When I "blip" the throttle from idle it chokes and sometimes backfires. I asked the dealer and they told me it was becouse Buells had a valve overlap. He got all techie and lost me. But he said it's normal. Is it? I also asked him about a remap and was told it's not available yet. Is it? Thanks in advance. |

Well there is a remap but it doesn`t do much, my dealer did it on my 09 and it helped a bit but it still does what you describe. Like Werwulf said welcome to the 08 and up club |

...yep normal for us 08 owners. It doesn't get any better after a good warm up either so be careful.... I could be riding for hours and suddenly cough-spit-stall dead in the middle of an intersection.... |

That sucks. You would think it would be fixed before they sold the bikes... |

I find it funny when people "blip" the throttle at idle.... this is a heavy flywheel engine with a LONG stroke.... dont expect it to react like any other engine you have "bliped". Its very easy to suprise the pistons coming up on the stroke and caugh out the intake. After you own this bike a while, you wont do that anymore. |

Do not "blip" the throttle on a fuel injected Buell. |

i get the cough-sputter-stall sometimes just sitting at a light. no blips here. i also get the same effect rolling through an intersection on several occasions. no blipping there. i get the same effect at low rpms as well. |

I have gotten the "pop/cough" out of the intake since day one on my bike. 04XB12R I complained about it to my dealership and they said it was normal. I don't like it and do not feel that a BRAND NEW BIKE at the time should not do that. Shit even after 26K on the clock it shouldn't do that. I guess things will never change. |

the 07 earlier bikes can be cured with ecm spy or the like... the 08s have no real cure... im lucky that my 08 uly doesnt give me problems like my 08 scg did.. its not just a matter of blipping the throttle, its a low speed drivability issue... i never blipped my throttle, just cursed a lot... |

did you people read the first post here..? |

its all tied together, weather you are blipping the throttle or rolling from a stop sign.. the motor just will not take the gas in an acceptable manner... it also has to do with the way customer service side steps the problem... if you say you cant blip the throttle, they will tell you just to dont blip the throttle... if you say the bike might stall when you roll out from a traffic signal, thats something you should be able to do without doing a wheelie to keep from hesitating.. btw, it isnt really a problem... the lady at customer service told me so.... |

did you read the other posts? we're saying that it happens whether you're blipping the throttle or not. |

My '03 does that too, always has. Try to curb the desire to "blip", as fun as it may be. |

would raising the idle up a notch do any good? |

I've just got used to slowly rolling on the throttle and slipping the clutch when taking off. Now if I could just stop that noise from the rear tire. ,R.D. |

I think this is carryover from Harley. Always been a problem with them injected or not. |

'97 S1 Lightning, '00 883C, '02 X1 White Lightning, '03 XB9R, '04 883, '08 883R, and '08 XB12R. The '08 XB12R is the ONLY one that does not suffer from the "choked/backfired/cough-spit-stall/sputter/pop/cou gh blip or no blip" syndrome. Have absolutely no idea why. Go figure. |

i wish my buell would carry over from my 08 roadking... it never misses a beat, hot or cold... runs flawlessly.. if you have a harley with a drivability problem, it can be fixed... i dont understand why you can buy a screaming eagle race tuner for a harley, but not a buell.. i would think the epa rules would be the same... |

Try to curb the desire to "blip", as fun as it may be. I will take that advice. I'm actually more concerned about when I try to take of fast and it does it, more than the "blipping" Honestly I know very little about bikes but am learning with the help of you guys and gals. It just seemed like every other bike can rev the engine at idle but mine. |

My 08 did it from day one and again my dealer told me it's normal and simply don't blip it. I think we're all just looking for it and that's why it's there. If it does it when rolling the throttle there's a bigger problem at hand. |

If I understand what you are saying, your dealer is right. It's not a real techie thing, it's basic carburation. It should gag and pop. If you do it too much, it will backfire. There are reasons why blipping is a bad idea. Understand basic carburation. I know we are talking ECM and injectors here but the principles are the same. Blipping is telling your system to supply fuel for 0mph, then 60mph, then 0mph. All without actually moving. Under load, that energy goes to the wheels or the clutch and you don't notice it. Standing still, it's just going to bog. If the engine is cold, it will foul the plugs and flood, or flood and foul the plugs. If the engine is warm, the fuel will collect and fire early, backfire, putting bad loads on the piston crown, bearings, etc. If the engine is hot, it will pop and sometimes backfire. You probably don't blip the engine while riding, why would you do it when it's standing still? If you feel you have to because you're afraid it will stall, spend some time setting up your idle circuit. Once you twist the throttle, it's no longer on the idle circuit. (The nice thing about old school carburation is it keeps you thinking of four stages of carburation.) If your bike doesn't stall, break the bad habit. |

What is blipping? I can quickly rev my bike from idle and it doesn't pop or stall, but it doesn't rev smooth like a jap bike. |

Blip is when you momentarily give it a quick throttle and release. Try it, I do it intentionally to see how close to stalling I can get |

I've never understood blipping. Never had the urge. Any time I've encountered someone doing it, I always get the instant impression that they're a showboating jerk (whether it's accurate or not). I mean, seriously, do you sit at the traffic light in your car and blip the pedal? My father-in-law claims the older Harleys needed it to keep from loading up and flooding... something about opening up the intake or something. But I don't think it's the same kind of quick blipping people do today. ~SM |
