I have been wanting to get a GPS for my bike, but I have no idea how to mount it to my xb12r. I am wondering if any of you have been able to come up with a solutions. If it matters the GPS unit I was looking at is the Garmin Zumo 550. |

I mounted Zumo 550 on my XB12Scg with clip ons. I had very little space to work with. I don't know how cramped a XB12R is.

There is a RAM mount that fits into that steering head hole in front of the gas cap, you can use that. The mounting hardware it comes with will let you mount onto the brake lever/master cylinder piece no problem. |

Froggy, I have been looking at the steering stem mount for my camera. Problem is RAM lists it as fitting 12mm+. The stem bolt cap on the XB upper clamp is 3/8. 3/8 = 9.5 MM. You know of a different size?? |

Ouch, sorry I do not. I have seen it on others bikes but have not tried it myself as I got a UlySSes. |

Thanks Lighninginthesky, that is exactly what I would like to do. I just fear the xbr fairing might get in the way. Do you have a rough idea the space the mounts and unit take up? |

Chris, anything mounted on the firebolt bars inside of the grips will contact the fairing at full turn. I bought the RAM mount mirror stud ball mounted my camera directly above it with a 6" arm extended back towards the rider. If I try to turn the bars all the way to full right lock, my camera gets smashed. Luckily for me I realized this at parking lot speed and not out on the road. |

What about just using the suction cup mount? You could stick it on the inside of the windscreen maybe? Good question though. I've been looking at doing the same thing on my 9r. |

Using a suction cup is a bad idea, they have a hard enough time holding a car windshield, and the car windshield is sturdier and doesn't vibrate much. |

You need a 1/2 inch wide space on the bar. I mounted mine laying back at the angle of the instrument cluster. That requires approximately 6 inches from bar to top of GPS. The GPS it self is approximately 4 inches high by 5 inches wide. The mount is fairly versatile and allows some flexibility in mounting position. I find I have used the GPS more in the car then on the bike. The GPS comes with a second mount for the car. It's nice to have on longer rides. |

Pepperk496, that's what I was afraid of. For your information I remember seeing photos on this forum of someone with a camera mounted on a xbr. I did a little searching, but couldn't find it. I believe it was in the cool buell motorcycle pics forum posted like a year ago. It was a blue xb9r if that helps. Sorry I couldn't be much more specific. |

Firebolt32, I would question if the suction would hold up to the vibrations. I was even thinking of doing some sort of mount over the gauge cluster since the GPS has a speedo built in. Haven't really put a lot of thought into just yet. |

Thanks Lighninginthesky, I will have to do some mock dimensioning on my bike. More than likely I would be using it in the car more often then the bike too. I just know that my friends and I are looking to find different places to ride, and it is nice to have a GPS for routes, gas station locations, restaurants, and so on. |

My mount is made by Techmounts. They now make a mount that secures to the top of the fork tube & is a superior setup to mine also. The new mount is not listed on their website but you can call and tell them what you want. It is like the one in this link but the ID is 54MM. They carry all the cradles for the GPS's also. BTW if you add a ST windscreen you actually gain a small bit of clearance between any item you mount on your bars and the windscreen itself. My GPS setup did not have enough clearance without the ST windscreen. The ST windscreen also made a "bigger bubble" to tuck behind & GREATLY reduced wind noise/turbulance. http://www.techmounts.com/products/index.php?page_ function=detail&product_id=92 (Message edited by Speedfreaks101 on November 11, 2008) |

I use velcro liberally on my bike. I would try velcroing (sp) it right on top of the speedometer, with that thing you don't need a speedo anyway, right ? It would also be sort of "hidden" from theives, road debris and weather. |

i want to see someone put it on the inside of the airbox, with a window or something so you can see the screen -- would look pretty cool and keep it from thieves and the elements. i would do it except i don't believe in gps...its telling you lies!!!

Thanks Speedfreaks101, that is very helpful. I will definitely check those mounts out. I will also look into the windscreen. |
