I took a 'wee' trip this past week (a little over 1700 miles) and my fan that had been rattling for several thousand miles finally died about 80 miles from home. Thankfully it was one of those mornings I had to scrape the frost from the seat so no worries on overheating. I've had a spare sitting in a box for months and was beginning to wonder if I ever needed it.... this is some veird validation for my paranoia!

Aside from pulling the rear shock.... any suggestions (or don'ts) when replacing the fan?

People have posted that you have to hold your tongue just right to get the fan to come out without hacksawing the fan or frame.

Well, you could rotate the engine down and remove both cylinder heads (like I just did)...the fan's real easy to get to then...

Dr_greg, how is your repair progressing? Man, I would have been really tempted to use some of that Loctite thread repair goop.

yeah remove the shock and remember that patience is a virtue. By the way the fan on my '06 for the last year was making a mornful sound that sounded like a mechanical failure. The old one when pulled out ran fine when bench tested and sounded like the new fan that I had purchased. The dealership diagnosed the problem as the ecm unit. It is still at the shop. Maybe my milage will improve from low 40's with the new ecm. .

A "wee" trip? Ah....where the heck did you go? Did you hit the beaches in Fla. on the Uly?

Glad to know you are enjoying your Uly. How many miles does that thing have on it now?

My fan was replaced under warranty. I only had to put the ECM mtg bolts back in and tighten the battery bolts before I left the parking lot, so I can't help much there.

thanks for the helpful tips yall...when I stopped to finally pull on the heated gloves (I know...wimp) the fan kinda sounded funny .... like trying to rev up but I thought it was just ME. Anyway she blew a fuse later and tripped the idiot light. Stuck a new fuse in when I finally figured it out (brain firing more erratically than cold Uly) and it held for a short while before blowing again. At which point I pretty much said...time to get home.

Ya Vern I was much tempted to pay you an un-announced ride-by but time kinda got kanked a little.... I was down to Asheville, Spartanburg, Brevard...some of that BRP and some other weird scenic highway stuff through the Smoky Mountain NP ....btw I gotta lead for anyone needing buy their favorite Minnetonka moccasins! On to Nashville and some roundabout roads before heading home. She has 24 something miles now. Had to get a new tire put on at Bumpus HD (cool name eh?) as I did troll a good bit on the Interstates as well .... seems like when you get past ETenn into Middle Tenn things kinda flattened out but staying off the highway during daylight hours and chasing down those brown signs can be fun.

BTW Vern, ever get to the bottom of the clock resetting stuff? I tried like heck to reproduce but no luck. That 06 seat is the berries man...but with temps getting cold I'm feeling the need for a BAW!

Hey I know when an earlier thread started cos someone was worried about riding 200miles...and I was a little smart alecky in my reply....but still though...what a cool bike...'bout time for another oil change.

The clock thing seemed to be a need for re-torquing the new battery terminals after they seated in over a few hundred miles of vibrating lump.

That is some beautiful riding in those areas. I still feel grateful to live here. You would have been very welcome to stop in ya know.

Funny you should mention the BAW tonite. I have just trimmed it a bit more and will be installing it soon. There has been frost on the pumpkin, that is the sign!

The BAW is indeed the right tool for the cold days ahead. Glad to hear you got the resetting clock figured out!

Ya know following the leaf peepers wasn't all that bad...gave me a chance to peep too...it really is pretty around these parts. Funny thing though, following some pickup truck poking along...with a bike in the bed...well tried my patience a little. I'm thinking I be cranky ol fart any moment now....a paranoid one at that.

Finally got to the fan last night.... everything went swimmingly until it was time to actually pull the fan out...some secret handshake that was! Thanks for the tips!

Say, think anyone at Buell would want a worn-out fan? The old fan wore the bearings and there was enough play for the blades to touch the shroud. Noticed the new fan has balancing weights on one of the blades...

I would guess that Buell still has a stack of dead fans from '06's lying about. Try to sell it on E-Bay! I remember a time where you couldn't give a catalytic converter away to the scrappers, now they are stealing them! Fans could become the same way, you never know.

had the same dealer experience with the ECM.
fan bearing is gummed up causing the fan to work harder= higher amp load. they insisted the ECM was "sending too much amps to the fan"

i just sprayed some electronic controls cleaner/lubricant in there to free it up.

5k miles down without further incident.
