My '03 xb9s Lightning has been doing this lately. When I start it up I guess its doing a surge through the system or something to where the clock will reset to 1:00 every time I start the bike. It started only doing it like once every five times I started the bike but now its doing it about every time. Also when I drive at night I notice that here and there the lights seem to go really dim for a moment then they go regular. I was almost thinking is it maybe the battery is old due to it is probably five years old since its an '03 and it may be time for a new battery. Anyone have any ideas on what to do about this if it isn't the battery or any idea what I should do to see if it is the battery? If not the battery any ideas what it may be? It seems kinda strange to me that this is doing this so I thought maybe someone has ran across this before. Thank ya in advance if you have any comments. | ||

I was almost thinking is it maybe the battery is old due to it is probably five years old since its an '03 and it may be time for a new battery. It is indeed time for a new battery. Get it load tested to be sure, but it's old enough to be causing problems. | ||

The battery has indeed seen a long life and may still be good but for the peace of mind I would replace it. But when you do please go over the ground points and main positive connections. Do not just tighten them, but remove them, clean them, then retighten them. I have seen alot of really wierd stuff happen because of bad ground points. Even if it looks clean still give it a few scuffs with some emery cloth. | ||

Look at the routing of your ECM bundle where it goes near the battery terminal under the seat. Make sure it is not rubbing, it can make "micro nicks" on the wire that will do exactly what you describe. Look at the battery terminals as well, clean and tighten them. | ||

Lightningstrikes seems to be having that same driving at night problem that I am to where the lights are dimming for a moment then they go back to normal. I'm wondering if he is having the same other issues that I am having. I left a message on his link so hopefully he will get back to me on that. Thanks to whoever had responded on here for any info that they tried to help me with I appreciate it. Ya'll are awesome. ^^ | ||

I'm really not sure how old the battery is. I bought the bike used two tears ago and I have not changed it yet, it's most likely time for a new battery, but riding season is almost over and I will probably wait until spring and buy a new battery. | ||

I've been having a similar problem lately. But my battery is only a year old. I recently added a voltage meter and have been noticing some weird conditions with that. When I first hooked it up, it read a steady 13V. Recently it's been overcharging (15+) and occasionally dips down to less than 10V. Doesn't matter what load I have on it, hi beam, heated grips, accessory plugs, blinkers... While riding, the bike will occasionally turn off, the needles will go dead then go through their startup sequence and the bike will continue to run. Happens almost immediately and sometimes the engine doesnt even stutter. The other night, I was coming home after dark and the lights would dim then brighten again. I've been all over the bike looking for bad grounds, broken connections, pinched wiring and found nothing. Seems like the voltage regulator is the most likely culprit. But I'm open to other suggestions...  | ||

Forgot about this thread. I replaced my battery before I rode the first time this year and haven't noticed the problem anymore. | ||

Check your infamous "77" connector... the one between the VR and the Stator. Sounds like it could be a loose / burned up connector. |
