While back cracked top end for gasket replacement, everything look pretty good, but just because it was open, replaced piston and jug, replaced stator, chain guide and shoe...
Everything was running perfectly.

While on a 300 mile run this weekend it started to sound louder and louder - like a diesel engine. Could not figure out if it was engine knock or that chain slapping around in there...then I knew something was dramatically wrong and pulled off the road. Zig Zag all the way around Florida and it left me stranded 30 miles from home.

It had no loss of power, I was able to run at 75 MPH for hundreds of miles, not burning oil, no loss compression that I could tell.

I am not an expert on trying to figure this out, just a girl who wants to ride and does not want to give up the bike. I guess the miles I have on it is predicting I just go get another bike.

Biketoberfest is 3 days away - sucks for me. I did not see myself riding the back of a bike for this event, but what can I do??

You guys know I am like an x-wife or daughter that only comes around when she needs something...sorry - but I really do need your ideas on what I may start looking for...

Check your timing first. Did you get into it and neglect to tighten down the screws? I've done that before. If not that, maybe your lifters, or oil flow issues.

Thanks for your quick reply.
I didn't try adjusting the timing since everything was running so well. I pulled the cover off this morning before work and the module is tight and I don't detect any slop in there.
I guess I should check oil pressure next?

With no loss of power, it could just be the primary chain loose (bad shoe?).
Could also be a piston pin or rod knock.
No loss of power, you just stopped the bike because of the horrendous noise?
Bad timing, enough to knock that bad, would have a loss of power.

Without further info, it could be a lot of things. Anything making that much noise would likely exhibit some power loss, with the exception of the transmission (which would likely cause other problems).
