I keep my bikes in a heated shop in my basement connected to a tender.
In fact, ANY time my bikes aren't being ridden, they are on the tender. I've never had a battery fail. Ever. I replace it as a general maintenance item, but I've never needed to replace one.
Here in Tennessee, we have funny weather. One day it may be 30 degrees, the next day it may be 70. It was in the 70's this past weekend, but didn't get much above mid-50's yesterday. Even in January, we are likely to have a 65 degree day on occasions, so my bike is always ready to ride at the drop of a hat.
I do tend to run anything that has a carb dry so the float bowl doesn't get gummed up and sticky. I drain the gas out of my generator and lawn mower at the end of the season and run them till they quit. Then I will change the oil.
Other than that....I do nothing different. Never know when I will get to go ride. I've ridden in 18 degree temps before. Yes...I froze my keester off...but I got to ride!  |

Another tip is to put the bike on stands, prevents possible flat spotting of the tires. If stands unavailable, putting cardboard under the tires will also help. |

I HIGHLY recommend NOT draining the coolant. The coolant prevents corrosion.
Get a battery tender. This will prevent strain on your starter when you try to start it on a low battery. |

i was buying oil at the dealer and i got asked why i needed more oil already, so i told them i was changing the oil for winter storage.
I was promtly repremanded for my mistake, and was told the propare way it to leave the oil in it over the winter and drain it before i ride it for the first time.
The reason is condesation is goin to get in the new oil over the winter.
I tried saying to them in the summer u get water in ur oil anyways but driving it at normal temp gets rid of the water. so the same would happen with the new oil in the beginning of the riding season.
can someone give me some answers. with reason's. comparisons between before winter and after winter oil change.... |
