Well, since around 90% of our mass is made up of water, it stands to reason that our reasoning would be rather fluid as well.

Food for thought.

Additonally, there is little logic in the "my 2003 XB must be a problem because my 1999 X-1 was a problem". That'd pretty much obviate the power of "lessons learned".

Court,
I never said I thought the XB or Blast platforms were bad because my X1 was. I did say however, that Buell has proved NOTHING to me as of yet with the quality of their new platform. For me, it's too early to tell with the XB. (I'd also be willing to bet that the Blast platform is not ridden nearly as hard as the others, and hence has not shown problems. That, however, is my own conjecture.)

It would have spoken volumes to me if Buell had come out with a 3 or 5 year warranty on the new bikes at no additional cost. To me, it would have been Buell "putting their money where their mouth is". Sadly they didn't.

So I'll sit on the sidelines for a while and put off my new bike purchase until I see something I'm willing to spend my money on. The new Buell platform is not that bike until I've seen a serious track record (read a lot of bikes above the "Cecil Threshold" ) with impeccable reliability.

As far as lessons learned, it seems Buell has some work to do in that area, as they still can't seem to design a sidestand correctly. (Doesn't seem like that should be too difficult a task, does it?)

I've thought about that as well, however since many people's problems are with the dealers I'm not sure an extended warranty (tying you to the dealers) would help.

The X1 make the XB or Blast a bad motorcycle? Makes about as much sense as saying the X1 made the RR1000 a bad motorcycle. Which, believe it or not, I actually saw someone try to claim.

I think it was Montague who wrote that 90% of a human's position on anything is based on emotion. Our logical side can get real creative trying to rationalize those emotions.

Aaron, you're correct, it makes no sense to say the XB is bad becuase previous bikes were. But again, I never made such a claim.

However, I would say it's very logical for someone like myself, who was one of the unfortunate few ;) to have problems, to wait and see just how reliable the XB platform is before considering purchase. I made the mistake once assuming Buell had fixed things when I traded my 98S3 for the 99X1. I'm not about to make that mistake again. So, the bar has been raised significantly for Buell to prove to me that the XB platform is reliable.

It seems to me, that most peoples purchase of a motorcycle is based on perception and emotion, not logic. Buell has a lot of work to do, in my opinion, to overcome the perception of their motorcycles.

Good News...Great News!!!

Regardless of what is said about the X1, I picked up a Y2K model at a really great price and with the input from the BWB website I have made a few upgrades and modifications to insure it will continue to provide all the enjoyment it was designed to do.

In essence, I feel it was a great investment and am pleased to say it is one of the best bikes I have ever owned.

I have to brag to somebody! My 2000 m2 was selected by our local motorcycle web page Sound Rider www.soundrider.com to be one of the local bikes to represent our local riding community at the International Motorcycle Show. So I'll be busy polishing the hotrod so it will proudly represent the Buell marque!

Just time for a subject change. What's with all the complaining about the possible inclusion of catalytic converters on motorcycles? Many of the current "glitches" in motorcycle FI systems is due to the manufacturers trying to meet emissions standards without aftertreatment. A catalytic converter fitted to a motor allows for richer mixtures, with the knowledge that the cat will clean up the exhaust the rest of the way. Come on, does anyone really believe the Viper burns clean? Lean spots & hesitation are from fuel injection systems (or carburetion, for that matter) tuned to the hairy edge of misfire. A simple, 2-pound brick of ceramic can solve all that. The complaints that emissions controls will be the death of us all is a little tired; it's been tried when they were mandated for cars 30 freakin' years ago! Really, 'THE MAN' isn't out to ruin your ride. The converter is coming, get used to it. (that might change the subject...)

Court replied with:

I guess, just from a rudimentary understanding of the simple math involved ......

Me again,

The poll stated the following Court.

If you have a XB9R or Blast, are you:

READY to invoke the lemon law

I guess you missed the READY part in the poll. You can search the National Highway Transporation Department's Office of Defects Investigation Consumer Complaints Database all you want but you won't find anything based on the question asked in the poll.

Plus HD usually takes the bike back before it goes to court. Believe it or not 40% or 50% wouldn't even surprize me (at least in Arizona).

Cheers,

Compounding the X1 and S3's debut problems were the lack of skilled Buell techs in the dealerships during '99. Most techs were narrow minded, didn't want to work on something new and were to cheap to purchase a few metric tools to do the job. If it wasn't a classic H-D they didn't care to even load one up with greasy fingerprints like they did with the customers bikes. During those trying times I had the upmost respect for all the contacts I made within BMC. While working in the parts and service capacities, BMC always came through for me. Granted I was a Buell-nut personally but a little tact went a long way. These problems were masked from the customers as much as possible and gave franchise owners fits as the Pegasus trotted into the arena traditionally known as the HOGS domain. Couple those teething problems with the average Buell purchaser being highly educated and of above average income. I wish I got to share the commission on a sale when I'd see a salesman speaking with a prospective Buell customer, calmly walk past them, cover my bald head in a helmet and leave 3,000 street miles of tire smoke on the way for a hamburger. By the time I got back there was a prep for delivery order sitting on the desk. Another street fighter in the works. Thanks again Erik! Three years later and I still get the same crappy nine rears to one front tire wear problem. Would I chance buying another? You bet! Do I want one smoother, water cooled, whatever? No way! I'm truly saddened to see the "tube" Buells step aside for the new generation although I'm truly impressed with the new 'Bolts.

Time to quit ranting. The way I ride I tend to break things and when I do I'll stap the Buell to my back and walk home smiling!

Court!!!!

You should put the 1650 CC designation on the front of the shirt. The whole bragging rights about it is first under 2000cc to push the 200mph barrier and you dont even mention the cc size of the bike.

So Buell and HD put up support money for the AMA ? Five million bucks recall in 1999 , and it was very nearly the end for Buell ? Well what's it cost to go racing these days eh ? Must be cheap me thinks, or otherwise, wouldn't that funding be better off spent in the search of more top end performance for the Fireblolt's ?

Reliability wouldn't be an issue, over here at least, if the Firebolts were seriously FAST. Bragging rights are important issues in the British motorcycling culture. If the damn thing's fast, unreliability issues are regarded as 'that's the price you pay for owning such a phenomenal (read unique) motorcycle'. Maybe this is why the S1's are a success, despite their problems, because like someone said earlier, they broke the mold when they built them, even though it's a shame they didn't make them seriously fast either, but at least the S1's had EVERYTHING else going for them.

I like the XB's a lot, but they don't quite live up to the 'hooligan torque beast' reputation of the S1's, and that's why the Firebolt's MUST have more speed. They need to gain the respect of NON-Buell motorcyclist's, and enthusiasts, otherwise it will be a long time before the (Buell) unreliability rumours die , or the 'lack of power' stories don't kill off potential unit sales, simply because all those NON-Buell riders won't give a stuff about the XB's innovative design status or its GP like handling qualities. Instead those qualities will get buried amongst the rumours, and these will be the rumours of the general motorcycling public who have not necessarily very much, if anything at all, to do with Buell's, other than their pre-concieved perception of course. Dare I say 'not fast enough' and possibly 'unreliable', because I read it somewhere ? But what if the XB's were , for example, Ducati fast ? Perception eh, now that would sell motorcycles, perhaps just as easy as it wouldn't ! Like I said, they need to make Firebolt's FAST !!

The only other alternative is to educate riders towards the bike in its present configuration, but then the bragging rights are lost. You see, TOP SPEED is a massive appeal to a sportsbike owner, even if he never breaks the national speed limit, except when he's sipping on his pint down at the 'local'. But heck, what do I know, Buell 'll sell every Firebolt it builds, and then some ! :)

If you have a XB9R or Blast, are you:

ready to invoke the lemon law 31.82 % (28)
disappointed in its reliability 7.95 % (7)
having the usual share of new-bike complaints 6.82 % (6)
pleasantly surprised at its lack of failings 12.50 % (11)
happy as a clam; no failures to report 40.91 % (36)

I just can't believe that 31.82 percent. It seems highly unlikely, especially when you look at the rest of the poll numbers. It seems out of place. I know, being a visiter to multi-brand sportbike sites, that there's a large amount of ignorant sportbikers that go far to defame Buells name...knowing nothing about them but rumor.

Not for me and many others that had their Buell held captive for 3 to 9 months (at a time). Recalls aren't the problem Patrick, it's HOW LONG it takes to actually implement them. Bet ya if you owned a recalled Ford Focus that it doesn't sit in the repair shop for MONTHS (notice the months) to be fixed. Plus I bet ya it's fixed right the first time.
