John - very nice score, I'm glad another one is going to be saved! Looking at the oil leak, it may be your starter gasket. Not too difficult to replace. For the bars, it's been a while since I had stock bars on mine so I don't remember, but IIRC I had plenty of clearance. On my current bars (Buell "race" clipons), it makes a difference where I have my switchgear rotated as to whether it clears or not - rotate them down, I hit my starter or horn buttons, rotate them up and I clear. It does sound like you have a tweak. I still have my stockers, if you want I can send 'em to you, just LMK. I even know where *they* are, lol. From talking to a painter buddy of mine (getting ready to have my original bubble-special tank repainted so I can have a smooth-decal original), it doesn't need sealed inside, just proper clean and prep on the outside, and some sort of NASA-esque flexible primer or something. I've seen a lot that he's done, and they have yet to peel/bubble. My guess is the shock is just dirty (a lot of that poor bike is dirty), it doesn't look wet...but keep an eye on it. I'm thrilled with the Works I put on my S2 - they're pricey, but no more so than the stocker, and the Works (and Penske, for that matter) is user-rebuildable if it ever leaks in the future. That's what sold me on it (I scored a used Penske from our race shop for my S1W). I also lovelovelove the exposed spring look I love the nuke blue frame/wheels, very nice looking bike. Good luck with it, keep us posted, and if you need any measurements or have any "does yours have..." questions, just send a note So Frank...when does the S1W owners list start? LOL. |

John. I have the same problem with my bars. It is just a matter of adjusting the bars and the controls to make them right. I am putting different bars on mine so I never really adjusted them correctly. Plus 1 on what Rat said. It looks like it may be the starter motor gasket, an easy fix. I have never seen a primary gasket leak from the top. Once you clean it all up (I use Simple Green) you will quickly see what is going on. Some things I do to any used Buell I buy is replace neck bearings, isolators, wheel bearings and most gaskets. If the motor is leaking I will do a tear down and replace gaskets as well. Also check your forks for leaks. Rat, I have thought about a S1W list. Seems these bikes really stir the soul, while not being as addictive as the S2 or M2 they really are something special. Lynn and I are heading to the mountains (skiing) for Thanksgiving. Have a great Thanksgiving. |

Joe, like Frank said, I'll try adjusting my bars and switches first and see if I can get some clearance on the RH side. With it mounted I can't see that they are bent. I had my first day with it. I forgot how easy it is to remove the tank and tail, exposing most everything.
Things looked good under there except I noticed the throttle cable must've been out of adjustment and jumped out of the guide at the carb.
I started disassembling my dash and discovered the housing for the indicator lights was broken. Thanks Frank for including the harness with a good housing!
I got the new dash, tach, and wiring installed and working. I also removed the bar end mirrors and installed the regular Buell lollypop mirrors.
It still needs a darned good cleaning and a bunch more TLC, but it's starting to look better.

Looking good, John! If it were me (ask me how I know it's a part that's hard as hell to find when you lose one), I'd pull the nut back off the odometer reset knob and give it a good coat of threadlocker (if you haven't already). Just sayin'... Could I ask a favor, while you have the bodywork off? I have a stock rear fender with light that I'm going to install on my bike (thanks, Frank!) but I have no idea where the plug for the light is on the frame. Could you trace yours from the fender for me, and let me know where(ish) the connector is? My fender didn't have the harness on it, just the fixture and a couple inches for me to solder onto, so I don't even know how long it's supposed to be. And Frank - I forgot the bike was a MD bike when you had that fender - it's already drilled for our stupid-huge tag, means I don't have to go thru the pain of putting holes in great looking CF We just downsized to a "normal" size tag, though; debating an exchange just to keep from having that billboard back there. |

The plug you need is near the bottom of the oil tank on the shifter side. It is a white connector IIRC. The wiring normally is connected from the light on the fender and stretches to the front edge of it and goes underneath by the swingarm pivot. The connection is around there. Good luck |

I had an issue on a few different bikes with the throttle cables popping out like that. I know the recall doesn't apply, but the parts work well for preventing that: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/B056-263602.pdf |

Joe, I had the S1 out for some more tinkering today so I tried to get a couple pictures for you of the wire and plug. As Skntpig said, there is wire and plug connector (mine is black) that runs from the area above the left side swingarm pivot. The connector has a barb that looks like it should be pushed into a hole someplace, but I didn't see one. The wire comes from the large woven wire loom (just right of center in the second picture) that runs vertically along the frame tube near that pivot area. I tried to get a couple pictures for you. Let me know if you need more pictures or some measurements. Also, thanks for the locktite tip on the odometer reset nut. I had installed it finger tight and thought the friction from the rubber washer might be enough to retain it. I added some locktite to it today.
It was really nice out today, so I gave the S1 a quick sponge bath to remove some dust and a bit of the grime. I also removed and stashed the CF stock fender and installed a fiberglass M2 fender I had. It isn't as flashy, but I like the look of the smaller unit. Maybe I'll run across a carbon fiber small hugger to replace it sometime.
I also agree with Joe, I'd like to see a listing started for White Lightnings...even one for the standard S1's. |

Russ, thanks for your efforts with the fender. It'll be a nice addition to the Lightning, and get it a step closer to being street legal. Do do you have snow on the ground? We had a couple inches last weekend, but temps in the mid to upper 40's all week melted everything except in shaded spots. Dave, I bought the bike a few weeks ago slightly damaged. The previous owner had a spill and damaged the dash, tach, flyscreen, and front fender. He removed the flyscreen and tach and threw them away. Some of the guys here on the BWB site have been very helpful with parts and advice. I think if I'm patient, a correct white flyscreen will eventually turn up. |

Dam sorry i have the white fly screen to but i painted it black. I am working on a new fly screen, It may be possible to remove the spray paint from my original one! Of course once i get the new one. I did not sand it i just blacked it out, If you see my other post about having to pressure wash the oil of my bike, Some of the paint blasted off so its definatly not on there to good. I don't know if it will work for your model but it might ask around if it fits its yours, Once i get a new one. |

Russ, thanks for the flyscreen offer, but the X1 screen has the bump on the opposite side. The S1 bump is on the right and the X1 is on the left. If it was an S1 screen, I'd take on the paint stripping in a heartbeat! |

The screen's there somewhere, I just need to get back and start digging I *know* it's there, because I wanted to grab it for my bike as a spare, but never did....even has the S1W logo decal on it. Thanks a ton for the pics of the connector. I'm headed out to the garage today to see if I can locate it, then to the shop to see if I can get the correct "other" connector to plug it in, so I don't have to hack anything (if it isn't already hacked, that is). I've already LED'd the tag light, with an extra I had from putting dome lights in my Jeep (little buggers are BRIGHT - bought a set of 5 for the Jeep, used *2* they're so bright). I'm *so* jealous of your seat.... Bike does look good in the sun, though - that frame came up nicely. VERY nice score, glad someone'll be taking care of it. If you're at all interested, there's a Buell race air filter on ebay now, I'll post a link in a sec... |

What do you guys think of the hypercharger air cleaner? I've never been a fan...thought they were a bit gaudy. I lean toward the carbon fiber race air cleaner or a forcewinder. My knee knocks on the race air cleaner, and I never got used to that. I like the looks of the forcewinder and it leaves more knee room than others. What other air cleaner options are out there? I'd like to see some other cleaners and hear how you like them. |

I've never liked the hypercharger. Every one I've seen rattles, doesn't work properly (vacuum line rots out or disconnects), and IMHO chrome has no place on a Buell. The forcewinder is a nice piece, basic, no moving parts or gimmicks, just a filter and an elbow. Again, though, I prefer the black to the polished. But...both my tubers have the oval CF air cleaners (stock on the S2, Buell Race on the S1W). Good knee clearance, no rattles or noises, clean install, good fit. |

Joe, so your knee doesn't touch the race air cleaner on your S1? I'm about 6'1", and when I pull my legs into the S1 with the race cleaner my right knee rides against the housing. On a Cyclone with the race air cleaner I have plenty of room. |

My knee was always banging against the back of the race air cleaner. Mine is a M2 (S3 tank, X1 front end, and S1 tail), with the Banke footpeg relocator (moves the peg up an inch or so, and back just a bit). I ran a gutted air box for a while after I got rid of the race cleaner, have put a Forcewinder on and enjoy the knee clearance + less bulk. It dries up and needs frequent re-oiling in the summer and washes out fast in the rain. I will probably switch back to the stocker again this winter. -Mike |

'round town, I can tap the race hamcan with my knee (6'4", 34" inseam). Once I tuck in and go to the balls of my feet on the pegs, and my butt further back on the seat, my knee slides right in behind the filter housing. Another option could be finding an S2 filter setup - they're basically the same setup, but mounted on an angle, top-forward, and I rarely if ever hit that with a knee. Might get too close to the tank, though...I'd have to look, but the S2 has a little arc cut out of the tank cover, to clear the filter.

Found my fender-light plug, thanks! FWIW, it looks about the same as the sidestand switch plug (still connected on my bike, and working just fine...somehow). Difference is, sidestand has a white plug; fender light has a black plug. Now, to order the mating half for the fender, and a couple pins to put in it. YAY. One step closer. Now, if I could get the silicone I used to attach the wire inside the fender to "hurry up" and cure, lol. |

John - does your stock rear fender have a metal brace assembly in it? Looking for the connector for the light on parts lookup, it shows a brace that goes behind the tag, with a pair of what look like round metal arms that go to the swingarm and share mounting screws with the fender. I hate to "test" the CF by not having the brace in there, but I'm not sure if I can even get one anymore. |

Joe, my fender doesn't have the braces. From what I've seen in pictures, the braces were for export S1's - must've had larger tags overseas? |
