I think everyone in American, legal or not, should at least be provided an education sufficient that they can spell and use punctuation in their language of choice. ONLY, if they are putting back into the system. Taxes... Oh, wait, they dont pay taxes.....No sympathy... Chase |

"And 4cammer's guns. If guns in the hand of the citizenry create a safer society, the U.S. should be the safest country in the world. I agree on the tax/education costs. It costs over 100k easily to educate a child through the public system.... You can't tell me that non-taxpayers should be allowed this loophole anymore..... I've started a petition to submit to my Congressman and every major TV network to reject this right.... My sister is a teacher in Lakeland, FL. Last year, there were 9000 teaching jobs cut. No temps, no substitute. Full time teachers. Tell me that some of those jobs wouldn't be salvaged by cutting out thousands of illegal immigrants from that county's school system. And yes, there are thousands just in that county. I talked to my sister last night, and she is worried that she might be in jeopardy next year with more cuts in process. And she's "only" been a teacher for 5 years. My sister has paid in over 120k in education through Florida Southern College, one of the premier music education colleges in the US, and now she risks losing her job with cuts like illegal students not even being considered. If you want to kill a weed, you have to find and destroy its roots. Welfare, education, income, benefits. You take these roots away, illegals will wither down to at least a more manageable level for the negative impact on our society. If anyone is interested in signing my petition and handing it on to be signed via email etc. let me know with a PM or here on this board..... Matt |

Three cheers Matt! I will say it again for those who didn't get it, they are not our poor and indigent they are the cast-offs of another DEPLETED country. I have been there I know what the leaders have done to that populations infrastructure, and I'm sorry for them. This is not personal, this is self preservation. I also know MANY of these cast-offs, and yes they are some nice people, that dosen't change the fact that they are criminals, breaking the law every day! Chase is feeling the reality of the situation firsthand, we should all be able to see how this is a real problem, NOW for all of us, and it's not all about a language barrier, that's just an irritant. Our leaders don't care because these are voters! Yes they get to cast a vote! And this country just got done getting the vote for it's own women and blacks,WHAT THE F***! |

Socialism: A policy that makes people who behave responsibly forced to pay for those people who don't. And as long as you're a responsible person, I don't care WHAT language you speak, how you dress or culture you have. So yea, Socialism sucks big time, no matter how it is hidden... |

i'm part with you guys and part indignant of what i read here! i'm italian, i came here to the US about 4 years ago, i had $700 in my pocket. i didn't speak english, i had no papers to work (of course), no money to rent a place. many of you don't even know what does it mean have no money to eat. immigrants do. i came here with so many dreams. i started to work in a dirty cuban restaurant in downtown Miami. i made 50-60 bucks a day. i was happy, the first money i made. those few money gave me the opportunity to rent a modest small apartment, where i ate and slept on the floor for over a month because i didn't have money to buy furniture. but i was happy. then i could buy a bed, a table with chairs, a small couch, all bought in a thrift shop, because i def didn't have money to buy new. but i was happy, even happier than i was before. then i met my ex wife, she was american, she helped me. we got married and after struggling for my papers, i finally made my dream true! i got that infamous green card, and you don't have any idea how surprised i was when i realized that was not green, but kinda pink! lol i spent so much money for the government, immigration, lawyers! just to have a normal life, just to have the rights to live as a human being, as an american! i worked hard, when i finally got my papers, so many opportunities came up to me. now i work for one of the biggest company in the US of night clubs (they own 9 of them between Miami, New York, Las Vegas), i'm a consultant for Hennessy, Moet and Grand Marnier (i'm a bartender-mixologist). i'm successful in my job... but just 3 years ago i was making 50-60 dollars a day. but i was happy, humble. i've always been paid taxes because to work, i needed a "mickey mouse" SS# and so i paid taxes but never got a dime back from the government at the end of the year! working in the food and beverage, i can assure you illegals are essential. i'm thinking about sweepers, bussers, dish washers. clubs and restaurants live on them, so they can have the job done underpaying those people. i bet no americans would do those jobs! the whole US economy is based on those illegals to keep certain costs in budget. i struggled a lot, i ate in the supermarkets and threw the boxes under the cabinets to not being caught! do not judge anybody if you first don't put yourself on his same shoes! i'm 35, i'm not a kid, and i'm a proud immigrant! |

The cost of private education on average is half of what public education costs. I believe that illegal immigrants should elect to send their children to private schools, or teach their children at home until they get their paperwork. As a country, I feel we should take necessary precautions to eliminate the money spent on migrant workers and immigrants that are not here to stay, but just here to get a lump of money and leave. Immigration isn't illegal, ducking out on taxes is. There are plenty of ways to get the legality of being an immigrant established. Work visas, visas, green cards, etc. etc. I know how you feel about taxes. I get back nearly nothing. Last year I got 58 dollars back! This year will see less! I'll be paying in, I'm guessing. And by paying income taxes, you are not in this category, since you must have had paperwork saying the US knew you were here. Taxes paid in=Public education! |

Italian I do not think you are in the same group as the ones being discussed here. You are here trying to contribute to the country by doing things that made you legal and you pay taxes in turn you are contributing to the country instead of putting a stain on it like the ones we are all talking about. |

The italian job, First the comments are aimed at Illeagal [ not lawful ] folks who come here, and consume tax money and services that LEGAL imigrants (You) and residents(Me) pay for, violate labor laws, and send their money out of the us. Second if you were miss treated by any civil servant while trying to go through the legal process, My apologies, that has to suck, A guy that lived upstairs from me a couple of years back was trying to get his papers in order ( he was from hati ) I listended to his frustration time after time being run around by the INS. He was a Legal Exchange student here at UNCW, he worked 2 jobs and attended school full time His goal was to become a doctor and return to hati to help his people. MY heart goes out to the Cubans that come here looking for freedom, I have worked with many of them at a lumber plant in Miami, They risk Life and limb fleeing oppression To me they are welcome, most that I encountered were attempting to learn english, the stories are much like yours, One of my favorites Angel [ Pronounced An-hel ] was sent to the cuban Gulag for 10 days for expressing a dis like for a government poloicy, 2 weeks after he got out fearing for his life, he took boat ride on a rickety boat 90 miles to the Keys, He risked his life to get here fleeing a tyrant, and like many Cubans left family there. He has my respect and admiration He hopes to some day bring his daughter and possibley his wife here The ILLEGAL mexicans which is what the comments are about, have staged rallies, }broken the law and while they are "cheap" labour, most are a drag on OUR country, You have every right to be proud! If it means any thing to you, You have my respect. |

i can assure you illegals are essential. i'm thinking about sweepers, bussers, dish washers. clubs and restaurants live on them, so they can have the job done underpaying those people. i bet no americans would do those jobs! I've done nearly all of the jobs that the illegals are doing. I've been a sweeper-boy in a barber shop, bus-boy in a restaurant, McDonalds counter-boy, dish-washer, security guard in a downtown Mpls. hotel, security guard at a wastewater treatment plant, short-order cook.... I did everything I could to pay for my college education because my parents couldn't. Now I'm working 3 jobs trying to get my kids into college. We have lots of teenagers out of work and lots of work for illegals. Is it because someone, perhaps, feels too important to do low-paying, hard work while others are just happy to have it? |

i bet no americans would do those jobs! This line always pisses me off! If I needed to, you bet your ass I would! And I know a lot of homeless or poor or struggling students who would die for that job as well. I have many views on illegal immigration, none of which are going to solve anything.. Except maybe for one.. Pretty much every time I read one of these threads about illegal aliens one topic always stands out. That is, how illegal aliens are using services that are paid for by tax payers, while not actually paying taxes themselves. Well, there IS a solution to that problem... It is called the fair tax act (www.fairtax.org). If the fair tax is enacted.. EVERYONE will be paying taxes.. Citizens, visitors, immigrants (illegal or otherwise). The reality of the situation is this: Illegal aliens will always be here, they will always have access to services. There is absolutely no way to stop it. However, there are ways to deal with certain aspects of the situation to make them less of a drag on services/society. The fair tax act is one of these ways. This thread popped up and I read it but didn't comment... until now. 1. The US has not adopted English as its official language. We use it de facto - that is commonly used, but not mandated. Until we do adopt it as the official language we should try to be tolerant. 2. How can any one of us differentiate an undocumented alien from one who is here legitimately? In most business transactions that I'm involved in all I'm ever asked for is my $ or my credit card. (My credit card is signed "check id" but the clerks rarely -if ever- check it.) 3. As for the drain on the system - why just go after undocumented aliens? Why not our own shiftless and lazy people who exploit the system? For what it is worth, I am a teacher who was laid off last month. We in Florida are not allowed to ask if a student who comes to the public school system is documented or not. I have had students of all nationalities who all say they came here for a better life. |

The moment there are real penalties for hiring illegal aliens the practice will stop. No fence can do that. To date the government has proven as effective as they have at slowing drugs coming into the United States. There are some things that governments just don't do well. I suggest that LEGAL immigrants are perhaps the most hurt by ILLEGAL aliens. I'm a huge fan of the "toss their ass out and seize the assets of the business that hired them". But then . . . I've been much more successful than the government in a number of things I've done. Court |

Australia is the only place where English is spoken. Didn't England use Australia as a prison colony in the old day, flushing there toilets by deporting their worst prisoners out the the country? Basically the same thing, on the guise of religious freedom, England did to the US of A. I am sure the aboriginal people there feel the same way as many of us and the indians (native American). The Inca, Aztec (native, partly, to is Mexico today, when the Spanish invaded that area. I do agree the illegals are raping the welfare system, crossing the border to pop out babies for the health care, getting food stamps etc. Like the late, great William F. Buckley once said in an interview referencing his speech patterns, "It's english, ain't it". (Message edited by BCordb3 on December 08, 2008) |

LOL and again, unless i'm talking with an indian-american, don't forget that all of us here, are immigrant! and anyway, what i said before wasn't referred to everybody, but a good number of americans. i'm sure there's somebody available on doing every kind of job, i also gotta say that Miami is a particular city, too many "prince and princess" around, if you can understand me... anyway, God bless this country, adoptive mother of lots of people with dreams. |

I have limited offshore experiences, but I have actually been overseas. Many countries will accept our American dollars as payment for goods, and when you pull that dollar out - they speak to you (in my experience) in English. This to me is tantamount to the power of the American dollar (well it was at one time - you can argue the current economy if you must). It was notable that they make the effort to speak English as a second, or third, or so on, language. I find it rather sad, that right here, in the land and home of the dollar, that this attitude is completely non-existent. |

English is widely spoken throughout the world. You can thank the Brits for that. In India, it is the official language. Indians speak different languages in different parts of the country, English is a common language that allows them to communicate with each other. English has also picked up many words from India. There's a great show on the History Channel called "The History of English". It's quite informative. Any language buffs out there would find it interesting. |

English is widely spoken throughout the world. And I hope you did not think I infer any exclusivity to our use of it. English is a common language that allows them to communicate with each other. 'cept here, lately. Which is was I was getting at. (Message edited by midknyte on December 08, 2008) |
