I'm planning an S2T build and I'm curious as to other options and ideas out there. So far I'm planning on Ducati 999 wheels (Marchesini 10 spoke) and rotors, "T" equipment, '99-'02 cases, Delphi EFI from a sporty, XB pushrod covers, and other stuff. I know the cases will need modifications I.E. relocation of holes for pushrod bases and weld in a crank positioning sensor (CKP), And the crank will have to be modified or built to have teeth for the CKP to count. All wiring will come from an EFI sporty and controls will be from a non-ABS equipped Ultra. I'll be using the later cases to run an electronic speedo instead of a cable-driven stocker, and the axle adjusters/fork lowers will be adapted to the 999 axles. I have not decided on brakes, suspension, swingarm, or other things. Any ideas? |

Wow. Sounds great! Money's no object, apparently! Can't help you on this one--I've never had a project without a budget! rt |

there is a moderate budget. The thing is that I'm very resourceful when it comes to funding. I can get all of the Delphi electronics and EFI equipment, save the race tuner, on eBay for about $4-500. The wheels And axles I can find for just marginally more than the buell equipment. I saw a set of wheels to yesterday for just over $300. They are aluminum instead of magnesium, so they are a lot easier and cheaper to find. I have a machining friend that can CNC me just about any small pieces I might need at very reasonable prices. I have sourced many companies and made several friends over the last two years, especially when I was building a streetfighter sportster, whom will be a big help in this build. I'm certain that I will make more friends and aquaintance with this build as well. |

Well, count me in as a friend/acquaintence if I can be of any help. I have a modest stash of tuber stuff. rt |

Scrap the race tuner, they are a pain to tune, can't do it live. PC 3 USB much easier to tune and cheaper. Good luck with the efi from the Sporty,I'll be watching with interest. |

PC3? Never heard of it. I'll have to look into it. Right now I'm just trying to get my ducks in a line so that I have a clears picture of my plans once my funds are free to do so. Most everyone I've heard from that has torn down a tuber and built/rebuilt it has told me that having things thought out ahead of time is the biggest advantage. I had a failed streetfighter sportster build in the begining of the year because I lost interest after I found a significant addition to the previous damage: drive gear shattered through the cases. With this build the cases have to be split anyway so I'm hoping for no big surprises as such. Plus it would be awesome if I could finish it (at least mechanically) in time for the June meet. Otherwise I may have to find a bike to use for the run, cuz I'll be there somehow. Most likely I won't be starting on this project though until the first of the year. |

PC3 (actually, PCIII) is Power Commander III/USB. We've had good luck with them at work, but mostly do exhaust/filter swaps and reprogram for that. Anything including major engine work, we usually use the Race Tuner or the new SuperTuner - it's harder to program initially, but you can get much more precise results with it than you can with the PCIII, and there's no piggyback box to worry about. |

Oh, Power Commander. Yeah, forget that. This thing will need a lot more tunability than that. The motor because of the adaptations will be quite a unique charactor. Right now I plan on a mild build, and I say mild because it will be pieced together anyway so some of the stuff will be easy to upgrade. NRHS 1250 w/ large fins (XB type), stage 1 XB heads w/ 15* squish, XB rockers, .040 under pushrods, .536 cams, bronze drive gear, heavily modified flywheels, and maybe a windage tray since the cases will be split anyway. It will have an early style Force pipe fitted with O2 sensors and a Hurricane Flow A/C modified to fit the combination of the Force pipe and T fairing. The majority of the costs obviously will go into the motor because of the EFI adaptation; the rest of the build is just to have a purty showpiece for the workmanship that'll be in the engine. Joe, what is the difference between the Race tuner and Super Tuner? I asked in my FI thread but no one knew the difference. |

I'm not totally familiar with it since I went on 'sabbatical' in July after my wreck, right after they started coming in...but from what I can tell, SuperTuner is the replacement for Race Tuner. More flexibility, programmability, and works with the newest HD EFI systems (08/09) as well as the older ones. Like the RT, it's re-programmable if your hardware changes, and locks to your VIN once used. I need to get back to work, and do more research. That, and our Uly XP looks AWESOME, I wanna play |

VIN locked? Sounds like it could cause me issues. Will I need a vin from an EFI bike or can I use the vin from the frame and still have it function? And Uly XP? What is it? |

Don't knock the Power Commander it is way easier to tune than the Race Tuner, PC can be tuned live on the dyno, Race Tuner cannot be, every change has to be done with bike not running, make change, download to bike, turn key off then on, wait for bike to go off warm up fuel, run it again to see what your changes do. They kept changing the darn thing so you needed updated software and the old cables would not work anymore. Now the Super Tuner is here because of a disagreement with developer and S/E. And Dynojet supposed to be coming out with a PC 5 that has way more capabilities built in. |

The VIN lock means you enter a VIN, or it reads it from the ECM, and stores it so it only works with that VIN. Not exactly sure how that would work in your situation...the ECM may still have the VIN from whatever vehicle you got it from. The Uly XP is the Police Uly. Birch White, "Buell Special Duty" decal, LED response lighting, siren, Outdoorsman cases... http://www.buell.com/en_us/bikes/police/XB12XP/ |

On a different subject, about the cases. Since I'll be modifying a Sporty crank to use anyway, Instead of looking for a set of '00 Buell cases, I may just use the cases in my Dad's backyard. I have the cases and frame of an '03 Sportster 1200S back there just rotting away, and IIRC all I'd have to do is bore out and rethread some of the mounting holes on the cases to make them fit my S2. I was going to sell them with the frame and title but they don't bring as much as they used to so I'll probably just sell the frame and title withoutbthe cases. I think this would he the most cost-effective route for me to go. These cases have the better oiling paths and speedo sensor in the tranny as well. It also has a perfectly fine 5-speed sittin' in there as well. |

I found the calipers I hope to use. I want to use a pair of '07-up Yamaha R1 calipers because they are radial 6-piston and look really cool. I was outbid by $2 on a pair with rotors last night; final bidding was $72. I could've turned around and sold the rotors for that much. If you know any sites that part out liter bikes cheap, let me know. |
