Does anyone have any advice on what to do about the ride of my 98 S3T? (I purchased the bike new in 1998). I only weigh 140lbs and live in central Illinois where the roads are not the best. Over the years, I've tried multiple settings and I'm currently running a S1 shock modified by Race Tech. I'm also running a newer S3 seat that has more cushion to help compensate, but it only helps a little.

1. What is the purpose of using a S1 shock? Why not get the S3 shock revalved by Race Tech to be more compliant? 2. The forks, if they are stock, probably have about 7/16" of preload spacers on top of the springs. You could reduce the thickness of them to give a softer ride. Or get custom springs made for your weight. 3. Try experimenting with different weight fork oil to alter the damping characteristics if you've ran out of luck with changing damping settings on the stock forks. 4. Race Tech can be your friend if you want to spend big bucks and and modify the forks with Gold Valves, etc. for a more compliant ride. |

Sparky, thanks for the reply. I'll go down your list. 1) I went with the S1 shock for a couple reasons [1] Years ago when the shock was recalled, the dealer said the S1 was sprung lighter [2] My S3 shock was leaking and a friend had an S1 shock with the Race Tech Gold Valve already installed he was selling for a reasonable price. 2 & 3) I'll try the fork spacers and lighter fork oil this winter when I have more time. 4) When my friend had the Gold Valve installed in his S1 shock, it was better, but still not great. Thanks again |

HI, sorry about the ride quality on the Buell. Making sure you have the right spring on the shock for your weight is important. Upgrading to a Penske is the best solution, though costs a lot. Short of that, sounds like your doing best you can. IMHO, the Buell underslung shock design is a bit of a comprimise and I dont think oveall it offers the best ride quality. My brother put on a Penske and its an awesome upgrade...best you can get. Christian |
