I know we have a lot of weapon enthusiasts on badweb. I have a question: As some of you know I do not live in the best area, and I enjoy a nice evening walk. For years I have carried a compact baton for just in case moments. Thank heaven I have not actually ever needed to use it on someone, only once did I have to extend it to get someone to rethink their aggressive position. Well I misplaced my baton this week. I have been looking everywhere for it, but it is most likely gone. I have thought about replacing it, but I was wondering what my options are with other types of weapons. I DO NOT want to get a gun. I have nothing against them, but I feel in a moment of crisis it is too easy to kill someone (even myself) instead of defusing the situation. So I know switchblades are mostly illegal, so what are my options? |

Tasers? They unfortunately are illegal in NY. |

Nike, New Balance Running away is always to first line of defense, but as someone that was chased down and brutally mugged as a teenager, it doesn't always work... I have looked into taser (and stun guns). Tasers are a expensive to reload, and I do not know of the effectiveness of stun guns. |

Get yourself to a boxing gym to learn the subtle science. Any weapon you carry can be taken from you and used against you. Unfortunately the act of carrying a weapon can also be used as a justification by the attacker if there is litigation - even when you are dead!! Would you be content being bashed about the head with your baton? Most probably not so improve your chances by arming yourself with what you already have. Also, perhaps you should move to somewhere else if you cannot walk about freely. |

lol at bombardier. I wouldnt even take up boxing. The criminal will most likely have mind control devices that will make you box yourself. but seriously, move away from the zoo. You could also consider stun or spray devices. |

Living here in the "zoo" is really no different than any other city. We have our share of crack heads and home g's. If I do move it will be to another city, so I will still have the same protection needs. Bombardier, I am only looking to get someone to rethink their plan, not win a bar fight. Most of the crackheads/home g's are looking for a crime of opportunity. I have found the sight/sound of a baton is sort of like a shot gun. It is the sound of it extending it that diffuses the situation, not the act of using it. I guess I need to start looking for a replacement asp. |

Maybe get a cop's input. I mean just ask one that you see around. If you were to get caught with some of the items discussed, you might find yourself in trouble with the law. Items such as knuckles, knives with more than a specified blade length can cause you some grief. Maybe augment a legal close range weapon with a legal remote control one too. Be safe and hey, if you see a skinny dude riding around on a blue City, don't club or shock him. |

check the pawn shops, I know they carry them. The one on Pike had them when I needed one. Also viscous psycho criminal cases are not easily deterred. Stay out of the alleys, away from the Central district, out of crack park and it increases your likely hood of not running into the creeps at all. Barring that, I know of a nice big house across the water from you that is up for sale. (nudge nudge) Honestly, I never go into Seattle without packing. Crime there is one of the reasons I moved here. |

Cowboy is right. Get yourself a dog. I live in an area that is just outside some shaty parts and every night before work (10pm) I walk the dog. I have never had a problem with my 4 year old Black Lab. One thing that shocked me as I moved to a big city and then got a dog is that the majority of people that I encounter on the street are deathly afraid of dogs (mainly african americans). I don't get it, I figure this fear comes from pits and other aggressive dogs that they've encountered or have heard horror stories about. It works for me though. |

I know Taser cartridges are expensive to replace, but it is seriously the best none gun weapon you can buy. I have been tasered at work and it is an experience I never want to go through again. Taser the company will also replace your Taser for Free if it is deployed for your safety and you then flee the scene. The idea behind the civilian model is to deploy and run, leaving the whole device behind. Another positive note on the Taser brand tasers is that they have little ID markers that come out when the taser is deployed. So if you had to deploy the taser because you were attacked the police would have a way of ID'ing your attacker. I'm not sure about the civilian model taser, but with the police issue we have the option to take the cartridge off and use it to drive stun. One thing to remember with Taser is that if deployed correctly it completely incapcitates your target. With a stun gun or other like device it is only pain compliance. Taser is one tool that they have given us on the job that I really appreciate. Most people that I have drawn my Taser on have completed complied with out deployment. |

So if you had to deploy the taser because you were attacked the police would have a way of ID'ing your attacker. Not if he/she removed the darts. The microdots that are deployed and left behind dont attach to the person Tased. Taser works great if the darts actually penetrated the target (bulky clothing and you can forget about it working, even with the longer "winter" darts) and drive stunning is for use in very close proximity and not a good idea for defensive purposes. Get a new baton ( which has worked for you already) and a good can of O.C. and call it a day. |

Situational awareness. Being aware of your surroundings and assessing threats before it's too late will keep you from becoming a victim. Pretty much it's the same thing that keeps you safe when you are riding.

This was most likely due to you not presenting yourself as an easy target. Carrying your baton probably gave you a sense of confidence that others could pick up on. If you feel like you absolutely must have another ASP to feel safe, PM me. I can hook you up with one. |

So I know switchblades are mostly illegal They make knives that deploy almost as fast as a switchblade, but are legal. I forgot what they're called. Any weapon you do get make sure you know how to use it, and practice. Asp are illegal in many states to carry. I live in Cali so everything is illegal... |

I cannot fathom living by choice in an area where I wouldn't feel secure walking the neighborhood at any time of day or night. That said, if you choose to live in a threatening/risky neighborhood, pepper spray would be my first choice, the stuff that also includes UV dye-marker. |

If it ever went to the Supreme Court, I'd expect that any law prohibiting civilian possession of a taser would be found in blatant violation of the second amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America, "...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." |

Hapkido learn at least the white belt it will give you a good idea of what to do if approached. I live in Baltimore city, I would love to support the local shops in my area, but for my safety I don't, nor do I walk around at night in my neighborhood. If I did I would have a 360 degree awareness and make eye contact with whoever approaches. Or be aware of their presence. The people who don't pay attention are the ones who get mugged. I took Hapkido and Aiki Jitsiu a while ago from an excellent teacher. K |

I know this guy who bought my friends pistol, The same one i have. And he accidentally shot himself in the leg on freeway trying to unload it??? And has been in rehab for 1 yr now. Every time a bone fragment works its way out of the muscle they have to cut his leg and pull it out. I would never shoot unless i had to and i never brandish my arms or threaten with them they are secret and only if necessary. |

It's a sad day to have come to this but it has done so. Get the training, knowledge and confidence you need to carry your PISTOL. If it were possible to know, you might find that a lot of folks all around you are carrying theirs. Think about that while you hold your baton or pepper spray... An armed citizen is the policeman's best friend. |

Get a pet boa constrictor and carry it around your neck. 99% of the people who are going to attack you are looking to get something from you, and don't typically intend to hurt you. Perhaps something as simple as carrying a dummy wallet is with while? |

I have a dummy wallet with a Beretta .25 ACP in it. pistol is operational with out removing it. If you aint shooting, Ya oughta be reloading. If you're not reloading, You'd better be moving. Cause if your not moving, someone's gonna come along and put your head on a stick. Seriously: go with what you know, and take a class from a Pro. so you will know more. i have a baton. love it. have a pistol too. different devices for different situations. the good about a baton is, i can show it and not go to jail, on the other hand i cant brandish the pistol. i agree with eboos. the way you present your self is huge. dont look weak, ie an easy "mark". i agree with barbied too. know your surroundings, dont go where you are not comfortable. i always use my gut feeling. always look people in the eye, and be alert. if i were you id buy a gun and replace the missing baton. spend some money on classes at a range. learn to use the gun well. |

When I was in the required class to get my carry permit back in 96, I was amazed by the total stupidity and cowboy attitude I saw in my class mates. To me, they represented the squids of gun ownership. I had long since let my permit expire. Honestly, I have mixed feelings on carrying a firearm for protection. If you would have asked me a few years ago, I would have felt differently. The long and the short of it is, only you can make the choice for you, and if you do choose to carry a firearm, don't take the responsibility lightly. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you would have to pull it out, you had better make sure that you were in the right, and that you were prepared to skillfully use it. This message was not intended for any certain person. It was only a blanket statement of my feelings. |

Thanks for the interesting comments. I want to follow up on a few. Dog? = I would love to have a dog, but it would be cruel to have a dog downtown. I live in 426sq ft (wall to wall luxury), and the building has a firm no pets rule. Spray? = I have seen one too many crackheads sprayed by the fuzz. It doesn't seem to effect them. Moving? = I am surrounded by multimillion $ condos. Right in the heart of shopping district. I like the convenience of living here. But just like any city all the undesirable folk congregate downtown. Most are nothing but an irritant, but you always end up with someone desperate, or trying to prove something. Gun? = Yes that is the ultimate answer, but I live in Seattle. This is not Texas, concealed weapons are not encouraged. Mudbug will back my up on this, if you have to shoot, you better not stick around for the cops. You will be crucified by the fuzz, and the local media. I am in the process of replacing my baton, but I haven't found something of quality. Can any of our LEO's recommend a brand? Everything seem to be Chinese junk. |
