I looked and tried to find the FatRod, but all I could find was the RoadRod. About that RoadRod? My mother always told me that if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all...... (followed by silence) Bill |

I think, if I end up back in texas, I would probably be willing to sell the X1, and buy a XR... I REALLY REALLY like... Chase |

Bill, you're killin' me here! i thought we had this conversation before!! AHHH! But I have ridden very recent HD products, and they do not have "modern levels of performance." Though I will have to admit that my experience stops at the 2007 model year. They have perfectly fine performance for what they do. They just don't have the HP that a modern sport motorcycle needs to interest a young audience. The one model they do have with 100% modern technology doesn't have the traditional styling. I want them to give that a shot! I want an XL1125R with a peanut tank and a solo seat damn it! And I want it right f*****g now! And City? I loved my '05 883/1200. I should never have sold it, but when I rode with my young squid friends, I couldn't hang with them in a lot of situations. I want Harley, not just Buell, to make a bike that does. And Jerry? My best friend and I have had the same arguments for 25 years! It never gets old!Keep this site going and we will undoubtedly have this conversation again! Bill |

My favorite salesman at my local dealer called me yesterday and asked me if I wanted to preorder an XR1200. He said he thought of me immediately. (Could that be because he sold me three Buells since 2000?) I think it is a cool looking bike, but for the money, you could find a lot more performance. That being said, they will probably sell a bunch of them, (I hope) based on what they look like. Anybody heard what they might sell for? -michael (Message edited by roadrash1 on December 05, 2008) |

"Ours is gone, ended up being 15200 otd with parts and gear" WOW! I guess that's what I'm talking about. Maybe people are buying them as a collectable model or something? It just seems to be a lot of money. (Well, it is to me.LOL!) -michael |

$10,795 for black, plus freight and set up. TO get to 15200 Cityx has probably added accessories that most likely many here would not put on a Buell so that is not a fair comparison. We've pre-sold four already. ~jammer |

Damn you jammer, we only got the one. I am now going to go pout in a corner somewherez. Yes we added pipes, grips, levers, luggage rack, tail bag, side bags, analoge speedo , and a set of pirellis. Jacket and helmet, it all adds up quick in the HD world. |

Bill, i see your point, and knew from our earlier conversations where you were coming from, but i still couldn't let your comments go without a rebuttal. i agree that the air-cooled Harley line doesn't make the HP of modern-day sportbikes (nothing makes the HP of modern-day sportbikes except modern-day sportbikes), but i think we both agree that Harleys make "modern levels of performance." as a plus, the aftermarket for Harley is vast, and more power is easily attainable - no, not necessarily "sportbike" power, but *real* power nonetheless. i've said several times on several threads lately how savvy H-D has been since their buyout from AMF in the early 80's to bring their machines up to world-class levels without losing the legendary Harley-Davidson mystique and charisma in the process, and with the new, vastly improved touring platform for '09 this is more true than ever. besides, when you hold your own against a well-ridden sportbike on a "big, slow, heavy, unsophisticated, under-powered slug" like my Road King, it's right up there with sex. :-) |

Modern levels of performance! I see the new Kaw 600 makes 120 hp. That is about 10% of a NASCAR motor size and they don't make 10X the Kaw's HP. But yet the Kaw is quiet, idles in traffic, and meets pollution standards. I sill prefer my XB12S!! (120 HP would be nice, though.) (Message edited by ducbsa on December 06, 2008) |

Yes, HD could expand their market by adding "modern performance" to the bikes. *But*. The majority of HD owners (again - remember, I sell 'em for a living) want straight line comfort, lots of storage space, factory farkles, lots of shiny chrome, and loud exhaust. Yes, there are exceptions. However - HD has figured out *this* is "their market", and they're doing quite well this way. They have tried adding modern performance - and the VRSC family is still undergoing constant changes, trying to find it's niche. It's not that HD can't make them - they have the ability and the knowledge (and I'm sure somewhere in a warehouse, they have development mules just waiting for their "grand entrance")...it's just that HD customers shun them for traditional models. The best VRSC model - performance-wise - was the VRSCR. Inverted forks, mid controls, taller ground clearance for steeper lean angles, and the first VR with a 5 gallon fuel cell. It's dead now, because nobody shopping for a Harley wanted a bike like that. And, the people shopping for a bike "like that" never thought they could go into a Harley dealership and find one. Hm. Sounds like what Buell's going through trying to get buyers onto their bikes. I think the twincam and Evo XL motors are about at the ends of their developments, at least realistically. There's no way those engines can -reliably- produce the kind of HP that other segments of the market produce, without *major* revisions. Sure, we can do it on customer bikes here and there, but I'm sure the durability cycle of those modified engines would never stand up to factory standards. HD found out that customers don't want "other" engine architecture (at least not en masse), though, with the VRSC family, and that's the rub. *If* HD decided to go after the "performance market" and start matching HP levels with the multivalve, multicylinder bikes out there...they'd have to *have* a multivalve, multicylinder bike. Can't get any more "anti-Harley" than that. Liquid cooling was enough of a sacrilege back in '02, remember? It was just a novelty, not "the way to to it from now on". For most owners/buyers, a Harley just *IS* a big, thumping, pushrod V-twin, and anything else would likely send buyers away in droves. And, I have to agree with Jerry on this one. I love my swiss-army-knife Ulysses, the same way I love my Wrangler. Basic, utilitarian, form following waaay behind function, and it WORKS. But...it's not nearly as sexy as this:
(Sorry, Jerry - just had to torture you!) That S1W is nothing but attitude on wheels (and the CR is very close for me, in person) - big, honkin' engine right out there in the open; plenty of fuel to keep going for a while; nothing on it that doesn't have a job; just barely enough room for a pilot. And the S2? My god, what a body....the S1W is a bar brawl on wheels, and the S2 is the chick you're fighting over. I think HD is (wisely) going to emphasize performance on the XR just enough to make the connection to the original XR's...and that's it. That's all they need to do, and as CityX (and I'm sure our first pre-order as well) proves, the buyer isn't going to leave it stock when they take it home. It's the Harley Way. |

'The S1W; A bold in your face bike, pure power that you can ride through a field if you wanted to.... ' Just go Ride the Bike. I know where one is that does hot shots for the quarter and eighth mile strips through the lights. It will be the centerpiece of the upcoming PNW Clubhouse. |

do tell. :-) Between the lower torque and the strangely low gearing, the XR just doesn't feel like it has the balls of an XB once you get >70 mph. No mistake, it's probably the most flickable Harley ever but that's like telling your date that she "doesn't sweat much for a fat girl". On the other hand, I didn't scrape any hard parts when I pulled into the Starbucks parking lot.
