I love this bike. 20,000 miles worth just today!  my mantra while riding is "Can't let Zac catch me... Can't let Zac catch me... Can't let Zac catch me"  Ambient Temperature Question: Seems like somewhere on BWB I read that the AT is put on the screen just for rider edification, which works for me. But, WHERE is this sensor at? Part number P0278.1AM on the engine? Seems to me, if the AT is not used by the bike at all, only displayed to the rider, that a second sensor could be purchased, hooked up to the wiring in place of the first, and placed in a spot that would give a more accurate air temperature? Any thoughts or knowledge of this? Thanks, Ray | ||

Part number P0278.1AM is the coolant temp sensor on the engine. Cannot find the part number for the intake air temp sensor (IAT). Looked all through the parts book but no luck. Here is a pic from the Electronic diag manual that shows where the intake Air Temp sensor is at.  Here is one of where the Coolant temp sensor P0278.1AM is. If you're in front, it's on the right side of the snorkel. It sits in a rubber boot. Ray... you had to pull it out of its boot when you did the 12k service! The sensor itself has a protective rectangular ring around it. No worries Ray, miles are growing much slower now. Need a road trip. BTW, Krassh, those are the biggest pix I've seen on BWB. Zack | ||

Two_Buells Page 114 in my parts book is Switches, Sensors & Electrical Connectors and it is not there. Page 120 in my book is the first page of the Hardware List. Is mine an early book missing pages? P0138.K is not even in the New Parts List in the back of the book where you can look up a part number and see what page it is on. Weird Zac Yeah I should have known something was up when they showed partially off the screen even on my 24 inch monitor. Fixed it. Also remember seeing somewhere that Erik Buell could not believe the engineer placed the IAT where he did. True? (Message edited by krassh on December 05, 2008) | ||

Yeah I know but Page 120/121 is Hardware List and New Parts List in mine. The section you are referring to as on Page 120/121 is yours is on 114/115 in mine. And the IAT Sensor is not on the Switches, Sensors & Electrical Connectors in my book. Plus in the back you can look up a part number and see what page it is on and the part number you listed for the IAT does not even exist in my copy of the parts manual. Could there be a supplemental add-on that updates my book? very possible. My book ends on page 134 I assume yours ends on 140 or close? | ||

Zac, oh ya... I remember that IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor now! Just a grommet, no snap to it at all. Thanks Two_Buells and everybody else for clearing up why I couldn't find it in the parts catalog. Next question: Is the IAT information used in fuel mapping? Or some other function? Two_Buells... do you know this answer? If it is not used, it would be fairly simple to move the IAT to become an AT sensor only. Thanks, Ray JDugger!!! 27000 miles!!! Dang!!! Next question: Is the IAT information used in fuel mapping? The AT information is not used in fuel mapping or any other engine management function. Purely for rider information. I asked that question of Erik Buell when he was at an event in CA. So I'd call that a reliable source. | ||

I disagree. There are two correction factors within the 11's ecu that revolve around the IAT's input. | ||

If it was just for rider info why would BMC waste the money on adding that function to the 1125? The 1125 is the only Buell that shows Temps on the gauge. All the older FI Buells had a IAT sensor | ||

From the 1125R Electrical Diagnostic Manual.. 6.17 Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor, DTC P0112, P0113 The ECM supplies and monitors a 5 volt signal applied to one side of the IAT sensor... The ECM monitors this voltage to compensate for various operating conditions... An out of calibration sensor may result in driveability problems... The manual doesn't get very specific, but certainly implies it's not just for the drivers edification. | ||

Has anyone had theirs stick or give false readings? Every once in a while mine (09 CR) will shoot up to 110-116 and stick for a while, in the summer i could maybe see this since im in texas but it has been on pretty cool days 60's or so that i have noticed | ||

Heat soak from radiator exhaust and front primary. Normal for slow riding speeds. It also takes a bit of time for the sensor body to cool back down to actual air temp once you get back up to speed. | ||

My race bike was not started for 2 weeks. As soon as turned the key on the fans started to run?? I noticed the the amb temp was about 105f... this was incorrect. It was not that hot at all. Fan running during start up was erratic after that but the amp temp is NEVER accurate anymore. So yes the IAT is more than just "rider info". Other than fans I had no real running probs from incorrect temp reading... |
