sounds good. did you record it yourself? constructive criticism: the vocals need to come down a little bit to sit in the mix a little better, and slightly pan them to the left or the right. it will help them sound like apart of the music instead of sounding like it is on top of the the music. maybe add a little reverb also. but performance wise good job. not the normal kind of music i listen too. but i like it . you have a very unique style and that is a good thing in my opinion. | ||

Thanks Gary . Yes, recorded at home, just me. I've been playing around with a little Boss recorder for a few years, but just finally bought a bigger Tascam unit (2488mkII), these are the first tracks I've done with it. Thanks for the pointers - normally I do the opposite of some of those, I bury the vocals and add too much reverb, so maybe I've gone too far the other way this time. | ||

hey that is a pretty neat recorder. you should be able to do a lot with that. i used to record to fostex hard disk recorders. i have a D-80 and a D-160. but now i run a Focusrite Saffire PRO 26 I/O that i run in to a Macbook pro running Logic Studio. if you ever need any tips let me know. i will do my best to help you. other than that keep up the good work. | ||

You may get the occasional PM then. Thanks! The Tascam rocks, makes life so much easier than the little Boss BR532 I have, and I can work a lot faster too. If I have an idea it's really easy to just create a new song and start recording before I forget the idea. I looked at the Fostex MR16HD too, but decided on the Tascam for some reason which I can't remember now. I also run Reaper on my PC, but I'm finding I can do everything on the Tascam. Learning heaps at the moment, messing about with compression and delays on vocals a lot, and trying to sort out a monitor setup instead of using headphones all the time. This is my little setup in the spare room at home:   I submitted the demos to a Brisbane singer/songwriter series of gigs called FretFest last night... Hopefully they like it and I'll get a solo set somewhere before Christmas. Next stage is to start the search for a drummer and guitarist and turn this into a proper band | ||

not a bad little setup at all. I really like Tascam stuff. i think they make quality products. as far as compression goes i normally compress and gate everything before it goes in to the recorder. for the most part i use 2:1 compression ratio. also with vocals layering is the key to getting a lot of depth to your vocals. when i record my band it is not uncommon for us to have between 12 and 26 vocal tracks. panning is very important also. try not to pan anything right in the center, and also try not to pan anything in the same position. such as if you have 2 guitar tracks don't pan them in the same spot. they will jumble together. try to separate thing in your mix. as far as monitors go. i just picked up a set of KRK Rockit 8's. they are self powered and sound very good. they have a very nice flat response to them. although i just mixed our latest cd using a set of Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO headphones. they sound absolutely amazing. here is a pic of my control room. sorry these pics where taken with my iPhone  this is our live room  oh i almost forgot.... you have to get a lava lamp. no studio is complete with out one...lol | ||

Those tracks have only one, or two at most, vocal tracks, with the vocal very slightly to one side and the guitar very slightly to the other. I think I'll have to stop being so cautious with the settings! The next round of recording will feature bass and drums of some sort, and probably some backing vocals too. Anybody else had a listen? | ||

I agree, drop the vocals a bit. You can add some reverb to the vocals to round them out a bit. Try doubling some of the guitar parts, that can add fullness. Consider double mic-ing the guitar. Use a close cardiod style mic and a condenser mic for a more roomy sound and then mix them. A touch of compression can even a mix out as well. Cuts down the loud parts and brings up the quiet parts for a more even sound. As a final thought - burn your mixes to a CD and play them in everything you have from your living room to your car. That way you hear how things sound in different environments. | ||

Ok, my little home studio is now complete  I've been listening to the tracks in the car, on the stereo at home, on the PC... but probably concentrating too much on the song structure and the performance, rather than the mix. Listening to it again on the way home in the car and trying to just concentrate on the mix, I can see what you mean, especially in the first two tracks, "Catching Up" and "Freakin' Out". I can see myself investing in some more mics... Starting to get some feedback from friends and associates, and a few people like the tunes, which is pretty cool | ||

SCHAWEET you have the same lava lamp that i have...lol i read in a recording magazine that by putting a lava lamp in your studio actually helps creativity. they said when you get stuck on something stop and watch the lamp for a few and relax. i don't know how much the lava lamp helps but what the hell it looks cool...lol don't be afraid to try things. i agree with what Thepod said. multiple mics and multiple tracks of guitar will make your mix sound very rich. you already have the music and performance part down. soon your recordings will be doing them justice. | ||

I will experiment more, it's half the fun! Got feedback from FretFest, it seems they thought my lyrics were "inappropriate" for what they're doing! I'm surprised but not upset, and kind of proud in a way There are other avenues for my tunes, I want to improve what I do, not change it! | ||

Make music for yourself. Not everyone will like what you create. It is "art" afterall and appreciated by some and not by others. On a side not you have inspired me to get back into home recording. I put it away for about 2 years, but I think I got the bug again. It's verysimilar to the Buell bug. Once it's in your system, you can never really get rid of it. | ||

I love reading and listening to this stuff. Music, regardless of what level you do it at or what style you play, is spectacular. I spend at least an hour a night, don't play worth a hoot, but it's the best time of the day . . . "my time" and I so look forward to it.
