Please pardon my ignorance, but what is this for? It is a loop of plastic coated wire in a figure 8 attached to the bottom of my '08 1125R passenger pillion. My guess is that it can be used for securing/ locking items to the bike. I can't believe I haven't noticed it before. | ||

I thought it was for hanging the pillion on coat racks when visiting friends... as you pass through the front door your friend says, "May I take your pillion?" Happens all the time... That, or maybe separating the seat from the plastic outer cover... gives you something to pull on... my best guess... | ||

I just tried putting my helmet strap through the wire loop. It is pretty clumsy and difficult to put the seat back on the bike, and I think I could steal the helmet intact. Maybe I'm still missing something. NOW the photo of the HOOK used for securing the helmet is very helpful. That makes a lot of sense. I wish I had seen that 11000 miles ago! | ||

Two_buells: interesting... I thought that was just a ground terminal... that's where I connect my battery tender to... typically do not want to connect to the battery negative terminal directly when charging it (reduces chance of sparking right over the battery). That really is brilliant. Seen it, didn't get what it was for. With my luck, probably in the owners manual. HA! Whenever I go in somewhere, I just hang my lid on the right side passenger peg. I would love to come out and find some punk messing with it. Maybe it's baiting, but WTH. Rob | ||

I just searched the online owner's manual, and can't find mention of the hook or the wire loop. I sure figured that I must have skipped it when I "read" the owner's manual. I've been looking at some other threads, and it seems that the wire loop is only supposed to be connected to the bike on one end. The loose end goes through the helmet's D ring, then over the post that locks the pillion to the bike. Both ends of mine are bolted to the bottom of the pillion. | ||

Bobup, you may not be following correctly. There is a wire loop on the BOTTOM of the passenger pillion (not accessible by a passenger who is riding the bike). | ||

i think i remember that in the parts book with the tool kit. i thought it could be used for securing the passenger helmet to the hook with the rider helmet but have never tried. i don't know why it would be hooked to the bottom of the pillion. tim | ||

This thread is useless without pics. The helmet "hook" is a really nice feature. I wish it hadn't interferred with my hard bag mounting - I had to break it off so they would fit. | ||

Eweaver I know EXACTLY what "wire" we are talking about in this thread....it is on the UNDERSIDE of the pillion seat...going from screw to screw....I was being SARCASTIC like others were being I saw it the first time I pulled the seat off many months ago, and wondered Why it was there when the "clip" is right there. I have one of these wires in my XB9SX's tool kit and have yet to use the dang thing. | ||

I have used the figure 8 loop many a time for helmet and backpack security...not too secure, but at least they can't just walk off with the stuff. I have never tried just putting the D-ring around the metal hook. Does the pillion have any trouble sliding back on? | ||

the metal hook inside works great for a helmet. Haven't yet tried connecting up two helmets though. It kinda makes you realize how sloppy of a fit the pillion is. (it's fine...just saying) | ||

If it is a garrote, I guess having it bolted down is a good idea. It gives you time to think about it as you unbolt it, serving as a "cooling off" period. | ||

edumacated guess.... It's there so you can hang it on the bike (helmet hook) while accessing the tools, and working on your bike. At least that's what I'd use it for. Nothing like setting down your pillion on the ground then accidentally stepping on it or kicking it out into traffic  | ||

Cmonkey, seems like the pillion would scratch the body work if hung by so... I would hang it off a footpeg instead, but I like your basic idea. | ||

my XB had the same figure 8 loop and it was neatly tucked away in the tool kit. I would have to say that it's for securing items. Not sure why Buell decided to attach it to the pillion though. | ||
