I'd like to get a Garmin Zumo 550 or TomTom Rider 2 GPS, but I cannot see a good way to mount either one using the standard included mounting accessory. Is anybody here using one of these GPS models? How have you mounted it? | ||

Chameleon, I mounted mine (ZUMO 450) on the clutch side using the included hardware, but many have indicated that they like the brake side better. I started with my Zumo on the brake side but switched to the clutch side and I like it better. The Zumo controls are designed for left hand operation. Time2Run Neil S. | ||

BTW, I went with the 450 instead of the 550, because I did not need the extra functionality of the 550 (MP3 and voice recognition) and it was considerably cheaper. I just googled the ZUMO 450 and found it for as low as $328 w/free shipping. Mike | ||

With the Buell clip-ons, you can mount the GPS low and in the center. Here's what you do: You'll need a Ram-Mount ball that has the 1/4"-20 threaded hole in the bottom of it, a 1/4"-20 threaded rod, a nut to match it, a fender washer, lock washer, and rubber-backed washer. Thread the ram ball onto the end of the rod and put the rubber-backed washer on with the rubber side facing away from the ram ball. Then slide the rod down through the steering stem (it's hollow), and have it cut to length so it extents out the bottom a little. Put on the fender washer so it tightens up against the steering stem, then install the lock washer and the nut, and dap a little locktite where applicable. You'll end up with a ram-ball sitting right on top of the steering stem nut in the center of you top triple tree. I did this on my firebolt, but I don't have any pictures of it. The GPS ends up sitting visually right below the guage cluster. (Message edited by xl1200r on October 13, 2008) | ||

I have the 550. I attached it using the included hardware to the clutch side. Took me 15 mins to do. | ||

FWIW, I try and mount any of my accy's as close to my line of sight as possible, without it getting in the way of critical instruments. This way you don't have to move your head to see your GPS or whatever. For the price difference b/t the 450 and 550 you get the car mount and MP3 and voice capability. With the proper cord and headset you can listen to MP3 and hear the road announcements. This reduces the time you have to look at the GPS and, you can add you favorite tunes, for your listening pleasure. Later | ||

This is my cockpit before I moved the GPS to the clutch side:  I moved it so I would not reach across my line of sight to use the control buttons. I am thinking about a short extension from the clutch bar clamp forward to allow the GPS to be located a little further forward to clear the tankbag.  I like the GPS with the screen more towards vertical so I don't get glare from the sky. I also have a short RAM arm that is split in the middle so the two ends can be "clocked" differently. What type of RAM mounts are you folks using? I have yet to mount my GPS anywhere but the car, and have not had one on my previous bikes. I am wondering what RAM works best. It seems as though I only have about 1/4" of unused handlebar on each side, so I'm not sure what you guys are even attaching to...I kinda like the concept XL1200r illustrates above, but am thinking it may end up too low for my liking. | ||

Mike has his mounted with this h-ware (included in Zumo box: Short arm, 1" ball with clutch/ brake clamp replacement):  Mine is basically the same but with the "split arm" as shown above. Looking at Mike's picts closer, I may try moving the arm to the rear and higher to "see" what it's like before I "re-invent the wheel". Later Neil S. | ||

Ponti - it's the mount that comes with the Zumo. It's a bracket that bolts onto the handleabr clamp for either the right lever/brake resivior assembly, or the left lever/clutch resivior assembly. Nothing goes around the bar that doesn't already from the factory. | ||

Actually the RAM ball mount replaces/ piggybacks the clamp side of the clutch M/C assembly that holds it too the bar.  This picture should better explain what I'm trying to say. No extra bar space is required. Neil S. | ||

I found a mount that replaces or can be mounted on the clutch reservoir cover. this moved it forward just enough and still clears the fairing | ||

I also switched to the arm that splits in the middle that Neil (Ccryder) mentioned. It makes it 100% easier to position the GPS exactly where I want it. Mike | ||

I think it might have been GPS City..but not sure now. I found the mount on the RAM website and did a part # search and found it that way. I'll take a look later when I have some time bob | ||
