I've organised with my dealer, Harley City in Melbourne, to leave my 09 1125R (white, thank you very much) in the crate until I'm ready for delivery (I'm moving house in December). That's thanks to Pryateryderzmc (damn that's hard to touch-type) posting about leaving the factory protection on.

Anyhooo, what if I take it to the extreme and have the bike delivered still in the crate -- what am I up for in terms of putting it on the road?

I think I remember reading that they can't do that. The dealer has to to their prep and a test ride before you can take delivery from what I remember.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

My opinion: Leave the prep to the dealer. Negotiate it if you can/want to, but even if they would let you have it in the crate, there is to much potential exposure for me if there is something wrong. The trade-off for saving the $$$ might be blowing your warranty.

Point well taken, Badlions. In this case, because in Melbourne every vehicle has to pass a "roadworthy" inspection when sold (and even resold) before it can be registered, I would simply uncrate it and have one of the local bike delivery people take it back to the dealer for prep and the roadworthy.

all they have to do is connect the battery on the 1125

When I got mine, I tried to get it in the crate.
My salesman worked hard for me, but the best we could do was - I got to pull all the "placenta" plastic wrap off and do most of the de-crating myself.
I pulled the passenger seat and looked at the tool kit.
Then I removed the seat and looked around.
Found the fuse-box and inserted the Mains fuse - turned the key on for the first time since it left the factory.

After that, I left and she got the PDI done and was delivered to my door.

Got a half-hour video of me and the salesman running around Loretta like two kids at Christmas with a new electric train.

Warranty requires that a dealer set up the bike, regardless of how major or minor the "set up" process may be on a particular model.
