I was pretty sure it was only closed since the 100 year rains we had in 2005 that also took out a bunch of roads up where I live in Crestline. I know I road through there in the mid 90's on my GTS1000. In fact they are finally fixing the 173 on the back side of silverwood to Lake Arrowhead that has also been closed since 2005. |

Hwy 2 normally has winter closures for several months when the road is otherwise serviceable. But it was open for the All Calif BRAG Touring Adventure ride in May 2002. Just ask Steve B. & Viros. They braved snow falling on the Crest that rainy morning where the rest of us went around the Big Pines - AV - Mt Emma detour. All good fun! The road I wish they would open is Hwy 39 from Azusa to the Crest. But I understand those plans are indefinetly shelved. |

Wow look at the twists on that 39. Just checked it out on my mapping software. Is any part of it passable in an off-road dual sport bike? Or totally gone in parts? |

I missed that ride so took the road to Mt Baldy on the Harley with the missus. Though I came up mountain ave and when I came back down did not keep going straight. I went left instead so i missed the glendora ridge. I want to make that trip on the Buell though. |

Erik, You might also try Dana at Bates Leather in Long Beach (Signal Hill.) (562) 426-8668. They were good enough for Ago and King Kenny. For those of you worried about my demise, well I did cross over to the dark side for three months. Since the mortgage business was so slow I worked at Long Beach Motorsports for three months. It was "interesting". Ask me in person some time. I'm glad to say my mortgage business is picking up since we now have three FHA Direct Endorsement Underwriters (I couldn't resist a little mortgage techno-speak to tweek the noses of all you engubneers that use big words like Lithium.) Sorry I missed a couple rides. Shelly and I were at Mom's 80th in Maryland in June. I had Bennett Performance rebuild the top half of the M2 when we got back. Subsequently I had to remove and re-install the exhaust system. Twice. 'Cause I like to assemble stuff backward the first time. Apparently in Wisconsin you don't install an exhaust system from front to back. As I understand it now: 1. Get some friends. If you don't have friends get beer and friends will show up. 2. Light candles and form a ring around your work area in the garage. Make sure the cat and the open gas can are at opposite ends of the garage. 3. Join the header and muffler together but do not tighten the muffler clamp. 4. Fasten the front muffler mount to the Y-bracket. But do not tighten it. 5. Fasten the rear muffler to the Z-bracket. But DO NOT tighten it. 6. Gently bring the 5933 exhaust flange up to the 17113 exhaust stud and (NOTE to the boys at Bennett Performance) make certain the 5932 exhaust retaining ring is INSIDE the recess on the 5933 flange!!! 7. Start the nuts on the exhaust studs, but do not tighten them. 8. Now you may tighten the clamp holding the muffler to the header. 9. Now is where the friends come in. Give everyone a torque wrench and a half inch open end wrench. In unison, using either a metronome, gregorian chants, or the Coxswain from the Old Eli crew, tighten all the mounting hardware until one or more of the exhaust studs breaks. 10. Removal for ECMing is the reverse of installation. Seriously I got it together now. I need to spoon on some fresh rubber soon. ...unless Al has some gaffers tape? Lookin' forward to the next ride/meet. |

We've been missing you, Andrew. You need to come to the next SCAB meeting. You going to Vegas? Got plenty o' gaffers tape, but I don't think it'll pass tech inspection that way. Buff up those leathers.... Al (Message edited by al_lighton on September 17, 2008) |

Not to Vegas, but I am signed up for Big Willow and Infineon. I can't believe what an idiot I am for missing Vegas. Now I get to spend my birthday weekend at a wedding in Long Beach instead of in Vegas, eating your food, ripping around LVMS on Buell's 1125R and hanging out with all my rowdy friends. DOH!!! I ordered rubber. I'll mount it at Jack's in the next few days and be ready for the next get together. |

Mmm, mmm, mmm A giant tub of chili con queso sitting right on my work bench so I can lap in valves with one hand and and enjoy rich cheesy goodness with the other. "Shelly, open me up another can of Rotell chili." |

I'll be at Willow Springs Mon 10/27 and for the Inside Pass day Mon 11/3. See you there. Anybody else going? PS If you havent been to Inside Pass, its a very good deal. Food, freebies, tech and track help and you get to test ride a new Buell on the racetrack. When was the last time a dealer let you do that! If you look at the pictures from some of the previous IP track days, these guys arent babying the 1125R's around the track, they're getting knee down. |

"these guys arent babying the 1125R's around the track, they're getting knee down." Absolutely. There are control riders that escort the demo bike groups around the track. But the control riders asses the skill of the group they have in tow and pull them around at a pace that is generally set by the skill of the slowest person in the pack. They won't get too far in front of the group they're leading, but they'll go faster and faster until someone starts dropping back, and then they'll slow up a bit. In the advanced at Vegas, there were only two of us taking the demo bikes out (Ebear and I), because the few other folks in advanced were practicing on their race bikes. Each of us had our own control rider, so it was kinda like having a private instructional track day all day long. Sometimes the control rider would lead us showing us lines, other times, they'd have us pass them and then critique our technique and line choice when we got off the track. We had choice of any bike in the demo fleet each session. WOOHOO!!!! Willow will be a bit more crowded, it likely won't be quite like that. But it's still one helluva deal. Al |

For something completely different, the umpteenth annual Griffith Park Sidecar Rally is this Sunday 10/19 from 10 am to around 1 pm. Spectators free, 2-wheelers absolutely welcome. If ever there is a place to find out if a sidecar can be put on a Buell (or most any other type of bike), this is it. They have it all here, surprise celebrities (I've seen Leno -- although this would probably be a side trip on his usual Sunday Rock Store ride -- & Perry King), trikes, antiques (riders and their rides too ), food, raffles. |

I am now (thanks to Ebear)in the market for titanium sliders. The last shop where I asked about them knew me. They suggested Ti sliders for my back and helmet. I think they insinuated there is a better chance of my back and head touching the asphalt than my knee. Hmph! Anyway, I am truckpooling up to Willow with Brian for Inside Pass. We are leaving after dinner Sunday. Who is staying where? And two weeks after that is Infineon. Please tell me the game plan for that trip also. Brian isn't going, anybody else wanna ride up with me Sunday?

Me before I wore out my front tire.
I got my right knee down once and it surprised the hell out me doing it. Just have to practice getting my butt out of the saddle better. I'll be in Palmdale Sunday night before the track day as I love to eat and drink-ahem at Famous Dave's in the Antelope Valley Mall. I have not heard any suggestions for Sears Point yet, so I am just playing that one by ear so far. Of course for me it is a lot closed than all you real southern Californians. |

OK...Don't take aim at the Photo Guy!... (and PLEEESE hook up rear tire!!..)

Wow, the sidecar rally made history Sunday! For the first time in 37 consecutive years of Doug Bingham putting on the Griffith Park Sidecar Rally, the Park Rangers shut it down early because apparently it got too popular! The crowd seemed to be about 3 times larger than ever before. Although the number of sidecars in attendance seemed about like what I've seen in the past only maybe a little more, the amount of spectator bikes overflowed legal parking spaces to the point that other parties who had paid for their picnic areas complained. So, maybe there's an all-time high interest in sidecars these days or the state of the economy has something to do with it but, I don't know, how can anyone resist the sight of a smiling dog with goggles and a kid in the sidecar?
More pics to follow in Pics section... |
