I know this has been brought up before many times.

I have narrowed down tires to Michelin pilot powers 2s, Bridgestone bt-016s, Pirelli diablos, Dunlop road smarts.

I will be driving about 70% pretty much straight and 30% twisties, and maybe one track day. I would like a longer lasting tire setup with good feel over the Corsa 3s. I know the Corsa 3s stick like glue but burn out way too fast.

What is the positives and negatives of each tire setup that anyone has noticed? Is there speed changes that goes with changing brands? I am very new to the tire buying market for sportbikes. Thanks to any insight anyone can give.

I went with the 2CT's front and back. Good grip, never got sloppy in the turns but the front seems to cup real bad after 1500 miles. Ended up with a vibration at higher speeds.

I would not expect the BT-016s to last any longer than the COrsa IIIs. they are a simlar multi compound street/track tire. I love em so far with about 750 miles on the clock.

What kind of mileage expectation are you shooting for? Sometimes you can't get there from here. A philosophy that has served me well over the years is:

"When all else fails, lower your expectations"

I'm running the Diablo here. I get 2200-2300 out of a rear, and could get much, much longer out of a front, but they cup because I run them at lower pressure. I get the front free with each rear, or I wouldn't run the Diablo front at all -- I'd run a Corsa III front with a regular Diablo or Diablo Rosso rear.

Mostly sport riding.

For commute work with moderate weekend sport riding, try the Diablo Strata. You should get around 4-6k from a rear if you are riding modestly.

Keep in mind it's how you ride that makes all the difference in the world. There are posters here getting 6,000 out of a Corsa III rear. That's a 1500-mile tire for me.

I went with the Pirelli Diablo Rosso as replacement for the original Corsa III. So far, so good! Haven't noticed any less grip, and it seems to be holding up a little better in the longevity department.

I don't understand how you can only get 1500 miles.
I do ride mine till the steel shows, but this is at 6800 miles.
I replaced the first one at 6100, there's 12909 on the Odo now.

Virgins? What's good about virgins? I've dedicated my life to eradicating that scourge.

Now they've even infected your tyres? You're on your own there, matey.

> I don't understand how you can only get 1500 miles.

Your picture is exactly what my tires (Diablo) look like at 2200 miles.

I'm sure there are any number of differences in our riding styles. For one, I tend to ride every weekend long rides -- 500 - 600 miles at a time. The tires get hot and stay hot. The riding is very quick paced, and it's on very twisty roads. If you are commuting on your tires, they will last much, much longer than if run like I run mine.

When you see a "corner sign" and a speed such as 30 MPH posted under it, how fast are you *entering* the corner? (Be honest.)

While I think it's both amazing and great you get such milage out of these tires, you do realize you are an absolute outlier on the bell curve of tire life distribution, right? I've been asking around the sportbike club, and average life of tires like the Corsa III and Pilot Power from the fast guys is in the neighborhood of 1300 miles.

I think one of the big things is I ride my tires hard - as in pressure... 42 psi as recommended max on the tire.

Riding style - commuting - 30%, short rides(50-200 miles) 20% and long trips(2 @ 3k+) 50%.
Loretta's a daily rider.

That 30 mph curve? no sand, I'd hit it 40 to 50 mph, then honk it at the end of the curve... unless there's a LEO nearby.
I accelerate when on the sidewalls, not straight up, mostly.
I try to NOT spin the tire, I say TRY.
I'm not real good at wheelies, so I don't try them often either.

I posted the picture, b/c I'm tired of hearing I "nurse" my tires.
I don't abuse them b/c they are damn expensive, but I try to enjoy every second on this bike.

Higher air pressure will help keep the running temprature of the tire cooler. This most certainly increases the life of them, at the expense of traction and ride quality.

> Loretta's a daily rider.

My experience is bikes that are used for commuting get a lot more life out of their tires. Lower speeds, relatively little cornering, etc., doesn't stress and heat the tire as much meaning longer life than tires used at the track or exclusively on aggressive rides.

This is another way you are getting higher life. Every State is different, and I've ridden up in CO (I think that's where you are), and I agree with you the roads up there merit more caution. Down here in Texas, I'd enter a marked 30 at around 60, and in Arkansas on a really trustworthy road like Push or 123, I'd probably go into a marked 30 around 75 and come out nearly 90. I'm also one of the slowest riders in my sportbike club, so don't think I'm trying to brag here -- but certainly does explain why my buddies can only get 1300 miles out of a Pilot Power!

That kind of cornering load wears out a tire a whole heck of a lot faster, and that's basically the only kind of riding I'm doing. So, for me, a two-and-a-half-day trip up to Arkansas and then maybe a long full-day ride to Oklahoma (I live in Dallas) is about all I can get out of a set of tires.

> I accelerate when on the sidewalls, not
> straight up, mostly.

Just be careful, of course. Adding throttle once leaned over is the right thing to do, but roll it on careful since you run your tires at such high pressure!

> I try to NOT spin the tire, I say TRY.

You and me both. You are at a greater risk since you run higher pressure. For me, I rarely have the 1125r above half-throttle. She's got a ton of power and certainly more than I can use safely.

When I rode up in CO, though, I found myself using full throttle *a lot*. I couldn't believe how much power the bike was down when at altitude. So, I take back everything I ever said about people in CO being crazy adding performance mods, because a couple of times I was actually wanting for a titch more power up there even as here in Texas the 1125r can absolutely scare me.

> I'm not real good at wheelies, so I don't
> try them often either.

You and me both, bro! All I get when I try is a spun rear tire or a rough re-entry! Oh, and scared I'm gonna crash. Wheelies are NOT for me.

> I posted the picture, b/c I'm tired of
> hearing I "nurse" my tires.

You *are* on the outside of the bell curve, though. 6k out of a Corsa III is amazing. It's partly a testiment to your VERY SMOOTH riding. So, keep that up! Smooth = fast.

In a way, I'm very jealous. I went through 6 sets of tires THIS SUMMER and just bought 6 more sets to make until spring. It's expensive, as you note... by buying in bulk, I'm getting Diablo pairs for $200 (F/R). It's the only thing keeping me riding.

I'm at 25k now. I'd be over 30 if not for a few service problems I've had with the bike and this weekend a BROKEN BELT that stranded me in the middle of Arkansas for 4+ hours waiting for a rescue : (

My tire seems to wear much like your's Zac4mac. Not sure if I can get 6000 (hope I do) but 5000 should be doable based on current wear.

I have run Pilot Roads in the past with very good wear and will probably get a set of PR 2's after the Corsa 3's are toast. They get me in the 7K range and I like the feel of the tire.

I do about 60% straight/ 40% twisty roads commuting and weekend riding. Wish I could reverse it but you got to get there some how.

Mine are also being worn like Zac's. I'm at 4,400 right now and have at least another 1,000 miles on the rear. Granted, I did a 1,500 mile road trip this summer, and I do a lot of commuting (don't know where to go for fun roads to burn off the edges)

Don't forget weight differences. Do either of you carry bags or load the bike in any way, and have you compared each other's weight? Heavier bikes will eat up a tire faster, and heavier bikes ridden hard will eat up tires exponentially.

I have the PR2 and have been real happy overall and that is how I ride. This set has 6,000 miles and plenty of tread left. Great in the dry straight or twisting and great in the wet.

Yeah, Yeah they are not the Corsa III's but they are more tire than I can use.

Here's what mine looked like after 3200 miles and 1 track day. Run recommended pressures all the time and most of my mileage is short commuting (8 miles each way) and trips to friends and family (about 26 mies each way). I save my hard turning for the track, so I'm entering a 30 marked corner around 30, and coming out somewhere around 10 over the limit normally. Very easy on the tires.

Sorry about the huge pic.

If you commute a lot you'll greatly benefit from a sport-touring tire.

My OEM tires lasted 5500 miles.
I've got about 7700 miles on my Metzler Z6 tires and they still look great and have PLENTY of tread left.

There shouldn't be assuming the circumference of the tires are the same--which they should be.

Maybe I'm weird? I get a good deal more life out of tires when I run them with low pressure. Like 28F/30R (cold) on my Firebolt.

I run Metzeler M3's. I think it puts more rubber on the road, so the wear goes into a larger percentage of the tire. I also find that this reduces the feel that you get from a tire that has a flat spot all the way around it from too many highway miles. I also found that my front wears more evenly with these pressures. I no longer get cupping or that particularly worn area about 45 degrees off the center of the front. It makes it a tad more difficult to get to the edge of the front tire but that's ok by me...
