Because of the cold and barely above freezing temps, I was told by several Badwebbers to put in 5w-40. Problem is, several auto parts stores and Wally World have only 1 oil in 5w-40, and its Mobil 1 Syth for turbo diesels. I bought the gallon jug of it, but my dad stopped me from putting it in. I asked at 2 of the parts stores and they both said it would be fine for the bike, but I don't want to risk damage. I appreciate your thoughts (Message edited by froggy on December 30, 2008) |

Froggy, it'll be fine. I have been running 5W40 in my 12R all summer and it's fine. Someone here ran it in their Uly for quite some time, and had several oil analyses done and it all checked out OK. Too much voodoo surrounding oils. Running a good 20W50 is probably the best for summer, but a 5W40 will not hurt your bike for winter. Check your manual and you'll see that they recommend running a lower number in winter. The first lower number represents viscosity at freezing, so you'll get much better cold viscosity with the mobil1 you bought. Hope this helps. |

My question was mostly about it being diesel oil. I will give it a shot |

According to the 08 FSM: If it is necessary to add oil and HD oil is not available, use an oil certified for diesel engines. Acceptable oil designations include CF-4, CG-4, CH-4, and CI-4. So according to that, you should be good so long as it is marked with one of those designations. |

Luf, that was what i was looking for, but in 5w-40, all anybody had was Mobil 1. Table, yea it says that in the owners manuals too, but I interpreted it as something you use in a pinch. It even says "At the first opportunity, see an authorized dealer to change back to 100 percent Harley-Davidson oil." I wasn't sure if that was meant as a bandage, or a way for HD to con more money out of me! |

Wait you mean the $20 HD tire air is a scam? Last time I let my dealer top off the blinker fluid too! |

Harley (snake) oil, OOPS, did I say that out loud? Crosman made co2 guns and sold 12 gram co2 carts. McDonalds primary business is not burgers. It is real estate. If you buy a franchise they will lease you a corner location. The clown owns corners all over America. Sorry, went to the dealer today. (rode to the dealer today) Wanted to look at the mesh Buell jacket. Didn't see any Buell jacket. Went to look at the Buells and saw a few. Felt like I was in the twilight zone. I was invisible, no one said hi, kiss my xxx, nothing. Weird. Who needs em. |
