I'm new here and tend to be a lurker on most of the boards I belong to. I have seen two other boards have problems because of moderation or lack of moderation. On one board, a political discussion became heated enough that several members left the board. One of the guys who left was as knowledgable on the subject matter as Court is on Buells. Imagine Court not posting anymore because he got in trouble at work due the associations thread. It would be a terrible loss of knowledge here. The other board was a sailing group. Some members enjoyed sailing nude and posted pictures which caused a fracture of the board. It actually split into two new boards plus the original is still there. Sadly, none of the three parts are as great as the whole used to be. It would be sad to see that happen here. For the record, I like guns and nude women but nude women with guns frighten me (worse would be for a nude woman's husband to have the gun) Just kidding. |

>>>>Some members enjoyed sailing nude Dude . . . got photos? I said I didn't want to risk the job of a lifetime unnecessarily . . . I'd foolishly ignored the nude women sailing scenario . . . for that I'd be willing to loose several large a year. K i i i i d d d d d d d i i n n g g . . . . thanks for the comments. Badweb will continue to be a fun place, plum chucked full of information, opinion and news that anyone from the family can share. Merry Christmas to all . . . . off to church. |

Down with the nit-pickers! Don't like it, don't click it. Froggy hit the nail on the head. Go for a ride. |

I'm jumping into this thread in the middle, but I've never let that stop me before. Over the years I've come to realize what a great difference the style of moderation does for the "personality" of a group like this. There are balances between being so sterile that it doesn't feel like a community, and so open that it becomes a zoo. Many people are on http://advrider.com as well as this site. They are both good sites, with some excellent people. However, I think most would agree that the feel of them is very different. Part of that is due to the fact that ADV has more members. Part of it is due to the things that are allowed in ADVs JM section, which is sort of like Badwebs Quick & Backfire boards. It can be fun to go into JM and argue about politics, start yet another thread on Anal Sex, or request pictures of someone's wife's boobs. It gives the place a much different flavor from Badweb. Right now, in the Big Bad & Dirty section of badweb, Dr. Greg has a few threads going about the Saga of his Ulysses, from engine tear down, to deer collision, to new bike. Dr. Greg is also on ADV, and I noted that he wasn't posted anything about all this over there. His response was that it would simply degenerate into an argument if he did. When I rode cross country, I cross posted from the road on ADV and here. It was well received in both places, but the "I'm part of a family" feel was much greater here. I've nothing against ADV. I'm an active participant over there. I've stayed in people's houses I've met from that site. There are a lot of good people. And when I want to get rowdy, that's where I go. If I needed to bare my soul, I'd do it on Badweb. When I first started riding, I was preparing for a trip across the state to chaperon a field trip with my daughter's school. I wondered, "what do I do if the Cyclone breaks?" I posted that question in the Carolina Corner Carvers section, and m2nc, who I'd never met posted back "If you have problems, call my wife, she will come get you." Complete with his wife's cell number. There are very few places on the internet where people are comfortable handing out their wife's cell number to strangers. The reason that happens here is because of the tone Blake and the other moderators have created. I'm sure it's a difficult and thankless job. I do appreciate what it's given us though. |

Merry Christmas Jim! It is because of the community of this place that we had the pleasure of meeting you on your crazy trek across the country. I don't think I would have responded if it was an ADV Anal Sex thread.

If I needed to bare my soul, I'd do it on Badweb. "If you have problems, call my wife, she will come get you." Jim - I would have been glad to come and get you should you have called. I'm glad to call you my friend. I don't know many other boards that would have pulled off some of the things that BadWebbers have. The coordination and relay to get a rescued dog from New Mexico to Iowa for Daves and Kandie. That was a great thread to follow and there were so many people that made it possible. Now Taos is living a very spoiled life in Iowa and goes to the office each day with Dave. Pay It Forward - it's been happening on BadWeB for years, but now we have an on-going effort to help put new riders in gear and help riders who have been down with spare parts we might have in our garages/barns. BRAN - Countless people willing to offer up their services to any Bueller in need and expect nothing in return. I think my most proud time of BadWeB was the Matt Ware fundraiser. BadWebbers came together for a young man dying of brain cancer and raised just over $11,000 in a month. Mind you, this was a young man we didn't know, but was the best friend of a BadWebber. There were several of us working behind the scenes trying to coordinate this major fundraiser. A year later, most of the parties involved met for the first time face to face in Franklin NC while honoring another BadWebber's father who had been killed years prior. That is a trip I would have moved mountains to make. I told M2nc I was going, with or without him and the children! These things are what keeps so many people here on BadWeB. As it's been said before, you may come here because of the bike you ride, but you will stay because of the people here. The software may be dated, the rules you may feel are a little heavy handed at times, but there's no other place I'd rather hang my hat.

It does the soul good to see such selflessness alive and well on the NET. (Message edited by Bombardier on December 28, 2008) |
