times after a moderate 3rd gear roll on the bike died completely. I pulled in the clutch, coasted to a stop, waited a minute and restarted it. The second time I noticed the engine light on when I was coasting. Both times were on 20-30 minute rides. Any thoughts?

Another question.

I've had a ton of Japanese bikes. This bike, even with a tiny wheel base is hesitant to tip into corners. Tire pressure is good. What is the preferred front tire?

Lastly.

Do people think these bikes are over sprung from the dealer for a 160lb rider? Mine seems stiff as a board and any rebound/comp adjustment only makes it want to pogo.

Check your battery cables, miking sure they are tight at their connections. If so, look at the wiring harness under the seat. The harness sometimes wears against the seat. And make sure the connections to the ECM are tight, and not corroded. Last, check the fuses and relays for corrosion and being fully seated. Such shut downs are usually caused by one of the above situations.

Tire selection is very much a personal issue. If the tires have much age on them, or miles, it may be time for a change. Especially if the front tire has a triangular shape to it now, instead of a rounded profile.

Go to your owners manual, and look for the suggested settings for your weight. This will give you a known base line to start from. Goodness knows where the previous owner has set them to.

I think the front is a Dunlop Sportmax. It is new but seems to have a flatter profile that I am used to. I think I will go with the Pirelli Diablo Supersport since I ran those on my SV.

I'll check the wiring where you indicated.

I was very happy with Metzler M3 Sportecs on my XB9R.

I have Pirelli Corsa IIIs on Loretta, an 1125R.
6.1k on #1, 7k on #2 Rears, 14.7+k on front.
I need a new front soon...

As was mentioned, check the suspension settings.
These bikes really shine when they're set up correctly.

I once had the misfortune of test riding a 9R that was set up amazingly wrong by the dealers. I don't remember comp/rebound settings but I remember that the rear preload was set up for a 150 lbs rider and the front preload was set up for a 220 lbs rider. The bike steered like a fat pig. It wouldn't turn in at all.

A couple years later I rode a 12R that was set up pretty close for my weight and it was just as nice and agile as my S.
