Court Posted on Friday, October 31, 2008 By the way . . . Teeps if you had to pay for your's drop me a note and I'll reimburse you. Thanks for the offer Court. My bike was long out of warranty when it broke. I figured this was a common part so tried to buy one from the LBS (local Buell store); they told that the part would have to be ordered, and was more than $10. I thought that was too much for a piece of bent piano wire so, I made one. Months later the updated part appeared on bikes on the show room floor; so I bought and installed the update part and called it good. The wire-form on the '06/'07 and early '08 Uly's appear to be the same part. Court do you know why Buell only offers to update '08 Ulys?

Does anyone know if this will apply to earlier model year XB's? Haven't gotten anything yet for my (purchased new this past April) '06 Uly... I did replace my wireform on my own, with a cable loop retainer thingy before I had a chance to BBQ my cable. Just wondering is all - my loop seems to be holding just fine so far. |

It seems from the letter that the kit "may" be offered for earlier bikes at no charge but that only bikes under warranty get the free installation. It is not specific so clarification would be needed to positively determine if the part is at no charge for older out of warranty bikes. It could also be that the upgrade will be done by the dealer with only a charge for the installation for out of warranty bikes but the kit not given out for owner installation. |

It's a shame some folks never owned a BSA. 69 BSA 441 Victor. I understand vibration like no other! |

Beeza Victims vibrated a lot, but the worst bike I ever rode for vibration was a '73 H-D Sprint 350.That Splint made a 100 mile ride on the Interstate a monumental achievement of Epic proportions. |

I don't know and haven't checked but I suspect because there were no problems with them. I **suspect** that the problem was unique, as a result of placement, position of some unique characteristic, to the 2008 model. Mine broke on the 2nd tank of fuel. The program, as the letter clearly states (writing these letters is an art form) is for "2008 XB model motorcycles". No other years or models fall under this program. |

Xbgeorge Posted on Monday, November 03, 2008 - 09:41 am: The new style is better. My old one broke and caused the cable to burn on the header. Court Posted on Monday, November 03, 2008 - 09:49 am: Can someone consolidate the many threads about this? Dogdaze Posted on Monday, November 03, 2008 - 10:01 am: Called Buell Customer Service last week to see if there was any warranty action in the works for my '04 xb12s - "Nope!", was the reply. So went to LBS and bought new style clip ($12) Very nice improvement. Did I get tooled by Buell CS? Court Posted on Monday, November 03, 2008 - 10:13 am: No. The program applies to ONLY 2008 XB models. |

Court do you know why Buell only offers to update '08 Ulys? I got a letter the other day and I have an 06 Uly. They may be sending out different letters or have different programs for the different model years. |

>>>Court do you know why Buell only offers to update '08 Ulys? That is inaccurate, the program applies to ALL 2008 XB's, or so it appears as I read the letter.

Best guess I have. I'd guess if there were a problem they would have covered other years. Simply a guess. |

Probably figured that all 06 and 07's have already been replaced. I still have original and functioning 06 wireform. Mine must be a far right outlier on the 6 sigma bell curve. |

Buell was quick with the fix. Buell was generous with the fix. I certainly didn't expect a goodwill fix, which is very nice. I'm not sure I'd call it a quick fix, as these things have been breaking for 3 years now. I'm hoping you can enlighten me a bit as to what is going on behind the scenes. Do you think the delay between the time we (badweb) recognize a problem, and the time Buell delivers a fix, is related to the inertia of company bureaucracy, or the fact that Buell doesn't know the problem exists? Or do you think that their threshold of identifying a problem is different from the one used here? I know the internet magnifies problems, so everything we see here might not be "real." At the same time, there have only been something like 6k Ulys produced. If even just a few of them have a common failure it would seem (to me at least) to indicate some sort of flaw. Do you know what Buell considers to be an acceptable failure rate? |

Mine is the original also. I do recall a few fellow '06 Uly riders having to replace theirs along with the melted clutch cable. a year or two ago. |

Just had my clutch cable replaced, and got the new funnel holder thingy as a bonus! Or, maybe it comes with every new clutch cable? But, my rubber lined cable clamp worked great! |

Oh, and my original wire form is still intact on my 06 Uly, but you guys are making me nervous!! |

If the original wire-form is not broken, leave the original on and loosely zip-tie the clutch cable to the front engine isolator as a safety. Monitor it's health and replace it if it breaks. The zip-tie will keep the clutch cable off the exhaust if the wire-form breaks, and if it's like mine, you may find that the zip-tie removes some pressure that may be the cause of the wire-form failure. |

Oh, hell; just spend the ten bucks. It takes five minutes to put the new piece on, then you'll never have to worry about it again. |

I got a letter the other day and I have an 06 Uly. I'll have to retract that. I got a letter from Buell the other day, and I assumed it was this notice. I actually read it last night, and it was an invitation to take a survey. |

I did the survey yesterday for my '06 experience. Lot's of probing questions about riding style, including any penchant for curb hopping, wheelies, stoppies, and burn-outs. I think they're looking for Sanchez Oh, yah, my original wireform is fine at 14K although I did wrap the cable with a piece of aluminum to keep the wire from cutting into the sheath. |

I had the clutch cable replaced today on my 2006 XB12Scg ... it was leaking and replaced under warranty. The service rep asked me if I wanted the new and improved retainer installed with the new cable. I asked if it was free and he said no it was $12. They checked the recalls and I did not qualify for the free replacement. I told him to go ahead and install and i would pay for it. Do you think Buell included it for free with the new cable or were they right in charging me for it? |

It’s separate from the clutch cable. The service program is only on 08s. You have a good dealer, they knew about the upgrade. You need to remove the clutch cable to properly install the new retainer, so it would have been killing 2 birds with 1 stone. |
