I wonder if it has anything to do with the odd warning light problem I reported here about a month ago. After starting the bike in nearly freezing temperatures, the Low Fuel AND Check Engine Light will come on together and stay on until the bike warms up. From everyone who participated in that thread, it affected anyone who had the '09 instrument cluster, either as original equipment, or a replacement on an '08 model. |

From the TT Bpt referred to, the IC is looking for a voltage range now, instead of a threshold. The low fuel light is supposed to set when it exceed one end of the range, but now sets, with a DTC on the other end. It's 16 degrees here now, surely the garage is around 30. I'll try and hook my Fluke to the pins referred to in the TT and see what the voltage is doing as Loretta warms up. Z |

Wait, I'm feeling lost since we have two discussions here. What addresses what? The tech tip addresses the instrument cluster, yes? Have we totally strayed from the "fourth flash", or are the two somehow related? |

The tech tip addresses IC produced between Oct 29, 2007 and May 16, 2008. There is a software issue that can keep the security system "awake." Parasitic draw during key-off situations may require IC replacement. Software versions affected are pre 5.1.1 (ie 4.1, 4.2, etc.). 5.1.1. should not be replaced. Software version can be found on the rear of the IC on early models or vis ODIS on later models. |

hhhhhmmmmmmmmm sounds like what I had reported way back when....and shortly after that was the first re-flash that was available right after my ECM had been shipped back to BMC, looked at and maybe replaced by BMC makes you go hhhhmmmmmm wonder if I need to take mine in again....I had also posted about the fuel light acting weird during some of my riding |

With the "Tech Tip #396" in hand, and some in person cheerleading, my dealer was able to find it. (Thank You!) Hopefully we will get to the root of my charging problem now... ( Also seems I had a bad AT sensor, hopefully this will cure my bikes troubles...) Waiting on parts... |

The Tech Tip referred to a resistance range of 850-1400 ohms. At ambient of 29 dF, mine read 2200 ohms. Not sure of the reading when the LF and CEL came on. If you pull the plug to check, it kills the fuel pump. I tried hanging jumpers out of the connector and watching the voltage drop, expecting a voltage divider, but it stayed relatively constant. The lights stayed on until CT got to around 165. I killed the engine and pulled the plug... ~ 1500 ohms. Not sure if the sensor is wack or if I'm just riding in too cold of a climate. I know more than I did yesterday tho. I will be low on fuel soon, when the LF lights then, I'll check the resistance. I expect it on the other end of the range, maybe 8-900 ohms. Zack |

Loretta hit reserve yesterday, so the LF light is on for real now. I just got my tuning s/w yesterday also, I'll be in the garage with the heater running while my wife cooks Christmas Dinner. I'll have some resistance numbers later today. Z |

Well, with the bike actually in a low fuel situation, the voltage across pins A & D does change. When I started from an AT of 40 dF, I saw a wide range. Started out at a little less than batt voltage(~12.2V), LF and CEL lit. Very soon both lights went out(7-8V), a short wait and the LF came back on(~4V). The thermistor must be fairly small and heated, the resistance changes rapidly without fuel around it. Gotta go get some more propane, some gas and a furnace blower motor. More later Z |

I filled a couple of gas-cans while in town. The voltage across pins A & D, the outside 2 of 4 inline pins, was 5.16 volts and fairly steady. As I poured in the gas, it held steady until it hit the sensor. Voltage very quickly changed to 11.3 volts and stayed steady. Battery voltage was 12.73. After shutting off the ign, the voltage stays for 5 minutes, then goes to zero. It's nice having a furnace again, too. Z |

Don't know about my situation. Since the sensor is a thermistor, I may just be out of range due to ambient temp. Not causing any real problems, just annoying. The garage is cold, near freezing and the sensor showed 2250 ohms. Well above the 850 - 1400 ohm range spec'd. Will confer with the techs over the next couple of days. Gotta go to work. Z |

What did you find out from the techs Zack? I'm still having the same issue and would like to have more info about your situation before talking with my servicing dealer to give them some possible leads. |

I got shrugs. One tech said it was telling me it's too cold to ride, with a big grin. It would be cool if someone with an early 08 would check pins A-D resistance and see if it triggers only on a threshold(low end) and ignores the high end. We may have one that fits that... I'll check. I think it could be fixed very easily in software by enlarging the "good range" of resistance from 850-1400 ohms up to 5-10k ohms. That would fix the "false alarms" but still trigger the CEL if the circuit opens... For now, I live with it. Z |

One new AT sensor and IC (and 4 1/2 weeks!) later, I have my bike back. SO FAR (2 days and 100 miles) it seems to have cured ALL my bikes troubles. Charging, rough running and power loss troubles, etc. are now and will hopefully STAY a thing of the past... My gal seems to run better than she ever has... (knock on wood!) |

And a big shout out and THANK YOU to Bpt for posting the info about tech tip #396, which enabled me to help my dealer get my bike fixed... The new cluster rocks, it has a cool gear indicator, and shows system voltage, too, allowing me to keep an eye on it when I run my electric gear and my high beams (so far, it seems able to handle all of it, I think that the cluster issue was the real problem, and the charging system seems up to the task, now) |
