I searched "netbook" (no hits) and "eee pc" (a few hits, but nothing since January) to find out if anyone's asked this before. Is anyone using a netbook like the Eee PC or the Dell Mini to do ECM Spy? I'm thinking it might be perfect to fit into a tankbag and do logging, and to have right there to tweak things. I'm just not sure about the screen resolution and the memory requirements. |

I plan on getting a EEE PC, and then nuking it to put on windows so I can use it for ECMspy. If it uses windows and a USB port, your good to go. The main appeal to me is the solid state drives, I don't have to worry about them vibrating to death like traditional drives. |

I am posting this from an EEE right now. I love the thing but I wouldn't try running windoze unless you install more ram. Solid state drives have a finite number of write/rewrite cycles which is still a huge number but if you allow windows to use the drive for virtual memory, it will kill it off prematurely. The linux distro that comes with the tiny thing is tailored to the EEE so that the RAM you got is the RAM. Sadly, ECMspy is windows-only. Even more sadly, it won't work on my 2008 Uly. |

That's what I'm thinking too - solid state drive, tiny laptop, running XP. Should be perfect! But there's gotta be a catch. There's always a catch... |

Nate, how much RAM do you have? I had a desktop running XP back in 2001 on 512 MB RAM, if I remember correctly. Are there drivers available for putting XP on there? |

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 2E16834220471 Windows XP, 1GB ram, 16GB SSD, 5.4 hour battery, available in black or some weird copper thing. 700 smackers Sean don't you have a macbook air? What about bootcamping that for the times you need to check something with ecmspy? |

mine came with half gig of RAM. XP drivers are available. In fact, not that I thk of it, it came with the drivers on a cd when I bought it. Bear in mind that the little thing has no optical drive so you'll have to figure out how to put the install disk on a flash drive or something. |

Froggy - yes I do have a MacBook Air, but it's got a regular hard drive, and I'd like to get something to log while I ride. The MBA is my computer for school and I don't want to take a chance screwing up the hard drive by having it spinning on a vibrating bike... |

We just picked up an Acer Aspire One from Costco - $350 Windows XP, 3 USB ports, built in wireless, ethernet port, card reader slot (don't know how many different cards it'll read). Will likely try it with ECMSpy - soon as I get my OWN (it's Sunny's) - shouldn't be a problem except possibly redirecting the Comport - and there's software for that. It's a full-featured LITTLE laptop. If you can get into Costco, it's worth checking out. Again - I haven't TRIED it with ECMSpy or the Buell Race Programming software yet - but it'll happen this winter. |

I have to add that I'd be concerned about trying to do logging to a spinning disk - and not doing datalogging to a solid state data system... but that's just me (I kinda do testing for a living) Might work - but ANY vibrations are BAD vibrations for a hard drive. |

I just bought a WiBrain with 32G SSD drive and 1 gig of RAM. It runs full blown XP. Just got it last week and haven't had chance to play with it yet, but I think it should work great. Only problem I have is my tired old eyes reading the screen. Thank God for dollar store magnifying glasses. (Message edited by aeholton on November 24, 2008) |

Gunter, What's different about running it on a netbook rather than a full-size laptop? Thanks. Sean |

I have run ECMSpy on an eee 701 4G (that's the original eee. I installed XP on it), and it ran great. More than enough computer for the basic stuff like resetting your TPS. |
