Looking to install SE H-D HIGH PERFORMANCE EVOLUTION XL CAM KIT OEM 25647-91A into my 2001/02 X1. I understand I need to change the pinion gear when using this kit on a 00 & later XL models require the installation of a '99 & earlier pinion gear. Can anyone offer advice and part number on this item. Thanks |

The only one available new anymore are the S&S pinion gears. I would suggest you get a yellow one. they run about $110. You cannot buy them direct so you need to find either an S&S or drag specialties dealer to get you one. |

If you buy a set of cams from Harley-Davidson you get a matched cam drive gear ... Otherwise you stand the chance of the after market cams(due to OEM cam drive gear) being too tight(gear whine) or too loose(cam noise) ... Of course there is the process of checking the cam drive gear for proper spec's. which some one will have to learn or have some that knows how to do this, do it for you ... Of which there are 6 PINION GEAR(cam drive) listed for my 1997 S3T ... |

Aaron helped me through some of this when I found a damaged cam on my M2. The 1999 and 2000 M2 cams were the same cam, but that crank gear changed in 2000. So 3 of the 4 cams are the same in 1999 and 2000, and I think the crank gear can be pressed on and off that last cam in a pinch. These cams are all color coded, as they were sized a little differently based on how your case ended up (variance from tolerance stack I am assuming). The matched your cams to the case (and to each other). The X1 cams were a different tooth cut. High contact area or something, they had some name for it. On the up side, you no longer needed different cams for different cases. On the down side, the new cut was a lot noiser. I think in 2001 or something, everything went to the new "sizeless" cam gear cut. FWIW... This is all from memory, so if you have any real questions, call somebody who actually knows |

Buellistic, That is false information. You DO NOT get a new pinion gear when you buy new cams from HD. HD no longer sells the course pitch pinion gears, they are obsolete. Whitey, Do you already have those cams? I ask because SE does make that same cam for the 01 and up models. Just change the -91 to a -01 on the end of the part number. |
